David Cameron accused of smears, bribes and lies in dirty tricks election campaign
David Cameron has been accused of trying to “buy and lie” his way back into Downing Street.
The charge came after the PM showered taxpayers’ cash on Tory and Lib Dem seats ahead of the general election on May 7 and unleashed a series of “grubby” adverts attacking Labour leader Ed Miliband.
A Labour source said: “Voters won’t swallow this transparent attempt to buy and lie their way to clinging on to power.”
The Tories have already used doctored images to portray Mr Miliband as fat and gormless and made baseless claims about him planning a coalition with Sinn Fein.
It follows a series of earlier fibs, including claims Labour backed the privatisation of Royal Mail and boasts that NHS spending was soaring under the Tory-led Coalition.
George Osborne also released a dossier claiming Labour had made £20.7billion of uncosted spending commitments for 2015-16.
It was exposed as a sham based on selective comments and invented policies.
Mr Miliband has appealed to the Tories not to fight dirty as many of his rivals were in politics for “the right reasons”.
