Ok, cure me please: SPIDERS!
First topic message reminder :
Don't know of it's the curse of this place and that bloody thread About spiders, but over the last few days I've had massive spiders in my house.
They freak me out!!!!
Why are they coming in?
Why are they so freaking big?
What am I so scared of?
HOW CAN I STOP BEING SO FREAKED OUT????
There's no point telling me I'm bigger than them blah blah, there's no point (sassy) telling me they catch flies blah blah or even that they spin little cute webs and make orphans blankets.
I don't care.
I hate them and they freak me out.
Any one got any good cures for me? Please??

And also where would I buy plain alcohol from vic?
Rubbing alcohol/surgical spirit from a chemist would do it Eds.

Get a pet Tarantula it will eat all the little ones. We could all help with suggested names again.
My first suggestion is Tarentino

Killing spiders will not cure you - in fact it will make you worse. Encouraging your child to kill them will make her the same. If you treat them like living creatures which have a right to be on this earth, that will be a start. I cured myself after a spider ran all over me on a train, and two of them appeared in the car when I was driving. When you realise that you can't avoid them and that you might actually crash your car, you tend to want to stop being so silly about it.

Once you can get to the stage of being able to put a spider out of the house without killing it, it's best to keep the materials handy. A plastic transparent cup and a piece of cardboard in each room is a good start. If you can't face getting so close, you can get spider removers with a long handle. I haven't tried one myself but they sound like a good idea.
Always put the spider some distance away from the house or it will come back in again.

SPLURK !!!
G'DAY, Ragga' ~ what wimp gave you that advice ?
Keep a plastic cup and a card handy in each room !
Buy yourself a (no doubt overpriced, imported - and ineffective?) commercial 'spider remover' !
I'm just surprised there wasn't a 12 ga. shottie as a 'backup' mentioned in there..
::rfth::
Well it works for me. If I see a spider, I can immediately catch it. If I have to leave the room to get the cup, it's gone by the time I get back! I also keep one in the car so I don't get caught out that way again.
As I said, killing spiders will make someone worse because they have no respect for them, and they fear what they don't respect.
I think it's the bent knees I don't like, and the scuttling!

She'll find out one day that you're killing them. You're giving her the message that spiders are bad and something to be afraid of. Besides, there's no need for you to kill them. As I said, if you do that, you will continue to be afraid of them.

Really bad idea. Having to depend on other people to remove spiders is so restrictive. I have a friend who had to ring people to come round and remove them for her!
The thing is that in the UK at least you can't avoid spiders. It's not like having a phobia about snakes, for example, where you rarely have to deal with a snake. The best thing is to get over the fear. I still don't like them obviously, but I can deal with them myself now.

No I manage thank you I once sat on top of a dining room table for four hours until ex came home as there was a spider between me and the door.
Nowadays if all else fails I have a super long hoover pipe that means I can get them from 6 foot away.

So you wasted four hours when you could have dealt with it yourself.
When a spider ran across me and I didn't scream because I was in public, I realised that the fear was all self-induced and could be controlled.

When my ex husband though he was being funny taking me to a tarantula tank at the zoo I screamed the place down, vomited on his shoes and fainted.

Re: Ok, cure me please: SPIDERS!
We should live in peace with the hardier species that will eventually inherit this planet we're making uninhabitable for ourselves! But here, here's a gif -- if you can accept its reality, you can live without fear of spiders ...
They (the hundreds of them just in this one tiny space) truly mean you no harm
They (the hundreds of them just in this one tiny space) truly mean you no harm
Re: Ok, cure me please: SPIDERS!
I agree with Ben. They exist, just like you, me, and millions of other life-forms, therefore they have a right to that existance.
As said, the simplest and kindest thing to do, if you can't pick them up, is catch them in a container and put outside.
Traditionally the Chinese wouldn't harm a spider because they do catch the flies. Fear of them can be tackled and overcome if you think along diffrent lines.
Poor little buggers, they can't hurt you can they, unless you're in the tropics and they are poisonous.
PS: I suppose it's easy for me to accept creepy crawlies, being born and bred in the country. City people obviously don't come into contact with such things in the quantity we do.

It can be done eddie. This is the time of year when spiders will come into the house, so you don't want your life to be ruled by fear of these critters.
When you've had a massive spider run all over you on a train and managed to not freak out, then you will be on the way to a cure - try it, it works.

Reptiles love to sun themselves in the morning. Once had a friend who had a job on the Papago Reservation, in a house trailer. She would arrive every morning with 8 or 9 side-winders sunning themselves on the steps.
She said the first one in the morning had to take a broom (left for the occasions) and sweep the critters off the steps before entering.

Re: Ok, cure me please: SPIDERS!
Okay see this is why I disbelieve all the crap I've been told ie:
Spiders will away run into cracks and walls etc so if you see a spider in your bedroom it won't go near you it'll run and find a hole
Bollocks!!
The other night, I saw a slider in my hallway, went to grab a tissue to kill it and it ran under the cupboard door in the hallway.
Then the same spider must've run out of the hallway cupboard and into my daughter's bedroom (opposite cupboard and yes, it was the same one!)
Again, I tried to kill it but missed and it ran under her bookcase. I sprayed the area with my lemongrass oil spray thingy and all was quiet.
Them just now!!! Same fecking spider ran under her bed!!
I killed the fucker.
So they don't just "run away and hide" they stalk the hallways and bedrooms of innocent unsuspecting people.
