Greta Thunberg named Time Magazine's 'Person of the Year'

What a fantastic choice!
Greta Thunberg sits in silence in the cabin of the boat that will take her across the Atlantic Ocean. Inside, there’s a cow skull hanging on the wall, a faded globe, a child’s yellow raincoat. Outside, it’s a tempest: rain pelts the boat, ice coats the decks, and the sea batters the vessel that will take this slight girl, her father and a few companions from Virginia to Portugal. For a moment, it’s as if Thunberg were the eye of a hurricane, a pool of resolve at the center of swirling chaos. In here, she speaks quietly. Out there, the entire natural world seems to amplify her small voice, screaming along with her.
“We can’t just continue living as if there was no tomorrow, because there is a tomorrow,” she says, tugging on the sleeve of her blue sweatshirt. “That is all we are saying.”
It’s a simple truth, delivered by a teenage girl in a fateful moment. The sailboat, La Vagabonde, will shepherd Thunberg to the Port of Lisbon, and from there she will travel to Madrid, where the United Nations is hosting this year’s climate conference. It is the last such summit before nations commit to new plans to meet a major deadline set by the Paris Agreement. Unless they agree on transformative action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the world’s temperature rise since the Industrial Revolution will hit the 1.5°C mark—an eventuality that scientists warn will expose some 350 million additional people to drought and push roughly 120 million people into extreme poverty by 2030. For every fraction of a degree that temperatures increase, these problems will worsen. This is not fearmongering; this is science.

It's a recognition of a nominated person's, group's, or movements' influence on the planet..
Whether positive or negative..
Constant lying claims to the contrary from you, DopeyDawg, or DYKbrain, doesn't change the intent of Time Magazine's nominations -- irregardless of how much huffing and puffing we see from you poor snowflakes.

I get she has opened eyes to people
But was this more media staged?
I actually feel sorry for her. As at times she seriously does not look comfortable
When she claimed her childhood had been robber. I lost all support for her though
That was utterly insulting. When she has had a privileged upbringing and many suffer globally

I think Wolfie has a serious inferiority complex, he thinks that by insulting certain posters he comes across as a big tough man, in reality he comes across as a foul mouthed little frightened man who would shit himself if confronted in real life. I feel sorry for the man!

For God's sake man, grow up. Or at least ease up on the tinnies of Foster's XXXX for a while.
Your bloody pathetic ranting and foot-stamping makes you worse than a fractious toddler rolling around on the floor and screaming because someone has taken his tube of Smarties away, and your endless "poor ickle me" persecution complex makes you look absolutely bloody infantile and ridiculous, bearing in mind your own proven record of vile language, gratuitous insults, name-calling and mysogyny.

That's actually a fairly common feeling amongst many people. I read an article about how sociologists studied this. They found that people will support ideas that have no merit or chance of making things better, if it irritates those with different political ideologies.
It's not about making things better, but about making the right people upset.

Yeah, I actually was lying. I've seen a lot of people - a LOT - who've said the same thing about Trump.
It's stupid and ugly. But at least I was only lying. And at least she isn't the most powerful person in the world.
Ya know?

That goes a long way to explaining the bullshit you keep peddling on here, if true...
You know quite well that your beloved open market and unregulated 'libertarian' ideals would hurt far more people than they help, while fucking over the environment even more than what it is now..
Yet you still keep on pushing your selfish and unsustainable dogma.

Yeah, but as Didge has pointed out endlessly, she hasn't persuaded any government to change their ways.
Person of the Year doesn't have to be influential so long as he/she is being talked about a lot.

A lot of countries are trying to decrease their use of fossil fuels. There is a limit to what they can do without harming people, and wrecking their economy.
So yes, holding her breath and stomping her feet can't get things done that aren't politically, technologically or economically feasible.
She is making noise, but without viable solutions, that's all it is.

Viable solutions abound! We really have everything we need except for one thing -- we need to band together and put out the kind of effort that we made to defeat the Nazis.
If we tackled global warming the way we handled Hitler, the world would be a lot different 25, 50 years from now.
And we will never fight global warming like we were fighting Nazis if enough people don't stomp their feet, scowl, shout and make some fucking noise about it.

Aviation causes about 2 percent of global CO2 emissions. If we electrified our ground vehicles, went solar and nuke to power our cars and homes, and planted a few hundred million trees, we'd be in much better shape and we could leave the airlines alone -- not that green energy for flights isn't also in the works.

If you had leaky pipes, do you start by fixing the leak that's letting out a gallon per second, or a teaspoon per minute?

Guys, awarding famous people also gives the Times magazine a higher global profile. Mutually beneficial to both donor & recipient of the award.
Just like the nobel peace prize is given to some controversial people. It's done as much for their fame as for true merit.
They hit the 'trending' button on google/fb/weibo etc and give the award to whoever is top of the trending list lol.

Well that’s just hypocritical of her, if you ask me.
Well, it would have been, if it had happened like that. I've found a number of stories that say it wasn't as simple as he's making out.

Did she and her "staff" have first class tickets, yes or no?

"Dear Greta, thanks for supporting us railroaders in the fight against climate change. We were happy that you were traveling with us Saturday in ICE 74," the company said, referring to the route of the high-speed ICE train she was riding. "And that's with 100% sustainable electricity."
"It would have been even nicer," Deutsche Bahn added in a second tweet, "if you had also reported how friendly and competently you were taken care of by our team in your seat in first class."

Thunberg said she didn't intend to suggest there was a problem and that crowded trains were actually a symbol of progress.
"Our train from Basel was taken out of traffic. So we sat on the floor on 2 different trains. After Göttingen I got a seat," she said.
"This is no problem of course and I never said it was."
"Overcrowded trains is a great sign," she added, "because it means the demand for train travel is high!"

Do you think it's possible that she didn't imagine that people would interpret that photo that way?

Oh, come on...this permanently scowling, precocious little kid is being lauded as some new "green" Messiah and it's high time a very close look at who, exactly, is exploiting her and what, precisely, their motives are.
Sixteen years old and travelling the globe at God alone knows what cost with her "staff" of hangers-on including, no doubt a publicist, a dresser, a hair stylist, a speech and drama coach...
Well I for one don't buy it, "Person of the Year" or not.
