Yet another one gone off the planet. What's with 2016 for celeb deaths? Poor lad. He played Chekov in Star Trek.

Re: Anton Yelchin Dead, Crushed by Own Car
Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin has died in a freak car accident at the age of 27.
The body of the Russian-born actor was found at around 1am on his driveway in San Fernadino, California. He had been hit by his own car, police sources told TMZ.
A friend found Yelchin's body pinned between his car and a brick mail box, which was attached to a security gate.
The car was in neutral at the time with the engine still running, with the source adding that the driveway had a steep incline.
The friend had visited the home after growing concerned when Yelchin failed to attend a planned rehearsal earlier in the evening.
Police are still investigating the sudden death, but sources told TMZ that there were not thought to be any suspicious circumstances.
'It appears he momentarily exited his car and it rolled backward, causing trauma that led to his death,' LAPD spokeswoman Jenny Houser told the Hollywood Reporter.
Yelchin's publicist confirmed the sad news, saying in a statement: 'Anton Yelchin was killed in a fatal traffic collision early this morning. His family requests you respect their privacy at this time.'

I never understand how these accidents happen to adults...? Didn't anyone hear him call out?

OMG ...I don't know that he would have been able to, Eddie if his chest area was pinned - he'd not been able to inhale/exhale enough oxygen to do more than moan! OMG - how horrible; he was so young!

On a steep incline and in neutral...?
Did the car wait for him to get behind it before starting to roll...?
Normally a car on a hill and in neutral with no brakes will start rolling straight away...

Was reported to be in neutral...
And on steep incline...
Would have rolled off as soon as he got out of car and took foot off brake...

Says in the news today that the car was a Cherokee Jeep and weighed 2.5 tonnes. It rolled backwards and there was a fault with the Park system. Though why he didn't deploy the handbrake is a mystery.

If it's in neutral and no handbrake on then it would have started rolling as soon as he took his foot off the brake and got out of car... nobody is stupid enough to try to run in front/behind moving car and try to stop it rolling...

I've seen it happen. Sweeper in a truck yard, bent over to sweep some debris in his dust pan, not paying attention, truck backing, angle bar hits on head, dazed falls down, double tires roll over him twixt his legs, and squish guts out of him. Got pictures.
But tommy makes sense. If it was a one-player accident, it must have been an imperceptibly shallow incline.

I looked into what HT was talking about and found these bullet points:
- His 2.5-ton Jeep had pinned him to a brick mailbox
The vehicle was in neutral and engine was still running
Jeep Cherokees that had a confusing gear stick were recalled in April
The gear stick made it easy for drivers to forget the Jeep was in neutral when they got out the car
Blamed for 212 crashes, 308 property damage claims and 41 injuries

But if he got out of car on steep incline as claimed, then it would have immediately started rolling and he would have been by the side of where car was as it rolled off!
He would have watched it roll off... not been in the path of it rolling down incline.

Grade of incline + weight of vehicle + gravity + whether the idle was a rough idle or smooth; you haven't any information about the noise level around his home - if he was on his phone - had some music going on with ear buds on his head - it caught his head & chest area so he was probably bent down looking at something at his security gate with his back turned to his JEEP
Just far to many WHAT-IF'S into this hypothetical horrid accident for you to make any conjectures about him 'watching it roll off' and as all of the 'RECALL' issues have been about that specific model ...the gear will POP out of PARK and drop down into neutral then gravity would pull it into motion!

Re: Anton Yelchin Dead, Crushed by Own Car
Incline steep.
Vehicle weight 2.5 tons.
Gravity standard.
This is what happens when you get out of a car on a steep incline when in neutral and take your foot off brake...

Yeah, that's what I mean. How steep is the incline in this case?
Cause he would have needed help if it was too steep. I think you've got a good point.

It starts gradually, doesn't it. So he might have gotten a distance before he realized...and too late, bam!
It will be for the engineers and accident reconstructionist to figure out. I assume that's what the camera is there for.

Not if as the 'RECALL' failure was doing - popping out of the PARK position and sliding down into neutral ...he could have been well down by the metal gate by that time!Tommy Monk wrote:May start gradually... but would start as soon as he got out to the side and he would have seen it moving straight away...
Your theory of him being beside the vehicle makes zero since to the way that he was found; trapped between the vehicle and the post & gate!
Good Grief, your YOUTUBE isn't even the right vehicle - isn't even the right country and how the hell do consider that a viable connection ---

Re: Anton Yelchin Dead, Crushed by Own Car
The recall issue was not one of popping out of park into neutral... it was one of leaving in neutral while thinking it was in Park...
So in neutral and on an incline it would start to roll away as soon as foot was taken off brake...

And on all of the talking head/media coverage that I've watched for 2 days - they've showed where the gear shift will be put into the 'P' {park} position but if you didn't set the hand/emergency brake the gear shift 'POPPED' out and the vehicle was now in neutral position and could roll freely!
Their words not mine ...but at least my news media had the actual type/style and year of the vehicle --- you've got something from Europe, a car, low to the ground and not even close to the same body type/weight or year - CAR vs Jeep SUV totally different! GOOD GRIEF,The Jeep SUV that crushed "Star Trek" actor Anton Yelchin this weekend had been flagged by the automaker for a problem that could cause the vehicle to roll away.
Yelchin's Jeep rolled down his driveway and pinned him to a brick post in front of his Los Angeles home, according to law enforcement.
Los Angeles police said Monday, "The investigation is ongoing so we have not made any final determination as to the cause of the accident."
Fiat Chrysler (FCAM) filed a recall notice in April with federal safety regulators for the 2015 Grand Cherokee, the model Yelchin owned, along with 1.1 million cars and SUVs in April. More than 100 crashes have been reported due to a gear selector problem that caused confusion about whether the car was in park.
Car owners haven't gotten an official recall notice yet, but they did receive a notice warning about the problem in May. It advised drivers to double check that the car is in park, and that the parking brake is on before exiting. Fiat Chrysler has to wait for replacement parts to become available before it can start repairs, according to its filing with safety regulators. At that point it will send a recall notice telling owners to bring the car in for free repairs.
Fiat Chrysler said it it will conduct a thorough investigation of the accident that killed Yelchin, but that it is too soon to say whether the gear problem was cause at the accident.

Perhaps it was parked on the bridge at the top of the incline and took a few moments to gradually get going and pick up speed. My car has a electronic handbrake and an auto hold so perhaps he just forgot to engage it. I've done that when I've stopped the car but luckily I was still in it.

Brake problems with the Jeep Chorokee..
Tl-the contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while in park, the vehicle rolled down a hill independently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic test but there was no repair or diagnosis. The contact stated that the failure recurred multiple times. Also, the contact mentioned that prior to the brake failure the four wheel drive also failed which caused the vehicle to slide. The contact stated that the dealer was unable to provide a diagnosis. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 15,000. .

It is only in your words at top of your post that the claim of 'popping out of park into neutral' is made...
Where everywhere else it is clearly stated that neutral is selected but mistaken for being in Park.
So really in neutral all along... and will start rolling immediaely after foot brake is released... which will undoubtedly be starting to happen when this man got out of car...
Dictated by physics and gravity...
These factors don't wait for someone to stroll down a hill first before starting to happen...

That is what I'm thinking. Tommy, you say:
Tommy wrote: but would start as soon as he got out to the side and he would have seen it moving straight away
I don't think he would have noticed it creeping. When it got to the steep part of the incline, yes...but in those initial seconds before the vehicle picked up speed, he could easily gotten behind the vehicle without noticing the movement.

Actually there was a demonstration of the defect on the Today Show on NBC this morning. It showed the lever snapping out of 'park', thus putting the vehicle in neutral. It clearly shows the driver pushing the lever into 'park', and the vehicle seemingly on its own volition, snapping back into neutral. Saw it with my own eyes.

Re: Anton Yelchin Dead, Crushed by Own Car
It was already reported to already be on a steep incline... the picture was not the position of where car was when it started rolling... and if it had started rolling from the highest point then it would have been going at much higher speed to have caused much more damage to gates!!!
And I'm not convinced that the pic is even free from tampering... as I have suggested to HT on another thread...
The drive looks altered behind tripod legs... raised up all along that whole area... plus gates look wrong... and behind gates look wrong too...

It is an established product defect. Chrysler has the vehicle on recall for it's habit of jumping out of 'park'.

the backgrounds in both photos beyond the gates are different. So yes, the one with the tripod has been altered. Not sure why though.

Actually, on closer inspection I think that beige background is a garage or perhaps another house. So, I'm thinking that the perspective of the two photos just make it look different. Or perhaps one photo is older than the other.

"...The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee that rolled backward down a driveway and killed the actor Anton Yelchin early Sunday was a model that Fiat Chrysler has recalled for a gearshift issue that has confused drivers, leading them to accidentally leave the car in neutral when they think it is safely in park..."
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/21/business/jeep-that-crushed-anton-yelchin-had-been-recalled.html
Also I think the pic I posted and the pic HT posted have been altered... and the last pic too has gate issues...
The car has already been reported to have been on a steep incline... and I have shown what happens when a car is on a steep incline in neutral and driver gets out taking foot off brake when exiting car.
The speed of roll off will vary depending on steepness of incline and weight of car... but principle remains the same...
