Scotland should ‘never leave EU’ - calls for new independence vote grow

Leading Scottish politicians are calling for another referendum on independence from the UK after Britain voted to exit the EU. The Scottish public backed staying in the bloc and former SNP leader Alex Salmond says Scotland should “never leave the EU.”

Salmond made the comments during an interview with Sky News: “The sensible thing for Scotland to do would never be to leave the European Union,” he said.

His comments were backed by the current leader of the SNP, Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, who is also backing a second independence vote, after 62 percent of the population voted to remain in Europe. This was against the tide of the rest of the UK where 52 percent voted to leave the bloc.

"Scotland has delivered a strong, unequivocal vote to remain in the EU, and I welcome that endorsement of our European status," Sturgeon said on Friday before the final result was known, as cited by Reuters.

"Scotland has contributed significantly to the Remain vote across the UK. That reflects the positive campaign the SNP fought, which highlighted the gains and benefits of our EU membership, and people across Scotland have responded to that positive message,” she added.
Sturgeon has remained consistent about her threat to call a second referendum. Speaking in April, she said: “The Scottish parliament should have the right to hold another referendum if there is clear and sustained evidence that independence has become the preferred option of a majority of the Scottish people.”

In May, Salmond said Scotland would not be pulled out of the EU “against its will.”

Same argument applies now as it did then... leaving uk mean that they will have to join the eu as a new member and accept all the criteria... and as a small nation with a population the size of London... they will be a vessel state with no clout and forced to have yhe euro!!!

Only 1.6 million voted to stay in eu this time round... while 2 million have already voted to stay in the UK!!!

They new a eu referendum was coming down the tracks and what that might mean... so they should accept the vote and have faith in the UK that they voted to remain a part of!!!

Let the scottish leave if they want to, as it will end up making them spiral into high unemployment as Ireland did, when it stupidly joined the EU, to its cost. They simple, will struggle, espcially now that oil prices are at an all time low. Of course i would rather they stayed, but maybe its time we became a true English nation. Where we actually decide and vote on things that effect the English.

They only just had a referendum on whether to leave the UK or not, and the voters were well aware that the referendum to leave to EU or not was coming up. They should have thought of that at the time. OK, so I'm surprised at the result, as are others, but it was always a possibility. They just want a second bite of the cherry.

I'm not so sure, tommy. The terms of the UK divorce from the EU have yet to be negotiated.

Scotland may not have to apply to the EU to join, as it could negotiate a loophole that says it simply asserts a right of retention...that is, it retains the EU membership that it had under the UK, while the rest of the UK sails off. The Scots simply don't leave with the rest of the UK.

Actually, the same for Wales and Ireland, but my love is for Scotland.
