Fatcat bosses who ration NHS drugs have blown thousands of taxpayers' cash on champagne and five-star hotels, it emerged last night.

National Institute for Clinical Excellence managers - who have come under fire for denying life-saving medicines on cost grounds - spent £115,000 on taxpayer-funded credit cards over two-and-a-half years.

The spree is reported to have included £5,000 on luxury hotels and £3,346 at the Searcys chain of champagne bars in London.

Drawn from the NHS's £109 billion budget, the cash is from the same pot for treatments and medics.

The revelations came as NICE's chief executive said drugs combating illnesses such as flu may not be approved for NHS use.

Critics say the elderly could be put at risk.
