Re: GE15 - results here!!
They're saying that the Tories are heading for an overall majority. Bad news for foxes, hares, and stags then.
Did the speculation re a Labour/SNP deal put people off voting for Labour in England?

Re: GE15 - results here!!
Well I did say the best weapon the Tories had was Ed Miliband, as he clearly is not that popular. Plus I think the fear of Labour going in to coalition with Labour, even though they said they would not, clearly played on peoples minds.

You mean going in with the SNP?
It doesn't look like Labour has actually lost seats in England - apart from maybe a few, they just didn't win ones they thought they would. There is speculation that it's because of the possibility of a Labour/SNP coalition, and of course people in England would not want that. It might be nothing to do with that of course.
At a glance, it seems that Labour lost a huge number of seats to the SNP, and the Tories gained a lot from the LibDems, particularly in the South West.

Re: GE15 - results here!!
I reckon the racist snp have cost labour dearly.
Ukip have also had quite an affect on the overall outcome.
perhaps the half of the country who have realised voting is pointless as the colour of the rosette may change but the crap its pinned to doesn't have it right.

True Rags, but losing the amount of seats in Scotland is a disater for them. They were hoping to gain seats in England as well as their support in Scotland. That loss now makes it an up hill struggle for labour come the next elections if they fail to regain their support up there. It is a huge amount of seats that if lost on a permenant bases. Lots of what if's I know, but this is a real hammer blow to Labour.

Re: GE15 - results here!!
I think the results of any general election rest largely on the personalities of the party leaders. I think that's why Labour had that landslide in 1997 - because of Tony Blair - and I think people in Scotland have voted for the SNP largely because of the personality of Nicola Sturgeon.

Agreed, as much as he is now hated, at the time, he was very popular and his charisma played a huge part. That is why I say and have been saying for sometime, the best weapon the Tories had was Miliband as leader. They would have done far better with his brother. You know a party is not going to do well, if their leader is less popular than the present PM.

The loss of seats in Scotland is a disaster for Labour - I agree, but I think the loss of seats in Scotland was fairly predictable. The referendum results were very close really, and it probably spurred a lot of people on to vote for the SNP. Also, as I just said, I think the personality of Nicola Sturgeon played a large part in it.
The main issue is why Labour did not do better in England, and why the LibDems lost so many seats.

I absolutely agree about Tony Blair. He was a very refreshing change at the time, and he had charisma. Unfortunately, the invasion of Iraq led to a loss of support IMO.
Miliband is OK as a leader, but he would have needed a huge amount of charisma and confidence to beat the Tories.

I think David has more charisma, but agree that I doubt it would have been enough.
Well its done now I guess, all there is left to see is who gets the last seats. Tories now on 320 with 15 to go.

I am happy for that and so should the UKIP supporters as they will now have their chance to vote with a referendum on the EU.
It shows even though they had near 4 million votes at nearly 13% of the vote, they clearly have stronghold areas of support and not wide spread support.
Be interesting the next 5 years now how things pan out, but I bet you see the FTSE rise today after the Tory win.

I don't really have a problem with the Tories, apart from one issue, and that is hunting with dogs. I guess a lot of people would say it's a trivial issue in the general scheme of things, but I have a thing about it.
The usual issue will come up again - the fairness/unfairness of the voting system. A party can get a large percentage of the popular vote and yet come out with very few seats. The popular vote breakdown will be interesting.
Poor LibDems eh? They are pretty much back to square one.

You think that's bad? In the U.S., a president can get fewer votes than his (always his, at least till next year) opponent and still end up in the White House. It hasn't happened often, but it got Bush in.

Probably true -- I haven't looked in on the UK election since earlier yesterday (why do I stay up so late?) but it looked like kind of a mess, like maybe the Tories are going to have to bend quite a bit to create a coalition. Your take?

The Tories are expected to get an overall majority, so there will be no need for a coalition like in the last election. There's only a few seats to go.

So what on earth happened to the LibDems? They've done worse than they ever did. Did some floating voters object to them having a say in Government as part of the coalition?

So much for Tommy Monk's prediction of 25% and about 10 seats for UKIP.

No. He'll still be the leader of UKIP, and they still do very well in the Euro elections.

Unless he's a Lord without telling us, I don't think it's him. Lord Ashbury? Ashington? Ash-on-the-Thames? Aniston? I can't remember ...

Miliband may well resign as well.
I always think it's a shame for the people who voted for leaders when they resign. It's as if they're saying those people didn't count.
