Europe gets 8,000 refugees daily - UN

A daily flow of about 8,000 refugees to Europe is likely to continue, the United Nations warns.

The figure came from UN regional coordinator for refugees, Amin Awad, in comments quoted by Reuters news agency.

More than 5,000 refugees - many from Syria or Iraq - arrive daily in Greece.

That flow could continue during the winter if the weather remains good and the borders open, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) told the BBC.

About half a million migrants - mostly from Syria and other conflict zones in the Middle East and Africa - have arrived in Europe this year.

A 51-year-old German woman is being evicted from her home of 16 years to make way for refugees, with shelters already full across the country

A woman in Germany is being evicted from her home of 16 years to make way for asylum-seekers, amid growing concerns over how Germany will find accommodation for the hundreds of thousands of refugees flooding into the country.

Bettina Halbey, a 51-year-old nurse, has lived alone in her flat in the small western German town of Nieheim since her children grew up.

On September 1, she received a letter from her landlord, the local municipality, telling her the building was being turned into a refugee shelter and she had until next May to leave.

“I was completely taken aback,” Ms Halbey told Welt newspaper. “I find it impossible to describe how the city has treated me.”

Spy chief warns Islamist numbers are growing

German intelligence warned Tuesday that the number of Islamic extremists in the country had increased sharply in recent months and expressed serious concern that they were recruiting among refugees.

The Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), Germany's domestic security watchdog, said the number of radical Salafists had surged to 7,900 in September from 7,500 in June, and that many were trying to lure asylum-seekers into their ranks.

"We are very concerned that Islamists in Germany are trying, under the cover of humanitarian assistance, to exploit the situation of the refugees for their own ends and to proselytise and recruit among asylum-seekers," BfV president Hans-Georg Maassen said in a statement.

Germany expects to receive up to one million asylum-seekers this year, five times more than last year. Syrians, who are fleeing their war-ravaged country, form the largest group.

Maassen said that a total of 740 radical Muslims had left Germany to join jihadists in Syria and Iraq, 20 percent of them female. Around one-third of those who went to the region have returned to Germany, while about 120 of them have been killed.

He said the BfV was keeping close watch on such activities given their "significant radicalisation potential" in the migrant community.

"We are keeping a particularly close eye on unaccompanied minors among the refugees, who could be easy targets for Islamists," he said.

Maassen stressed that his office had no evidence that jihadist groups were using the large influx of refugees to infiltrate Germany.

And he said the BfV was also concerned that far-right groups were seizing on the issue of Germany's openness to refugees for propaganda purposes, saying it contained "significant potential for escalation".

Maassen warned that the risk of clashes with left-wing counter-demonstrators also "should not be discounted".

German authorities are applying heavy-handed tactics to find housing for the hundreds of thousands of migrants and refugees pouring into the country from Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

With existing shelters filled to capacity, federal, state and local authorities are now using legally and morally dubious measures — including the expropriation of private property and the eviction of German citizens from their homes — to make room for the newcomers.

German taxpayers are also being obliged to make colossal economic sacrifices to accommodate the influx of migrants, many of whom have no prospect of ever finding a job in the country. Sustaining the 800,000 migrants and refugees who are expected to arrive in Germany in 2015 will cost taxpayers at least at least 11 billion euros ($12 billion) a year for years to come.

In Hamburg, the second-largest city in Germany, municipal officials on September 23 introduced an audacious bill in the local parliament (Hamburgische Bürgerschaft) that would allow the city to seize vacant commercial real estate (office buildings and land) and use it to house migrants.

City officials argue the measure is necessary because more than 400 new migrants are arriving in Hamburg each day and all the existing refugee shelters are full. They say that owners of vacant real estate have refused to make their property available to the city on a voluntary basis, and thus the city should be given the right to take it by force.

I agree. I guess most Europeans haven't experienced the enjoyment of having new peoples, new cultures and new languages among them. We in America have been welcoming others for centuries, Republicans notwithstanding.

When Vietnamese cooking hit the West Coast, we were treated to a crop of restaurants fusing classic parisienne cooking with traditional asian dishes and the result was wonderful. The French had taught the Vietnamese in their country, and they brought the fusion over here. Now they are big, expensive restaurants, but what a wonderful experience.

Contrary to fears, many of these people end up in the up-scale neighborhoods. They are extremely productive and are soon earning more because they are worth more. So far from being a threat, they are a real asset.

Odd, as I stated it was far worse after WW2 with the numbers of refugees in Europe dwarfing any numbers we have hade today. Not only that most of the infrustructure had been destroyed and yet they still coped.

the WWII refugees were indeed refugees from the european continent - hence they were not being imported from external countries but rather displaced internally

they were culturally, religiously and ethnically compatible with the majority dermographic of european population.

the current crisis involves ISIS terrorist fighters, pakistani criminals,sudanese economic migrants and a scattering of genuine refugees

they are imported from external sources and are ALL culturally religiously and ethincally incompatible with european values and morals.

this glaring fact is being made obvious very quickly in countries that have made the mistake of importing large numbers of these people, and the situation will serve to destablise continental europe
