When gin was full of sulphuric acid and turpentine
t's 250 years since the death of William Hogarth. His famous work Gin Lane still informs the way people think about the drink.
It's arguably the most potent anti-drug poster ever conceived. A woman, her clothes in disarray, her head thrown back in intoxicated oblivion, allows her baby to slip from her grasp, surely to its death in a stairwell below.
She's the centrepiece in an eye-wateringly grim urban melee - full of death, misery, starvation and fighting.
The year was 1751. The drug in question was gin. And the engraving was a conscious effort by William Hogarth, along with his friend novelist Henry Fielding, to force the government to do something about a drink that was threatening to tear apart the social fabric of England.
The craze had started with changes in the laws at the end of 17th Century aimed at curbing consumption of French brandy by liberalising the distilling industry.

Re: When gin was full of sulphuric acid and turpentine
And the govt of the day reveled in it....
they even allowed people to be paid in drink, and allowed the millowners to pay them in vouchers that could ONLY be spent in the "company shop"
finally the "corn laws" were brought in whereby folks had to be paid in "coin of the realm" at least weekly
it took another conservative to remove that right and force everyone to be paid via a bank. withn its associated extra costs and problems....

Re: When gin was full of sulphuric acid and turpentine
gin during Victorian times was cheaper than food at some points...it filled you up and kept you warm and then killed you young with the additions mentioned in OP.
^Victor - agree with mill owners but look at port sunlight (I think or something similar) whereby there were loads of clubs, activities, reading rooms etc...but no puns and no drink in the company shop so it was another extreme - but this one was considered "good" cause it kept them away from the demon drink.

IF those Juniper berries (of 'Life of Brian' fame..) were meant for drinking, they would come with handles and straws already attached...
IF you good peeps want a real 'pick me up' forget the Gin, Vodka (potatoes) or Brandy (distilled wine) ~ you can't go past a "double Bundy and Coke in a Schooner glass" :
My juniper bush grows in a cut glass bucket, the berries are gently squeezed through a covering of fish net tights and Waitrose ( Coles in down under ) supply a direct pipe of tonic as hydration. Only woozes drink through straws.

I make sure to keep myself in bourbon, Irish whisky, tequila and Cognac ...
But the Cognac always runs out first. I got my bottle of Courvoisier right here!

Don't really have that one, but something kind of similar was a fad for bars to be named things like "The Library" or "The Office." Ah, drunks-lying-to-their-wives humor ...

Plus Many 'Churches' are now pubs as most of the congregations have closed or dramatically shrunk and can no longer afford them as they a large nice Sandstone buildings, most actual church services are held in industrial lots and simply converted warehouses. I hate the smell of coffee and the taste is horrible.
The number of meetings that I have been at where they only provided coffee and no tea must run into hundreds and me asking rather meekly 'can I have tea please?' lol

True enough Quill and the quality is usually very poor. It's just not the same as drinking your tea out of your own mug at home.
