Pretty much every thread that’s not political turns into something political on here.
It does become rather tedious.

I agree but you often tend to derail some threads and make them about immigrants or Muslims, don’t you?

You just don't like where the discussion is going, and you can't think of an answer. So, you seize on the rules of censorship in order to stop certain discussions.
The real discussion is--or should be--what is wrong, and why this is happening? It's happening because the US, normally the world expert and conscience on health dangers, has undergone a declawing and can no longer respond. Of course Trump comes up because he is the declawer-in-chief. But, make no mistake, the issue is the fecklessness of the US Center for Disease Control.

There are basically two steps that one can take in a pandemic: (1) distancing; and (2) attacking the problem. The first is creating barriers to travel, isolation and barring entry, thus putting distance between the would-be victim and the one who is ill. The second involves sending in medical teams, properly equipped, with proven methods of analysis, testing, trending and cures.
By far, the first is heavy-handed and unproven, while the second is most effective, but requires resources. The US Center for Disease Control (CDC) has always been the place that the world turns to whenever a world-wide threat appears. However, it has been decimated by lack of leadership and deprivation of resources, including lack of funding, and lack of replacements when someone leaves.
Whole research projects have been canceled, which would have kept the CDC up-to-date on any pathogens coming down the pike. By eliminating these projects, when a new pathogen comes along--like Covid-19--the CDC is left months, if not years behind, and having to play catch-up. The world waits, and people die.
I would advocate never putting a stop to the activity of the CDC in the first place. If we can’t have that, then remove the persons and impediments to having it. Get back on track, and never let it happen again. That’s my recommendation.

Aww bless, Thorin is splashing the red about, again. Your fave hobby eh, kid?
All because of my heinous crime of boomeranging your own insult back at you. I said you should look in the mirror when making accusations & I said it jestingly, hence the laughter smiley.
Thanks to whoever tried to neutralise it with a greenie. It's not nice clicking on to a thread and seeing red splashes, like a bloodbath.

Not everyone is fully convinced of that, it's still early days.
Thing is, when you catch flu you get sick very quickly. Very short incubation period.
With corona it can take a while before the symptoms appear - up to two weeks! Hence the infected person can unknowingly spread it around before realising he/she habours the virus. That makes it 'dangerous'. >>
Consider this conundrum. Which vehicle is more dangerous in a crowd?
A huge articulated lorry which has a very loud horn which it always blows ...... versus a small van which has no horn.
Pedestrians can hear the big lorry blowing its horn and they will jump out of its way.
The van won't cause as much injury if it hits people - but it has no way of alerting people to its presence.
The huge articulated lorry is always going to be more dangerous
As the danger is based on the potential harm caused.
Not preventative measures
You are offering a misguided view, that people will always get out of the way , when in panic mode. A smaller lorry is always going to hit lesser people than a bigger one. Those hit, never had a chance to react. As the speed of such an incident. Is beyond the ability of most humans to react to,
Hence you are talking gibberish Jules.
I threw in that analogy of 2 vehicles simply cos I wanted to highlight that there are several variables involved when comparing how deadly these viruses are, not just the stats.
I never did actually say which vehicle was more dangerous, I simply mentioned that they were both dangerous in different ways.
You missed the point, cos you were overthinking it too much, you took things too literally. Then you accuse me of talking gibberish - the post wasn't even addressed to you.
Fricking panto, LMAO!!

March 1 (GMT):
EUROPE
UK: Coronavirus outbreak could force UK to shut down entire cities, health secretary admits. He also said a research paper suggesting half a million people in the UK could die in the event of a flu pandemic was a “reasonable worst-case scenario.”
American Airlines has announced it is suspending flights to and from Milan, Italy from both New York and Miami from March 1, 2020 until April 25, 2020, citing reduced demand. The announcement comes only hours after the U.S. State Department said it was raising its travel warning to Level 4: Do Not Travel for parts of Italy due to the coronavirus outbreak.

While it is true that Italy currently has over 1700 cases... It is also true that if you include these in the calculation compared to numbers who have died, the resulting figure is totally inaccurate because you have added so many new cases that have yet to reach an outcome... But where the resulting outcome for many of these will also actually be death...

I am merely posting figures that are widely available, and that show the real risk, and that show that much more needs to be done to stop the spread of this virus by having much stricter controls on movements and quarantines.
I don't totally trust the figures from China or Iran... Although what they are admitting to is bad enough... The figures we are seeing in more trustworthy countries appear to be much worse...
I don't want any of it... But I think the truth is being downplayed, and I think much more could be and should be being done to contain and stop this virus spreading more widely here in UK and elsewhere... Because I think that the reality of it actually spreading widely will be much much worse!

Every country should have fully closed their borders to China the moment the outbreak was known.
The reason countries, even now, are reluctant to do so wirh widely infected countries, is pure filthy economics.

Obviously exceptions can be made for absolute essentials, but just continuing to allow travel for the wider population is reckless. Apparently the new case in New York came from Iran - how can that be allowed to happen?

Cannot but help feel we are past the point of no return.
It WILL becomes a pandemic, all we can do is minimise personal risk by no unnecessary travel, meeting in huge numbers for music/sporting events and ramping up personal hygiene by meticulous hand washing and using tissues or handkerchiefs.
Getting the virus may be unavoidable, but simple precautions will reduce the chance of catching it.

alls i can suggest is boosting your own immune systems as much as possible

ginger
turmeric
brocolli

Every country should have fully closed their borders to China the moment the outbreak was known.
The reason countries, even now, are reluctant to do so wirh widely infected countries, is pure filthy economics.
It's a bit more complicated than that. Trump has closed our borders for completely different reasons.

Re: Coronavirus updates (gelico's original thread)
On the news yesterday, it was said that Trump was considering closing the US southern border--as if Covid-19 singles out Mexicans.
Trump considered closing the southern border before, and he met great opposition. Mexico is the third largest trading partner with the US, behind only Canada and China. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_largest_trading_partners_of_the_United_States Daily, essentials come across the border, and it would disrupt the US more than anyone else.

For only the second time in my life I am truly scared; the other time was the Cuban missile crisis when I was still on RAF active reserve and received a warning that recall could be imminent.

Re: Coronavirus updates (gelico's original thread)
Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) maintain that the immediate health risk posed by COVID-19 remains low for the general American public, Nancy Messonnier, director of the organization’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, has warned that the disease’s spread throughout the country is “not so much a question of if this will happen anymore, but rather more a question of exactly when this will happen.”

I think the biggest threat we are facing is an overreaction to a very minor threat.

hahahahahaha, very true
i'd still rather that than the coronavirus though
Yep... Forget all the blarney about boosting the immune system..
That's how it really works -- a self-generated 'force field' to keep everybody at a respectable distance, and repel all potential invaders.
And don't forget the chillies, cider vinegar.. And cabbage...
