The message which read "1 RT = 1 breakfast for a vulnerable child" was sent from the @KelloggsUK account at 4pm on Sunday UTC (3am Tuesday AEDT), triggering a swift social media backlash.

The company was trying to promote its Give A Child A Breakfast campaign.

Some enraged followers pointed out that the tweet suggested the company would only be donating breakfasts to vulnerable children if the initiative received sufficient publicity.

Others criticised the company's ill-conceived social media campaign.

I Think Social Media is in the wrong here. they are still trying to do a good thing, and even if they did supply breakfasts equal to the number of retweets (which they are not, they are funding a program) it would still mean a whole lot of hungry kids get fed.

A better response would have been to hold Kelloggs to that promise and retweet the bejebus out of it.

I agree; Kelloggs should be lauded for doing something good in the world, and one of the best ways to convince companies to do so is to simply point out that people will like them more. I'd hate to see companies stop doing things like this for fear of a misguided backlash.
