Election TV debate: David Cameron wins, says snap poll
Prime Minister performed better in television grilling according 54 per cent of voters, while 46 per cent give it to Ed Miliband.
Ed Miliband struggled under questions about his strength of character and his immigration policies as a snap poll declared David Cameron the winner of the first televised election contest.
The Labour leader battled to answer questions about how many immigrants he thinks should be allowed to come to Britain, his spending plans and his record on the economy, as well as his relationship with his brother.
Mr Miliband repeatedly refused to set a target for the number of foreigners he thinks should be allowed to come to the UK, saying he would not “pluck a figure out of the air”.
David Cameron also struggled during his initial exchanges with Jeremy Paxman as he was accused of a series of broken promises over immigration, poverty and surrounding himself with “rich people”.
However, an ICM polllate last night said that 54 per cent of viewers believed the Tory leader had won the contest.
Mr Paxman, emerging from retirement to question the party leaders, reminded viewers of his bruising power as an interviewer when he accused Mr Miliband of being a “north London geek” who is too weak to run the country.
A glowering Mr Miliband endured laughter from the audience and Mr Paxman was heard to ask him as the programme ended: “Are you ok, Ed?”
The format of the debate appeared to hamper the Prime Minister, who was made to go first against Mr Paxman, giving Mr Miliband time to plan his own responses to the former Newsnight presenter.
Mr Miliband also apologised for the last Labour government’s spending record, citing the Millennium Dome as an example.
When asked if he has what it takes to lead the country, Mr Miliband insisted “hell yes I’m tough enough” to become prime minister. He cited his opposition to President Barack Obama ambition to go to war in Syria.
He insisted that he has been “underestimated at every turn” and is “no pacifist”. Personal criticism was like “water off a duck’s back”, he said.

I keep saying Labour are their own worse enemies, being as they have Miliband as their leader who will cost them the election. Which in reality they should be far ahead of the Tories in the Polls, but this is juts not the case and as I have said before he is not a very good speaker. He just does not have a strong enough character and why if Labour want to do well they need to act and choose a stronger leader instead. Which I am glad they have not as keeping Miliband at their head, will ensure Labour will not win.

Can not understand why people want to vote for Labour after the last lot made such an unholy mess of this country. It seems people have very short memories.

cant think why people would want to vote conservative after Major f*cked up so badly Blair won by an landslide.
short memories work for both sides of the political spectrum, it seems.

He was far more human, and impressive, even with Kate Burnley doing her best to make everything personal.

Look at the ICM flash tracker tables to see that Miliband ripped Cameron on the issues that really mattered. Cameron won his part of the debate by a slim margin based on presentation but there again he spins like no one else can and he's like a used car salesman
There was better news for Ed Miliband when it came to the crucial question of whether people would shift their votes: 56% of the respondents who said they might change their mind plumped for Labour, as against just 30% for the Conservatives.

Hell yeah
UPDATE: ICM tables are now up here (thanks to that fine man Tom Clark!). As expected, perceptions of who won fell pretty much along the lines of pre-existing party support – 84% of Conservatives thought Cameron won, 74% of Labour supporters thought Miliband won, Lib Dems were split, Ukippers thought Cameron won, Greens thought Miliband won. Note that while the sample was demographically and politically weighted to be nationally representative, it was a very heavily Labour sample in terms of current voting intention: the pre-debate voting intentions of the sample had an 10% Labour lead (thus are the difficulties of doing things like this – people who watch programmes like this are different from your average voter!)

So funny how some of the left are so easily taken in.
