It seems the gun lobby arent the only ones to employ dirty tricks
When the Obama administration smuggled weapons to Mexican drug dealers in order to then trace them back to criminals and bust drug gangs in 2011, it became known as Operation Fast and Furious. Later that year, CBS News found documentation that proved ATF agents discussing how these guns were passed to Mexican gun dealers based in the U.S. The idea behind doing this was when these guns were used to commit crimes, it would justify passing stricter gun laws in America.

Isn't school kids getting shot up isn't justification for passing tougher gun laws already

Having been a lawyer and law enforcement officer in Arizona (AAG) at the time, I know something about this program, variously called the "ATF Gunwalking scandal' or "Fast and Furious."
It was an ATF sting, which started out as a reverse laundering operation, to get guns into Central America to fight the bad guys. Then in morphed into the tracing of guns that would make it back into the US as illegals.
The entire program was commenced and run by Republican adiministrations. It started with Bush Sr. and continued with GWB, ending in 2006. The court cases extended into 2012.
The program had shit to do with passing gun legislation in the US. That is one of the wild fantasies put out by the NRA...ATF wouldn't even know how to engineer legislation.
If you want a conspiracy, the place to look is what they are not talking about. Look at the early 1980s, when the program started out with the CIA shipping guns from Wright Patterson AFB, through a small airport in Mena, AK, on down to Ilpongo AFB in covert C-124s, for distribution over land into Nicaragua. That was the real, and original purpose of the program. Check old copies of the San Jose Mercury News, circa 1982-83, for brief releases of the story to the public. The reporter lost his job after the CIA visited his employers.

These operations were done under the umbrella of Project Gunrunner, a project intended to stem the flow of firearms into Mexico by interdicting straw purchasers and gun traffickers within the United States
