Malaysia Airlines 777 disappears
This is just in...a Malaysia 777 Airliner, bound from Kuala Lampur to Bejing, has disappeared somewhere over Ho Chi Min airspace.
Just broke, so that's all I have.

239 people aboard a plane that is estimated to have run out of fuel by now if it didn't crash: http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/07/world/asia/malaysia-airlines-plane-missing/index.html?hpt=hp_t1
Re: Malaysia Airlines 777 disappears
Also:
The passengers are of 13 nationalities, the airline said. They were from China and Taiwan (154), Malaysia (38), Indonesia (12), Australia (7), France (3), United States (4), New Zealand (2), Ukraine (2), Canada (2), Russia (1), Italy (1), Netherlands (1), Austria (1).
Re: Malaysia Airlines 777 disappears
Isn't Ho Chi Min City in the south, Mekong delta area? Course, I have no idea why they speculate the plane went down there. Just because that is where they last heard from them...they could be anywhere.

I've got an app on my phone that can connect to the gps in airplanes and track flights. Maybe I should send a copy to HCM control tower.

Malaysia Airlines denies crash report, says plane still missing
(Reuters) - A Malaysia Airlines flight carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew went missing over the South China Sea on Saturday, presumed crashed, as ships from countries closest to its flight path scoured a large search area for any wreckage.
Vietnamese state media, quoting a senior naval official, had reported that the Boeing 777-200ER flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing had crashed off south Vietnam, but Malaysia's transport minister later denied any crash scene had been identified.
"We are doing everything in our power to locate the plane.
We are doing everything we can to ensure every possible angle has been addressed," Transport Minister Hishamuddin Hussein told reporters near the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
"We are looking for accurate information from the Malaysian military. They are waiting for information from the Vietnamese side," he said.

Well, it's probably in the water.
We'd have heard about it if it had crashed on land.

Re: Malaysia Airlines 777 disappears
Terrible.
I have just read that an Austrian and Italian who were "on the flight" are in fact safe and well in their respective countries.
Their passports were stolen some time ago.
Austria's foreign ministry has confirmed that an Austrian citizen reported to be on the flight is safe at home. His passport was stolen two years ago while he was travelling in Thailand, a spokesman said.
by gary.anderson2 3:28 PM
Malaysia Airlines listed one of the passengers on the plane as a 37-year-old Italian called Luigi Maraldi.
However, according to reports in Italy, Mr Maraldi has contacted his parents to say he was not on the airliner.
He had his passport stolen in Thailand several months ago, leaving questions over who had used his passport to board the plane and whether that has anything to do with the airliner's disappearance.

China voices 'deep concern' to North Korea over plane near-miss
BEIJING Fri Mar 7, 2014 5:08am EST
(Reuters) - China has expressed its "deep concern" to North Korea after a Chinese airplane crossed the path of a rocket launched by the isolated state, China's foreign ministry said on Friday.
On Thursday, South Korea's defense ministry said a Chinese civilian plane had "passed as the ballistic missile (from North Korea) was in the course of descending".
The plane was flying from Tokyo's Narita airport to the northeastern Chinese city of Shenyang on Tuesday, the ministry said.
"On this issue, we have already contacted the North Korean side to convey our deep concern," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told a daily news briefing.
China is North Korea's most important diplomatic and economic supporter, though Beijing's patience with Pyongyang has been severely tested following three nuclear tests and numerous bouts of saber rattling, including missile launches.
On Thursday, Qin had said the Chinese airplane was unaffected and urged Pyongyang to ensure the safety of civilian aircraft.
Media reports had identified the Chinese airplane as a China Southern Airlines flight.
Company chairman Si Xianmin confirmed to Reuters that one of his firm's planes intersected the trajectory of the North Korean missile.
"The report is true, but the missile was far away from the plane -- it was six minutes away and I don't know how many kilometers away in terms of altitude," Si told Reuters.
A spokeswoman from the Civil Aviation Administration of China told Reuters on Thursday that she had read the reports but had no knowledge of the incident, adding that the agency had not been contacted by China Southern Airlines.

They track missiles...even if they enter a dead radar zone. They'd be all over such a story by now.
It could be everyone is keeping quiet about it...if it happened.

They didn't track the one that nearly hit the other aircraft, or they wouldn't have had a flight anywhere near the missile.

At least four, maybe up to 6 or 7 stolen passports now identified among passenger list, B'Andy..
(The number of Aussies was lowered from 7 to 6 a couple of hours after the crash ~ that's another on there..).
Terrorist attack now being discussed as top possibility, along with some other form of sudden and catastrophic failure..
A couple of oil slicks have been found and filmed off Vietnam, but as of last nights news (it's now early Monday here..), no signs of wreckage found yet.
For 'Andy's and Smelly's edification (that's their big word for today..) ~ The #1 al Qaeda-linked terrorist group in this region is Jemal Islamiah, based in Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia.
Religions are mixed across local countries, in S.E. Asia. For example =>
Andy and smelly will delight in Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei being a majority Muslim populations.
The Philippines are predominantly Christian, mostly Catholic.
Thailand is mostly Buddhist. As are Burma and several other small states..
Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos may be "communist" in name - if not in businessand tourism, but they never had their religions successfully stripped from them ~ Buddhism and Catholicism dominate, with some native/animistic traditional beliefs still existing in some remote/rural areas.
Hinduism and Sikh faiths also scattered across the region, ith the spread of Indian and Sri Lankan workers across the region..
IT'S a real multicultural hodge-podge wild frontier" in there, boys ! A good place for the narro-minded white-boy honkey bigots of ye Olde World to stay away from...

Looks like a terrorist attack or a sudden catastrophic failure of the aircraft itself leaving the crew with not enough time to report any problems
It'll probably take a a very long time to recover the evidence that now lies at the bottom of the sea.

The terrorist theory was looking good for two days, but whoever it is would be announcing it by now. The catastrophic failure theory seems most promising. Looks like the A380 Air France flight that went down in the Atlantic.
Apparently the South China Sea is very shallow. Where they see the oil slicks it is about 300' only. They should be able to hear the black box locator pings in that shallow water.

I saw that. Not only that, but there is absolutely no debris whatsoever. Even Air France flight #447 left some debris in the Atlantic.
For this reason, they are beginning to look over land. Other anomalies: the tickets bought for the two stolen passports was by an Iranian man. The two stolen passports were traveling together...and they were headed to western Europe, according to their travel itinerary.

Yes, and most likely not over water. An explosion would leave a debris field on the water.
Military radar is more extensive than civilian radar, and the military says the aircraft might have been trying to execute a turn-around. For this reason they are looking in the jungles of east Malaysia.

Asia is one of the most backward regions of the world, FTL.
As for terrorist demands, on the explosion theory, it's beginning to look like it was a plot that was intended for western Europe. Somebody screwed up. Obviously, travel has been curtailed.

If it was a plot destined for western Europe, they wouldn't have had enough fuel on board to carry the plane there.

Some kind of military experiment, testing a device on a civilian aircraft that can cloak a plane, so that it can land elsewhere without being detected?
Weird i know, but you start to go there, with a story like this.

This all looks highly strange.
Common sense says the plane suffered a catastrophic disaster mid-air - but the evidence should be out there, floating in the sea, emitting an alert beacon lcating the black box.
There could of course be more to this than meets the eye. Hijacked by the pilots?
