First topic message reminder :

Jamie Oliver has been accused of cultural appropriation by Labour's shadow women and equalities minister and other social media users for launching 'punchy jerk rice'. Dawn Butler, the MP for Brent Central in north west London, picked up on comments from social media about the product and joined in with her own criticism.

She suggested Oliver was using the word jerk to increase the sales of his rice and his product was not faithful to the original Caribbean recipe which is usually a marinade for meat. The Labour MP also suggested father-of-five ask Levi Roots, the creator of jerk barbeque sauce Reggae Reggae sauce, to teach him about it.

Ms Butler tweeted: '#jamieoliver @jamieoliver #jerk I'm just wondering do you know what #Jamaican #jerk actually is?

'It's not just a word you put before stuff to sell products. @levirootsmusic should do a masterclass. Your jerk Rice is not ok. This appropriation from Jamaica needs to stop.'

Jerk can refer to a type of cooking which involves marinating meat in a jerk spice mixture, or the marinade itself. It originated in Jamaica.

The spice mix itself primarily uses allspice and Scotch bonnet peppers - neither of which are listed on the ingredients list for Mr Oliver's product - alongside others.

David Llewellyn wrote: 'I was about to headbutt my desk over this tweet from Dawn Butler because most cultural appropriation brouhahas are nonsense.

'Then I saw this description of Jamie Oliver's "Jerk" Rice. On what planet can "garlic, ginger and jalapenos" be described as "Jerk"?'

Many jerk recipes involve meat such as chicken or pork, but Mr Oliver's £2.30 microwaveable rice offering is vegetarian, with the packaging suggesting it is 'seriously good' with chicken wings.

Sainsbury's, Morrisons, and Waitrose all stock the product on their websites.

Seriously, people cannot win. If people embrace multiculturalism, they get accused of Cultural appropriation. If they dont embrace multiculturalism, they get accused of racism

Jamie, should tell those complaining to jog on.

Oh and by the way you are clueless also on pasta

All noodles are pasta, all pastas are not noodles. For instance couscous is pasta, but it bears no resemblance to a noodle. Most pasta is made of wheat flour, but not all.

And more so you are going off pasta and not the sauces,. Even though pasta originates in Europe in tangent with noodles in Asia

In other words, they originated seperately

When tomatoes originate from South America

Again, this is why food is Universal and to claim cultural appropriation on food. Is just plain leftist drivel.

Why?
They gave new recipes new names  Suspect Suspect Suspect
Even with Pasta which is just the Italian word for noodles found in dozens of cultures
it's Their variant, they gave it a name.

You think an ingredient can't be used? what sort of strawman are you trying to jerk off to Jamie Oliver is accused of 'cultural appropriation' for launching jerk rice: Labour MP joins social media outrage and tells chef the Caribbean dish is 'not just a word you put before stuff to sell products' - Page 3 1132368643

New?

And yet you do not shout cultural appropriation?

How uch are you backing me now?

Seriously?

Jamie Oliver offers a new form of Jerk with vegintarian rice and that is taboo for you. Yet you accept variations of Marinara sauce?

Come again?

Can you show me anywhere that I stated that an ingredient cannot be used in an authentic dish or sauce?

I never did, you just made that bullshit up. To deflect away from you talking bullshit

It's not Jerk Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes
there are dozens if not 100's of variations of jerk Since each Jamaican grandma has their own
all meet the minimum requirement of containing scotch bonnets and all spice.

Jamies doesn't contain either thus he is culturally appropriating the WORD Jerk (in context of food) and reducing it to meaningless marketing drivel.

Again it is just YOU not understanding what people are talking about Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

He could have sold Jerk Rice that meet the minimum requirement to be called jerk, it's 2 Ingredients really not that hard  Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes
Or he could have called his Not-Jerk rice something else Like Jamaican style rice or a New name Like the Italians did tongue tongue tongue

Most pasta sauces do not contain celery or carrot.

Let’s sue them

I think that is wrong and is cultural appropriation by the author, much like Jamie, although not as bad since it at least contain one of the minimum ingredients.

bolognese specifically has meat and specifically comes from Bologna so can't be "all regions" Cool
It doesn't meet the minimum for bolognese which is just meat and crushed tomatoes. but will almost always have other things depending on the cooks inclination.
the Minimum for Neapolitan is Crushed tomatoes and Garlic
the Minimum for Carbonara is Cream and egg

like the Minimum for Jerk is Scotch bonnets and All spice Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

generally all of these will contain other things

And that's not even what has occurred
Jamie has made up something that doesn't meet the Minimum requirements to Jerk and then proceeded o Market it as Jerk

Now this proves how dumb you are

So a vegitarian bolognese is not a bolognese to Veya

Talk about Authoritarinism

in the 1st century AD writings of Horace, lagana (singular: laganum) were fine sheets of fried dough[11] and were an everyday foodstuff.[12] Writing in the 2nd century Athenaeus of Naucratis provides a recipe for lagana which he attributes to the 1st century Chrysippus of Tyana: sheets of dough made of wheat flour and the juice of crushed lettuce, then flavoured with spices and deep-fried in oil.[12] An early 5th century cookbook describes a dish called lagana that consisted of layers of dough with meat stuffing, an ancestor of modern-day lasagna.[12] However, the method of cooking these sheets of dough does not correspond to our modern definition of either a fresh or dry pasta product, which only had similar basic ingredients and perhaps the shape.[12] The first concrete information concerning pasta products in Italy dates from the 13th or 14th century.

it is an anglofied sauce, it's from Italian American Cuisine (there is also a Aussie/NZ variant)

Marinara (English: "mariner's") sauce is an Italian tomato sauce, usually made with tomatoes, garlic, herbs, and onions.[1][2] Its many variations can include the addition of capers, olives, spices, and a dash of wine.[3][4]
This sauce is widely used in Italian-American cuisine, which has diverged from its Old World origins.[5]
Italians refer to marinara sauce only in association with other recipes. For instance, spaghetti alla marinara literally translates to "spaghetti mariner's style" (from the adjective marinara with the feminine suffix -a pertaining to salsa, Italian for "sauce", and also to maniera, Italian for "style"), but tomato sauce alone in Italy is called sugo/salsa al/di pomodoro or pummarola (the latter being Neapolitan language).
This is not to be confused with spaghetti marinara, a popular dish in Italy, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa where a tomato-based sauce is mixed with fresh seafood.[

And no, it's not because it still meets the Minimum requirements
Actually that is very faithfully recreated (showing respect to the originating culture) it's just replacing the bacon with 'turkey bacon' pig
it is the perfect example of what Jamie Should have done to be 'embracing Multiculturalism'

Rogan Josh is  a staple curry dish known around the world.   Most people and recipes think the red colouring comes from tomatoes and/or tomato paste and you'll find that most recipes/curry houses cook it with tomatoes.  But the original dish has no tomatoes.   Do you see anyone up in arms over that?

I've never heard anything so fucking stupid as these people pearl clutching over this cultural appropriate of 'their' food.    Particularly when the origins of Jerk came from slaves foraging for spices they were unfamiliar with in a land alien to them.

Jerk is a style of cooking.   It shouldn't 'belong' to anyone.  It's just food.

And for some balance, here in the UK there's some people who think a Cornish pasty should not be made outside of Cornwall..and to them I'd say the same thing.  Get a fucking life.

That's not actually the point.
it's not using someone else cooking style or adding to an existing recipe, in the case of rogan josh it is the blend of spices that make it rogan josh. added any meat or vegetables you want.

it using a specific name for cultural icon and using it inaccurately as a generic-ism for their entire culture.
SO its like making Butter Chicken(or any curry like thing) and marketing it as Rogan Josh.

And your insinuation that their culture is irrelevant because it is a few hundred years old is pretty insulting. Particularly since it is still centuries older than modern Australia. Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

this particular product should not have jerk at all because it is 100% got nothing in common with jerk.
IF Jamie had made a jerk sauce he could sell it as jerk sauce, the issue is he has not made anything like a jerk product (it's actually rice not a sauce) and selling it as jerk. This reducing Jamaica's treasured cultural icon to a meaningless advertising generic-ism.

it's like a Chinese guy writing his own plays in Broadway style and selling them as Shakespearean  Wink
it's just 100% incorrect and obviously offensive to originators to have something they culturally value openly misused (particularly for profit)

Cultural Appropriation is not limited to food dingus Wink

If fact it has nothing to do with food, Unless the specific food is a cultural icon. In which case the aspect that makes it Cultural Appropriation is the disrespectful and/or improper use of the cultural icon. Cool

Also clearly stated multiple times if Jamie had made jerk sauce he could have sold jerk sauce, that is not the issue. the issue is he has just taken the name of a cultural icon and slapped it thoughtlessly on some crap that has nothing in common with the cultural icon AND proceeded to market it as the cultural icon.

Really has nothing to do with any of the crap your posting, because no one is saying foods don't or shouldn't migrate and evolve   Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes
It's about misrepresenting someones culture, not copying it.

People make a fuss of brand names for a reason. Apart from cultural sensitivities, there's the far bigger issue of commercial sensitivities.

The branding of products such as, eg,  … Champagne, Cornish Pasties, Stilton cheese, Whisky types . . . is strictly controlled by law.

For non patent names like ''jerk'' it's a grey area.

Brand names sell products and riding on the coat tails of established brands is poor ethics.

Laughing

What's the bet that when that particular product eventually hits the supermarket shelves in Oz and the USA, they will have removed the words 'Jamaican' and 'Jerk' from the label and advertising, to avoid a repeat of this nonsense ?
