Oregon Family Files Discrimination Lawsuit After Being Removed From United Airlines Flight Over Autistic Daughter
First topic message reminder :
A Oregon family are filing a discrimination lawsuit after being kicked off a United Airlines plane because the pilot refused to fly with their autistic daughter on board.
After returning home to Portland after a family holiday to DisneyWorld in Orlando on Tuesday, Dr Donna Beegle was escorted off the plane along with her husband and their 15-year-old daughter Juliette and her brother.
Dr Beegle said the family was about an hour into their flight when she noticed a tell-tale sign from her daughter that her behaviour was about to change. She had refused to eat her packed lunch, so the family asked if they could purchase a hot meal from the first-class menu to calm her down.

From a practical point of view, I assume that pilots can come out and talk to passengers? I don't fly much myself tbh.
Anyway, so the best thing would have been for the pilot to have come and talked to the lady and seen for himself that the girl had calmed down.

Well that's because you would have been doing it from personal anger. I understand that, but I'm trying to look at both sides.
Fine, but that's because you have a personal interest. The pilot had an interest in not having disruption on the flight. I'm not saying that they should have been removed - I've said that several times, but all this slating of the crew is getting on my nerves a bit. The woman does sound a bit up herself tbh.
If you yelled at me and got angry because your child is disabled, I wouldn't put up with that actually.

No raggs i don`t think sometimes being "arsy " is the only way things get done or fixedRaggamuffin wrote:korban dallas wrote:

Sort of, yes. Her tone was a bit belligerent, and that could be seen as disruptive also. It's just best not to get arsy with staff, don't you think?
i have been polite i have been conciliatory but in the end got nowhere and out comes the demon and low and behold things get done unfortunate but true

Oh really? Being arsy might get you your own way sometimes - generally because staff just want to get rid of you. However, you will get a far better result by being nice.

I'm not saying she yelled - you said that you would angry, and I replied. If you yelled at me to get your own way, you would be in the wrong, and I would not put up with it. That goes for anyone - no exceptions.

A lot of people get abusive because they think the staff will give in to get rid of them. That does sometimes work, but other times they might put their foot down - it's a bit of a gamble really.
Being firm and stating your case is not the same thing. Being abusive and yelling at staff may well get you chucked out of a place if you're not careful, regardless of who's right and who's wrong.

I don't know. It doesn't seem that she had medical needs as such - she's just a picky eater - won't eat anything that isn't hot apparently.

The family ate dinner in Houston, Beegle said, but Juliette refused to eat. Beegle brought some snacks on board for her because "if her blood sugar lets go, she gets frustrated and antsy. We try to anticipate that and prevent that."

Look, I know we're speaking generally now, but I really dislike your kind of attitude - shout at someone, and if they don't like it, you'll go further up. Staff are people, like you, so quit your posturing.

Oh FFS, the girl's mother said herself that the issue was that the girl wouldn't eat food which wasn't hot. She also said it hadn't been an issue on other flights - presumably because the girl didn't need to eat anything. That's not an ongoing medical need. If she had an ongoing medical need, her mother would have informed the staff before she got on the friggin plane.

What I mean is that one minute you're saying that the girl must have medical needs, and now you appear to be implying that she didn't have enough medical needs for her mother to inform the airline.

I'm not disputing what's been said about that.
Can you find a link to show that Donna Beegle told the airline in advance that her daughter was disabled and needed special treatment?

Well do you think that Donna Beegle did inform the airline then? If she didn't, then clearly she didn't consider that the girl was disabled enough to do so.
That link is about European airlines by the way.

Like I said, she would have mentioned it. She's been talking about the incident on her Facebook page, and nowhere does she say that she informed the airline. Now perhaps I missed something, so feel free to look for yourself.
I would say that if she did, she would have checked out the scenario re hot food, knowing that her daughter was a picky eater, and clearly she didn't do that.

If they did specify the medical needs of the child and they were still sold tickets I would imagine the airline will be in some trouble regarding the law suit, I am not sure if it could or would fall under extra rules regarding difficult or dangerous passengers during flights.

Thank you. It doesn't say people have to inform them, it just advises them to do so. That particular airline requires certain periods of notice for certain situations re wheelchairs, etc, and also for special meals. I would say that a requirement for a hot meal would require that notice if they were not in first class.
