Worldwide Social Media Outrage After Muslim Students Killed In North Carolina
The fatal shooting of three Muslim students in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Tuesday afternoon has prompted uproar around the world, particularly from Muslims in the Middle East who say U.S. media coverage of stories involving Muslims is often biased.
Craig Stephen Hicks, 46, surrendered to police after allegedly killing 23-year-old Deah Barakat, his wife Yusor Abu-Salha, 21, and her sister, Razan Abu-Salha, 19, in their home.
It's not fully clear what prompted the shooting. Some reports point to a possible parking dispute as the catalyst, although Hicks also appeared to harbor vehemently anti-religious views, not only toward Islam but toward all faiths. His Facebook page includes a post denouncing both Christianity and Islam. In January, Hicks posted a photo of what he claimed was his .38-caliber revolver.
Only a few media outlets, most of them local news organizations, reported on the killings late into the night on Tuesday. Some critics on social media suggested that because the victims were Muslims, national media was not quicker to cover the story. Meanwhile, critics say, U.S. media is rife with coverage of the Islamic State and other Muslim extremist groups, as well as commentary about how Islam is supposedly the most dangerous of all the major religions.
Many Muslims on social media predicted that Hicks, as a white man, is likely to be labeled as mentally ill, while a Muslim shooter would automatically be considered a terrorist.
"I would like to see world leaders condemning their murder," Seema Huneidi, a 22-year-old Jordanian communications and media specialist, told The WorldPost. "I would like to see public uproar. But most importantly I would like to see these innocent victims get the same treatment and coverage that the Sydney Lindt Café hostage situation and the Charlie Hebdo attacks got."
The evidence of social media suggests that the young, recently married couple killed Tuesday were dedicated humanitarians. Yusor Abu-Salha, who was reportedly studying human biology at North Carolina State University, had posted photos on her Facebook of a recent trip to Turkey, where she said she volunteered at a makeshift dental clinic helping Syrian refugees. Barakat, a dental student at UNC-Chapel Hill, was planning to travel to Turkey this summer. He'd set up a fundraising campaign called "Syria Smiles" to provide dental care to Syrians in need. So far, $39,666 has been raised.
Zaher Sahloul, president of the Syrian American Medical Society, called Bakarat a "model dentist who helped the Syrian people against the world's apathy." He compared Bakarat's death to that of Kayla Mueller, the young American hostage who, it was confirmed this week, recently died as a captive of the Islamic State militant group.
Some people, furious with the media coverage of the killings, took to Twitter to mourn the loss of the young Chapel Hill family, with many using the hashtags #MuslimLivesMatter and #ChapelHillShooting.

It wasn't. The young man and his wife had travelled by bus and the sister had parked hours previously some distance away.

That part receives mention here, but it is not played up. The press is still going with what the Chapel Hill polices say...it was a parking dispute.
But hey...North Carolina. I wouldn't trust them either.

Re: Worldwide Social Media Outrage After Muslim Students Killed In North Carolina
Obama says FBI to investigate Chapel Hill slaying of three young Muslims
US President Barack Obama announced on Friday that the FBI will investigate the murders of three young Muslim college students in North Carolina.
“Yesterday, the FBI opened an inquiry into the brutal and outrageous murders of Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, Deah Shaddy Barakat, and Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha in Chapel Hill, North Carolina,” Obama said in a statement released to the press. “In addition to the ongoing investigation by local authorities, the FBI is taking steps to determine whether federal laws were violated.”
“No one in the United States of America should ever be targeted because of who they are, what they look like, or how they worship,” the president said. “Michelle and I offer our condolences to the victims’ loved ones. As we saw with the overwhelming presence at the funeral of these young Americans, we are all one American family. Whenever anyone is taken from us before their time, we remember how they lived their lives – and the words of one of the victims should inspire the way we live ours.”
On Thursday, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan criticized Obama for his silence following the killings.
Barakat and Yusor Abu-Salha traveled to Turkey to help perform fillings and root canals for refugees, while Razan Abu-Salha helped develop a video that was intended to spread positive messages about being Muslim-American.
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday praised the three victims as representing the best values of global citizenship and said he was deeply moved by scenes of thousands of people mourning their deaths.
Police charged the couple's neighbor with murder. They say initial findings indicate a dispute over parking prompted the shooting, but they are looking into whether Hicks was motivated by hatred toward the victims because they were Muslim.
"At a time of troubling tensions stoked by those who seek to twist the teachings of faith and sow division, these three young people represented the best values of global citizenship and active community compassion to build a better world for all," UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters on Friday.
Thousands of mourners attended funeral prayers for them on Thursday.
The case has garnered international attention, prompting vigils and the hashtag #MuslimLivesMatter on social media, and raising concerns among some Muslim advocates in the United States who say they have seen an increase in threats against their communities in recent weeks.

Re: Worldwide Social Media Outrage After Muslim Students Killed In North Carolina
Obama can send in the Justice Department, just as he did with the Wilson case. But it's a tough case to make.
The Federal law is a part of the post-Civil War legislation, dealing with quelling southerners who would violate the civil rights of blacks. It is an element of 42 USC 1981-88, that racial or ethnic animus be shown. Just because someone assaulted or killed someone of another race does not make out the violation, as it does for the criminal law.
That's why so often you hear that the Feds are coming into the investigation, but afterwards you find nothing came of it. So until we hear of actual facts of racial or ethnic animus, all we have is the parking dispute alleged by the Chapel Hill police. Keep in mind, southern law enforcement is not friendly toward predicating crimes on civil rights issues. Not their favorite.

Apparently several thousand people attended their funeral.
Re: Worldwide Social Media Outrage After Muslim Students Killed In North Carolina
Being verified, relatives did not get to see the bodies until today, they had been forced to kneel and were shot in the back on the head. Also, the couple had travelled by bus, sister had parked her car in the morning, murder happened in evening.

Re: Worldwide Social Media Outrage After Muslim Students Killed In North Carolina
Seriously how fucking stupid this media attention has now become over the sad deaths of these 3 Muslims, to the point to have it equate in the media to the daily levels of terrorism done by extremist Muslims, as if to cancel this out in some ridiculous fashion.
Seriously mindless idiots on this are doing the Muslims no favours here or the deaths of these innocent 3 Muslims. Whether it was a hate crime or a murder over a dispute, the media attention has been blow out of all proportions where they are regular hate crime murders in the US which do not receive such media attention.
That fuckwit Imran Rawza does not understand the fundamental aspects of terrorism, where we know Hamas admitted they were behind the attacks. It was thus a politically motivated attack used to instill terror on the Israeli's. TO equate this crime to that, shows why this is idiotic because it is as if it is trying to now down play real Islamic terrorism to the levels of hate crimes or even worse public disputes now.
Lets get things into perspective, whilst this was a horrific crime the levels of media attention has been way over the top.

It has every relevance and people like yourself are making the divide between Muslims and Non-Muslims more of a reality, when all should be working towards unity.
You again just do not like the facts and this story has been as proven, has been blown out of all proportions, where even worse many of the facts of the case are unknown as of yet to the public

Chapel Hill mourners demand justice for killings
Relatives and friends grieve as three Muslim American students, killed in what they say is a hate crime, are buried.
CHAPEL HILL, NC - Namee Barakat, the father of one of the three slain students killed in their home in the college town of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, has said he believes the murders of his son, his daughter-in-law and her sister were motivated by hate, and that the killer acted purposefully.
"Absolutely it's a hate crime, no ifs or buts about it. It is just as clear as it can be," Barakat told Al Jazeera.
Of the investigation currently under way by local and federal law enforcement Barakat said, "we won't accept anything less" than that finding.
Those sentiments were echoed by family and friends of the victims, 23-year-old University of North Carolina dental student Deah Shaddy Barakat, his wife, 21-year-old North Carolina State (NCS) graduate Yusor Mohammad, and her sister, 19-year-old Razan Abu-Salha, who was a student at NCS.
All three were buried on Thursday in a service that was attended by an estimated five thousand people.
"We ask that you celebrate the memories of our family members. We are still in a state of shock and will never be able to make sense of this horrendous tragedy. We appreciate your concerns and the outpouring of love and support", said Suzanne Barakat, Deah's sister.
On Friday, US President Barack Obama announced that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has opened an investigation on the case.
"No one in the United States of America should ever be targeted because of who they are, what they look like, or how they worship," he said.
Outrage over 'parking dispute'
The suspect in the killings, 46-year-old Craig Stephen Hicks has been charged with three counts of first degree murder.
In its initial statement, Chapel Hill Police said, "our preliminary investigation indicates that the crime was motivated by an ongoing neighbour dispute over parking".
That explanation outraged many in the community, and launched renewed debate across the country over the treatment of Muslims in the US.
Inside Story: Were killings a hate crime?
"We are concerned that the anti-Muslim rhetoric may have angered some to commit violence against American Muslims," said Azhar Azeez, president of the Islamic Society of North America who was among those in attendance.
Other leaders followed.
"We ask our administration, our president to take a stand and to say that bashing Muslims is not acceptable in this country," said Osama Abuirshaid, National Coordinator for American Muslims for Palestine.
The father of the two women killed was clear about what the family expected from this investigation. "We want this acknowledged for what it is," said Mohammad Abu-Salha at Thursday's service.
The murder he said had "hate crime written all over it".
Chapel Hill Police Chief Christopher Blue who attended the services reiterated his promise to thoroughly investigate.
"I just want to recommit that we are examining every possible angle to include the potential for a hate crime."
The FBI has also launched its own investigation.
The suspect in the deaths of the students had at least a dozen firearms in his home, according to search warrants released on Friday.
Warrants filed in court listed an inventory of the weapons seized by police, including four handguns, a pistol that Hicks had with him when he turned himself in to the police about an hour after the shootings and two shotguns and six rifles.
Police also recovered numerous loaded magazines and cases of ammunition.
Whether the police determine that the crime was inspired by hate or not, members of the Islamic community, both locally and nationally, have called for peace and unity in the aftermath of the tragedy.
Omid Safi, a professor and the director of the Duke Islamic Studies Center, said that many local Muslims had expressed fear after the murders. Still, Safi said that it was important to overcome such fears.
"You're seeing an attempt to not stay segregated and separate from the larger Chapel Hill community but to reach out to people for support, solidarity," he said.
"That’s meaningful. That’s a wonderful sign, and I hope we keep following in the direction."
A vigil held in the victims' honour Wednesday night provided an opportunity for many in attendance to become familiar with the three victims, and learn about the promise their lives held.
More than a thousand people came to show their support.
Declared 'winners'
Speaker after speaker described the three as "winners".
Deah was a second-year student at UNC’s School of Dentistry after graduating from NC State.
Yusor also graduated from NC State and planned to enroll in UNC’s dentistry school this fall. Razan excelled as an undergraduate architecture student at NC State.
The three victims were all involved in charity work, and those that survived them attested to their character and generosity.
Tiffany Brannan, the director of communications at the dentistry school, remembered a time when Deah purchased a coffeemaker for the school when he noticed it needed one.
"She was kind and loyal, she was the best friend anyone could ever have," said NC State student Yasmin Aniya of Razan, speaking through tears.
"We spent every single day together, texted every day, she was my best friend. She was my sister."
Aniya said she plans to run a half marathon in Razan’s name to raise funds for Deah’s dental relief effort.
Donations rocket
Brannan said Deah was raising money for a group he was involved in called Syrian Dental Relief to travel to Turkey to provide dental care to Syrian refugees living there.
Brannan said that Deah had raised $13,000 for the refugees, but since his death, the total has rocketed to more than $200,000 raised.
The website shows Deah making a personal appeal for people to help donate to help the refugees.
His father wanted people to know that all three were peace-loving souls.
"Deah [Barakat] and his wife [Yusor Mohammad] and her sister [Razan Abu-Salha] are the most peaceful individuals that you would ever want to meet," he told Al Jazeera.
"They would not argue with anybody, they would not say anything to anybody outside of the decent way of speaking. They would not use cross words whatsoever. They are just, very close to perfect."

Were killings a hate crime?
That is the sole question, right there. So far, I have seen no evidence of it. Saying it, believing it, wishing it...won't make it so. There must be evidence.

I hadn't even heard about this until I read it here, certainly haven't seen any outrage.
Police believe it to be an ongoing neighbour dispute.

Re: Worldwide Social Media Outrage After Muslim Students Killed In North Carolina
Well, Flap is hardly the hub of 'social media' is it.
US President Barack Obama has denounced the killing of three Muslim students in Chapel Hill, North Carolina as "brutal and outrageous murders".
In a statement, Mr Obama said no one in the US should be targeted for "what they look like" or "how they worship".
His comments came after criticism from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan over Mr Obama's silence on the case.
With a suspect in custody, police are still investigating the motive, amid family claims it was a hate crime.
The FBI has opened an inquiry into the case.
Deah Shaddy Barakat, his wife Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha and her sister Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha were found dead on Tuesday evening in their home near the University of North Carolina, where Mr Barakat was a dental student.
Craig Hicks, a neighbour of the students, has been charged with the murders. Mr Hicks' Facebook profile included a photo that read "Atheists for Equality". He also frequently posted quotes critical of religion.
But Mr Hicks' wife Karen said the incident had nothing to do with religion and her husband treated everyone equally.
Mr Obama called the murders "brutal and outrageous" and said the FBI would be investigating whether any "federal laws were violated".
"Michelle and I offer our condolences to the victims' loved ones," he said.
The three students had been threatened before, a relative told Rajini Vaidyanathan at a vigil earlier this week
"As we saw with the overwhelming presence at the funeral of these young Americans, we are all one American family."
More than 5,000 people attended a funeral on Thursday for the three students.
Neighbours told the BBC Mr Hicks was involved in a series of parking disputes. Police also said that their initial investigation showed that there had been an ongoing parking dispute.
But the BBC's Rajini Vaidyanathan said many mourners at the funeral feel the murders were sparked by something far deeper than a parking row.
Family members of the victims say Mr Hicks had previously "picked on" the married couple and deliberately showed his firearm.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-31463458
The couple had been using the bus and the sister had parked in the morning (shootings happened at approx 5pm) in a parking space away from the building. They were killed in the couples home, forced to kneel an shot in the back of the head. Of course that always happens over a parking dispute. He had threatened them many times previously.

Re: Worldwide Social Media Outrage After Muslim Students Killed In North Carolina
Good for Obama, but again is pandering to something that has been blown out of all proportions, where again we see a real terrorist action in Copenhagen. The fact is people are trying to equate both crimes as the same, which are far removed in their motivations and goals, this latest killings being terrorism. Yes it is an appalling crime that was committed to the 3 Muslims, but the media explosion on this crime has been blown out of all proportion.

It appears the killings were 'brutal' and 'outrageous'. All three were shot in the back of the head, execution-style. So the President is correct in that regard.

In fact, that is against the law. A bit redundant of him, but I am pleased at the President reiterating.

Oh? Is Turkey finally going to help the Kurds in fighting ISIL? I am pleased to see the President of Turkey so concerned about the well-being of Muslims. Perhaps he might be even more generous and offer a bit of Turkish territory to add to the Kurdistan being carved out of Iraqi territory. It's the right thing to do, being as he is in the mood.

Under North Carolina law, a 'hate crime' allegation is a sentencing enhancement, no more. Whether it is raised by the NC authorities, or by the FBI under 42 USC 1981-88, there needs to be evidence of a motive linked to 1) a specific race, ethnicity or religion referenced; and 2) expressed antipathy or threats toward the same. Frankly, every single one of us, at one time or another, has been critical somehow of religion. Our opinions are our right. So I don't think mere mention of religion qualifies as evidence of a hate crime.
And keep in mind, you are looking for evidence of hate (animus); it remains that speech (an idea) is protected by the First Amendment. Speech may be evidence, but it is not in and of itself a crime. This is a tough case to make, for merely an enhancement.

I awoke Wednesday to tweets about the awful killings of three Chapel Hill people. After I got the gist of the story – information about the shooter was still leaking out – I quickly came upon complaints that the “news media” weren’t treating the deaths of three Muslims with the appropriate importance.
The local papers and TV stations – local being the Triangle – were all over it. But I looked at Google News and the New York Times, and, in fact, the story didn’t rate much. But it was 5 a.m. so I wasn’t that surprised.
Then, at 9 a.m. the complaints about media coverage continued on Twitter. By that time, the Chapel Hill shootings were the top story on Google News, and all of the traditional national news outlets had the story at the top or near the top of their home pages. I mentioned that on Twitter. One response was that the Charlie Hebdo murders were all over the news immediately.
Two quick takes:
1. Small market + little information + overnight development = slow national media attention.
2. Worldwide market + passionate people on Twitter + enough info for 140 characters = viral attention
The background:
Location: Chapel Hill isn’t Paris. It’s a small market covered by a campus newspaper and with daily newspapers and television stations in nearby cities.
Time: The shootings happened at 5:11 p.m.
Information: Police released information slowly. Even relatives of the victims were begging for information at 8:30. Later in the evening, police were saying that no more information would be available until (Wednesday). At 2 a.m. police released the names of the victims and suspect.
Social media: Exploded with facts and speculation and concern and sympathy. And questions – about the shooter, about the family, about the news coverage. A hashtag #ChapelHillShooting trended worldwide. Still is.
It’s the perfect example of how the news ecosystem works now:
A news event happens outside the major media markets. People – journalists and citizens – on the scene tweet what they know and see. (Yes, some people tweet what they don’t know but guess. Deal with it.) In a city without a TV station or daily newspaper, news reports from traditional sources emerge more slowly.
The event happens in the evening and details – details that form the substance of reports for major media outlets – leak out in the darkest hours of the late night. 2 a.m.? I don’t know for sure, but I’m guessing that few reporters or editors are working at 2 a.m. Overnight crews at newspapers and TV networks might see them. But it’s tough to get confirmation from official sources at 2 or 3 a.m.
Meanwhile, people with interest and passion are following the tweets and retweets. Because it is the worldwide web, they are in different time zones. What’s 4 a.m. to me could be noon to them. The world there is awake while ours sleeps.
The story spreads and, with the vacuum of real-time information, questions spread. Where’s the information? Why isn’t the media telling us anything? Is this a bias against people of color? Of different religion? Of different nationality?
By the time the national mainstream journalism outlets get their boots on 12, 13 hours after the police were first called, many have used this as example of media bias and/or incompetence.
Maybe it is. But I think it’s more of an example of how the news ecosystem works now. Social media runs faster and hotter than traditional media, which is slowed by the need for official information, detail and verification.
It’s ironic that people are using the web to communicate throughout the world about the killings via Twitter and social media but don’t take a moment to search out WRAL or The News & Observer or the Daily Tar Heel to get real-time coverage. They have been on it from the beginning.
But that’s one of the points of the news ecosystem. I want the information from the sources I know. Many people will search for news – but many want it to come to them, to be where they are. And in this case, the big boys – the Times, the Post, the networks – didn’t have it. In effect, they failed their readers, through no real fault of their own.
I don’t know how traditional news outlets address this, and I hope smarter minds figure it out. It’s an issue of trust and of reliability.

Guess you are too behind the times to keep up with the way news stories go round the world on Twitter before the main media gets the info.

Re: Worldwide Social Media Outrage After Muslim Students Killed In North Carolina
and twitter is a pile of misinformed "twitter"
exactly as described
just like a LOT of "tinternet"
i mean
just for example.....
2Sometimes it DOES take a Rocket Scientist!!
Scientists at Rolls Royce built a gun specifically to launch dead chickens at the windshields of airliners and military jets all travelling at maximum velocity.
The idea is to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields.
American engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the Windshields of their new high speed trains.
Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to the American engineers.
When the gun was fired, the engineers stood shocked as the chicken hurled out of the barrel, crashed into the shatterproof shield, smashed it to smithereens, blasted through the control console, snapped the engineer's back-rest in two and embedded itself in the back wall of the cabin like an arrow shot from a bow..
The horrified Yanks sent Rolls Royce the disastrous results of the experiment, along with the designs of the windshield and begged the British scientists for suggestions.
Rolls Royce responded with a one-line memo:
"Defrost the chicken."
true or false??? and no googling or prior knowlege please.....

Actually, it's probably the most informative thing on the internet and most people now use it for political and information purposes, very few now talk about what they are actuall doing. I thought like you until I started to use it, then I found I was pointed to so much information that I would never have known before. It's pretty bloody good for finding lost dogs and children as well.

yes there is some good info and stuff...but most of it is either trivia (not that there is anything wrong with trivia....if thats what floats yer boat) celebrity nonsense(which should be banned)
and total lies exaggerations and untruths
personally I havnt the time to sift one from the other.....

You don't have to sift it, you just follow people who are talking about the world, politics and what is going on rather than talking personal stuff.

No, you follow people with all kinds of views in order to get the widest opinions possible, and the most information. Following overseas journalists is good because you get a different perspective. I follow Lynton Crosby, David Cameron's spin doctor, and have had quite a few discussions with him. You are not limited to people in this country, but get a world view.

the only problem with THAT idea is that THE ONLY people who post about such things on twitter are those who can be bothered, and lets face it THEY are the ones with either an axe to grind or an agenda to persue......That does NOT make them "guru's ...who's every word should be clung to.....

Re: Worldwide Social Media Outrage After Muslim Students Killed In North Carolina
Who said anyone viewed anyone as gurus, or cling to their every word. Sorry Victor, but you obviously don't know how Twitter works or how you can pick up information that is not known in this country and discuss politics with people of every persuasion all over the world. In the beginning Twitter was a way of talking to friends, now it is a world wide force for information and political thought of every kind.

Twitter is very very bad for that.

Don't be silly, how can you follow a herd when you follow people of all persuasions all over the world to hear DIFFERENT opinions from DIFFERENT perspectives. The ones who follow a herd tend to be RW and only want to hear RW opinions.
