First topic message reminder :

I've stated before that I find the word "c-u-n-t" to be offensive, as in the U.S. it's about the worst thing you can call a woman. Others have argued that it's shifted into more polite vernacular in their countries, so I've held off doing anything.

But, as we have a number of female members and they agree on its offensive nature, it's not to be used any more. I would also ask that members refrain from using other certain words that might be used as general insults but that originated as slurs against women, particularly in an ugly sense against female users. Thus, saying that someone is "bitching" about a problem is fine, but calling another member a "bitch" should be avoided.

I have also been asked to ban the word "Nazi."

Huh-boy.

This one I'm torn about, as it has always seemed to me to be a slur against a political ideology (like I've said before) rather than against a person's race, sex, religion or orientation.

HOWEVER. In the spirit of wanting everyone to feel welcome here and not abused, I am also asking that the word "Nazi" only be used in reference to actual Nazis or neo-Nazis. In the same vein, however, I would ask that right-wing users refrain from identifying left-wing users as sympathizing with the genocidal and/or oppressive regimes of Stalin or the Kim dynasty of North Korea. If it is insulting to be identified with Hitler, it is certainly insulting to be identified with Stalin.

Please bear in mind that links that lead to other sites that publish slurs are still allowed, provided their sole purpose is not to abuse.

Also, please bear in mind that the administrative team walks a tightrope. On the one hand, we don't want members to be abused; on the other, we don't want to stifle expression, and sometimes determining the difference between abuse and expression is simply a judgement call and cannot be made simply by referring back to a set of rules.

While nobody's perfect, it will also help if everyone tries to communicate in the spirit of criticizing ideas on their merits, and people on what they say and do, rather than seeking to fight, flame and insult in the first place.

Ultimately, those who rely upon insults seem to be unable to refute the position of the person they disagree with:

He really has become very tetchy. Shady thinks he has been stung by a box jellyfish, but I lean towards the theory that his favourite kangaroo has rebuffed his amorous advances.

It must be terribly difficult living in the outback with the roos, er, less than co-operative and the only dunny 50 kilometers away.

I'm not an expert on what 17th Century America was like, except for a modest dissertation which I wrote many years ago on the possible involvement of English Puritan zealots in the Salem witch trial (and no, I'm elaborating no further because I was "published" on the matter and there are some clever folk in here who could "Google" me up within minutes and would probably reveal my true identity).

To me, "artisans, farmers, horses, smooth-bore muskets and the like" and a simple world doesn't sound all that bad, given the trials and tribulations of the 21st century!

But had they - and our own 17th century counterparts - really not thought for themselves, I would imagine that you would still have been hunting bears and doing nasty things to Native Americans while I would still have been beating my estate workers and exercising droit de seigneur over their daughters.

Times have moved on, Quill. Left-leaning politics either did not exist in those days - or at least were forcibly suppressed to the extent that they were unheard.

Yet we still - in both nations - progressed.

And for the record, I may have voted Tory last time and the time before, but I voted Labour in 1997, so I'm not really all that right wing. I accept, however, that in the eyes of Beekeeper and that curious Catman character, that makes me a goose-stepping n*** who still wishes to invade Poland and exterminate Jews.

Thank you for your concern but the most pathetic insults I receive are from the left, so please do not drag me into childish antics, of which I may not agree with for example Tess and Ncko and if they do say something it is usually in the form of banter of which I do not take personally, I have known them a very long time and have nothing against them. What you fail to understand is that there is an imbalance when it comes to insults, Catman plays the victim constantly yet has been allowed to call Queen a paedo, yet only gay insults count, when both would be wrong, Queen has now left though because this was managed and moderated poorly. Catman has gotten away with telling a cancer sufferer that he hopes their pain hurts, again then refusing to apologise, again nothing done, to then insulting the loss of Me Lord, of which none of these 3 posters are homophobic of which again catman started the issue each time with insults to them, not the other way round.

Whilst there is never a case for any homophobic insults there is never ever a case for his insults, they are vile, as is the poster and many of us have tried to reason and help catman for years, he throws it in our faces and always has done and am sick of him constantly creating 90% of the problems here to the point if anyone disagrees with him, they are then in line for some of the most childish insults. To me you show the same level of moderation to all but catman had been given preferential treatment which is wrong, which will piss people off.
