Foreign Doctors Poor English

Brexit will make the NHS safer for patients by improving poor English skills among foreign staff, one of Britain's top surgeons said last night.

This has been a concern of mine for years now and for others.

It's not so much English skills, it's strong accents which are the problem IMO.

I'm pretty good with accents. Perhaps it's a generational thing anyway. I'd imagine elderly people who've never really met a Russian before, might struggle to understand a Russian doctor who has a strong accent.

I must admit, whenever I meet someone who struggles to understand accents, I think they must not get out much. Or maybe they suffer from hearing loss, that can be part of the problem.

It's not very fair to blame the person having difficulties with an accent rather than the person who can't modify their accent. When people learn English, it depends on where they're from as to what kind of accent they will have, and they need to modify it. Speaking too quickly is another problem - they just need to slow down if they know they have a strong accent.

Well, having never been to the UK, I would naturally be a lot less familiar with British accents than with, say, Mexican, Vietnamese or Pakistani. But I'll take a stab at it -- Yorkshire? Not that I understand one word in two ...

Yes, that even native Brits speak accents that are unintelligible to other English speakers, so it's unfair to complain about da forunuz having dey own aksents too, innit?

I guess the point is... if you work in the public sector, you need to speak slowly and clearly. If you have a heavy accent you need to modify it, even if you're from Wigan.

Even if you're from Wigan, if you can heal the human body, someone somewhere is going to slap a lab coat on you and put you in a doctor's office.

I used to translate for a Jamaican guy when he spoke to my bajun friend. She couldn't understand a word he said!!

Of course it is. Made worse when they are using medical terminology. I ask once for the person to speak clearly, if I still can't understand I ask for a nurse/receptionist to translate

an Arab, Indian, Anglo, Asian or Islander Australian sound more a like than British people that live less than 2 hours drive(200km) away from each other.

Indians and Pakistanis in India and Pakistan are perfectly free to complain about English accents.

well I live amoung all of them, so I get to complain about those that don't speak Aussie or at least American properly Rolling Eyes

and in the Western world if you cant speak understandable American you may as well be speaking Chinese (although in most of the world Chinese is more understandable thasn most English accents)
