I can't think of a corona joke .......
but seeing as the word means 'crown' - as in coronation - this outbreak certainly takes the top spot as the worst outbreak ever.
The daddy of them all.
Wear your crown with pride.

I'm still waiting for you to back up your claim that Italy has a different more aggressive strain of this virus...!?
You should be ashamed of yourself for your continued failure to provide this information.

Re: Coronavirus updates (gelico's original thread)
Sadly news has just reached us saying that the first member of this group has sadly died because of the Coronavirus.
In his house they found 500 cans of assorted food, 100kg of pasta, 75kg of rice, 200 toilet rolls and 30L of hand sanitiser which he had panic bought from Aldi “just in case!”
The whole lot collapsed and buried the daft ******!

Re: Coronavirus updates (gelico's original thread)
This virus must be terribly frustrating for Iain Duncan Smith.
There is Boris Johnson, his boss , actually performing quite well in the face of immense adversity, trying his hardest to save the lives from Coronavirus of the very same old people Smith has spent years trying to eradicate.

Re: Coronavirus updates (gelico's original thread)
New cases in china are very low figures now... Because they have had things on lockdown for quite some time and these measures are working...
Here in UK and Europe, the govts don't want to do much in the way of imposing similar measures, because they are more concerned about the negative economic/financial aspect of doing so... But this will only result in a worse situation regarding the virus infecting more people, and an even worse negative impact economically and financially...

UK - Boris Johnson has addressed the nation today: [source]
called coronavirus "worst public health crisis for a generation"
warned "many families are going to lose loved ones before their time"
UK is 4 weeks behind Italy
true UK cases likely up to 10,000
if you have symptoms stay home
more drastic measures to come

Well there is a simple reason for that
China imposed basically military intervention and the ability with their wealth to stem this
How do you expect the west to do the same Tommy?
China has the capacity to build a hospital in a week
Its nothing to do with economises.
It shows you have the intellect of a hamster
Countries cannot sustain themselves unless in some order.
The market is already spirally out of control, so your view of the economy is simple as dumb as it gets
The western nations, simple do not have the facilities or capabilities of China
Just as Britain never did in WW2 compared to the US. Being as they were able to ramp up their industries for war5
This is why people like you play on the plight of people to instil fear
Figures in china are still the largest
So what does that tell you Tommy?

Re: Coronavirus updates (gelico's original thread)
It's not about playing on fear or anything else...
It's just common sense!
Look what Italy is doing now, a bit too late in my opinion... But doing it now anyway, when they could have done it much sooner with it having more results
And we are probably going to be ending up doing similar here in UK, and other countries doing it too.
I just think that a widespread temporary lockdown globaly much earlier on would have nipped it in the bud, and much less damaging in the long run.

Not often I agree with you but you are absolutely correct here imo.
As for China still having large numbers of cases - it shouldn't need to be pointed out that China has by far a greater population than nearly every country on Earth.

Tommy the Troll has "the intellect of a hamster" !
Well said, Thorin; though that's probably insuting the hamsters..
***************************************************
Meanwhile, out in the real world, away from Tommy's fearmongering efforts ==
Another contributing factor to China's slowing figures could be that the current expansion 'cycle' for this outbreak has already peaked in China, and will probably peak internationally in the next few months...
Also in China, some factories started reopening a couple of weeks ago, that had closed 2 months or more ago -- after putting new hygiene procedures in place and upgrading protocols to deal with such emergencies..
*******************************************
Yesterday the Oz guvm'nt announced a stimulus package to offset the impending recession, by targeting both the supply and demand side, giving extra payments to pensioners and the unemployed as well as the usual concessions and tax breaks for businesses.
At $17.9 billion Aussie pesos, that's around 50% higher than Donnie Dumpster's first round offer for the US economy, after currency conversions..
Considering that America's population is 13 x larger, we should be expecting a few more announcements from the US gov't week-by-week -- especially with the November election looming over them...

China are reporting 14,500 active cases still... But only 3 new cases...
Italy have about 13,000 active cases now... And reporting 2,650 new cases...
Population of China is nearly 20 times that of Italy

Italy is one country
Are you seriously suggesting we act based on Italy, with so many deaths?
Your view we will be the same is based on zero understanding of age, symptoms and conditions of people that died
Hence you are speculating

You are an idiot!
The numbers in China 'peaked' and slowed because of the strict controls they imposed!!!
No other country has done anything like China has done!!!
Italy measures now are a very weak version of what China did... And China acted much sooner and earlier in their outbreak than Italy have done!
China cases are 50 per million... Italy are currently 250 per million... And rising massively!!!

You know nothing about the people who have died in Italy...
What I was saying was that all countries should have acted as soon as China announced the emergence of this virus... And if travel was restricted then between countries... Then the virus would not be all over the place now... And the efforts that we will all now have to take would not be so great!

I certainly research Tommy, and again you are going off Italy for your views
You think countries should have stopped/restricted all travel for people
Wow, Tommy creates global food shortages with his unsound advice and allows global economies to fall into meltdown

I can see no harm I bringing the Easter holidays forwards 2 weeks as Jules suggested, schools colleges and some universities am would close, suspend all football and music and theatre gigs as well.

Food could still be allowed to travel and special measures put in place to change drivers and haulage cabs at designated points.
Anyway, a shipping container ship takes about a month to get to UK from China, so any crew on board would be clear of virus by the time they got here.
India is about 20 days

It's a distinct possibility. Impeached President Trump met/shook hands with a Brazilian envoy who turned out to have Covid-19. I hear another who met with that same envoy was the mayor of Miami, who is now in quarantine.

It's better if the majority get it, herd immunity. It's going to be seasonal by the looks of things its certainly not going away. Trouble is those of us over 60 and with underlying health problems are more likely to be badly affected or even dead is probably a bonus for the worlds governments. It's definitely a bonus for the planet at least in the short term in the long term not so much I think.

Re: Coronavirus updates (gelico's original thread)
Latest Updates
March 13 (GMT):
UNITED STATES DECLARES NATIONAL EMERGENCY [source]
Coronavirus expert Dr. Anthony Fauci said:
"These kind of things generally run out in a few months. Hopefully, we'll make it several weeks. Eight, nine, whatever weeks, but I can't give you a number, because it depends on how successful we are" (with mitigation and containment measures). Earlier today, Dr. Fauci had said that: [video]
It’s certainly going to get worse before it gets better
Crisis will last for at least several weeks and possibly 2 months or more
Complete shut down like in Italy and China is not off the table. "We just have to respond as things evolve over the days and over the weeks"
Worst Case Scenario by CDC (if no actions taken) [source]
Between 160 million and 214 million people in the U.S. could be infected (Worst case scenario). Dr. Lawler, an infectious diseases specialist, provided a “best guess” projections of 96 million people
Could last months or even over a year
As many as 200,000 to 1.7 million people could die. Dr. Lawler’s calculations: 480,000 deaths, which he said was conservative
By contrast, 20,000 to 50,000 people have died from flu-related illnesses this season according to CDC.
2.4 million to 21 million people in the U.S. could require hospitalization, potentially crushing the nation’s medical system, which has only about 925,000 staffed hospital beds. Fewer than a tenth of those are for people who are critically ill
INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL SHUTTING DOWN
Czech Republic closes its borders: almost no-one will be allowed to enter or leave the country [source]
Turkey: all flights from Turkey to Germany, France, Spain, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Austria, Sweden and the Netherlands are halted until 17 April [source]
Pakistan shuts land borders and limits flights [source]
Oman has already suspended tourist visas for all visitors for 1 month [source]
Iraq adds Germany and Qatar to its coronavirus entry ban list, which now includes 13 countries [source]
Qatar already banned entry of people coming from India and 13 other nations [source]
Ukraine closes borders to foreign visitors for 2 weeks [source]
Slovakia closes borders for non-residents [source]
Israel on March 9 ordered a 14-day quarantine for anyone entering country [source]
India: effective today, all tourist visas and OCI entries are suspended until at least April 15. 14-day quarantine for citizens returning from seven countries: China, Italy, Iran, South Korea, Spain, France and Germany [source] India had already banned, on March 3, entry to nationals of Italy, Iran, South Korea, and Japan [source]
United States: travel ban from Europe goes into effect today at 23:59 ET [original document] Applies to foreign nationals that have been to a country within the Schengen area in the past 14 days
