Nigel Farage fails to attend Croydon rally as Ukip carnival erupts
Party leader stays away from election rally after arguments break out in street and candidate describes town as a dump
Nigel Farage has failed to turn up to his mini street carnival in Croydon after rows broke out in the street over whether his party was racist and one of his local candidates described the town as an unsafe dump.
The event quickly turned into a farce as two members of a hired steel band said they were uncomfortable about playing at the event. Marlon Hibbert, whose parents are Jamaican, said he thought Ukip was racist and he had had no idea it was Farage's party that made the booking.
Crowds gathered around Ukip supporters, including one of the party's most prominent black activists Winston McKenzie, a Croydon council candidate, who used a megaphone to say he was proud to back the party. But he was interrupted by two Romanian protesters, who declined to give their names, accusing Ukip of being a Nazi party. He was also confronted by resident Anthony St Croix, who demanded to know why a Ukip candidate had talked about sending Lenny Henry back to a "black country".
As McKenzie was mobbed by the media, arguments began to break out between supporters and passers-by over whether Ukip's policies and its supporters public comments discriminated against immigrants.
After an hour, it became clear Farage was unlikely to attend, with one aide attributing his non-appearance to security concerns.
Asked whether Farage was frightened of attending, McKenzie, who is standing in Croydon North, said: "If he hasn't turned up he is a very sensible man. It just shows how successive governments have continued to fail communities like Croydon.
"Croydon, which was once the place to be, the place to shop, has now become, sadly, a dump … How can you ask an international leader to turn up somewhere where he feels unsafe?"
He later added: "It would seem Nigel has probably decided not to come down here today. When you weigh up the situation, this a very sensible man. Croydon has deteriorated over the years under successive Labour and Tory governments and now we have a coalition where it has descended into depravity … It wouldn't feel safe."

There was nothing to attend! It had to be abandoned due to the nazi-like tactics of the left wing rabble. Imagine if it were a Labour Party meeting and the EDL/BNP had behaved in this way. I can just imagine the outrage on here!!
A UKIP carnival descended into chaos this afternoon after party candidates clashed with protestors and a pre-booked steel band refused to play at the event.
Mr McKenzie, a former amateur boxing champion and one of Ukip's most high profile black members, clashed with black teenagers in a debate over whether he was a leader of the community while also being in the party. A steel band, Endurance Steel, which had been hired to play, walked out amid reports that they had not been told they would be playing for Ukip.

Never laughed so much at such a poor article from the Express, where now Romanians protested at being demonized, yes you are right about Nazism with UKIP and how people refused to play for what they constitute as nothing short or a repeat of barbarism to this nation that people once thought died off centuries ago.
I love how they word everything, clashed in a debate, wow were the words so heated this now constitutes a riot?

UKIP leader Nigel Farage has pulled out of a musical carnival organised by his party after supporters clashed with protesters in the street.
A steel band hired for the event in Croydon, south London, refused to continue playing when told they had been hired on behalf of UKIP.
Romanians carrying banners argued with party activists over Mr Farage's recent comments about their fellow countrymen.
UKIP's Winston McKenzie said Mr Farage had withdrawn for security reasons.
The anti-EU party had promised to bring a "strong and positive message" to the streets of Croydon, with a "bold and vibrant" carnival-style campaign event.
'Diminished'
The steel band Endurance Steel played as the protesters gathered, with one Romanian woman holding a banner accusing UKIP of "racism" after Mr Farage said last week that people would not feel comfortable if a group of Romanian men moved next door.
Arguments followed between Mr McKenzie, a candidate in Thursday's council elections in Croydon, and the demonstrators.
Mr McKenzie told the BBC: "They've diminished the meaning of racism... They've taken away the meaning of racism, which is a very potent subject."
When informed that UKIP was holding the event, Endurance Steel withdrew their services and packed up their instruments, saying they had not been told previously.
After about an hour of confusion, Mr McKenzie confirmed that Mr Farage would not attend, telling reporters: "He's a responsible family man and political party leader. Certain situations you have to avoid."
He added: "Croydon is unsafe and a dump."
After the rally broke up, a small number of UKIP activists continued to hand out leaflets to passing shoppers amid calmer scenes.
A Croydon party member, who would not give his name, said while he was disappointed not to meet Mr Farage, his decision not to attend was understandable.
He said: "He's one of the hardest working politicians in the country.
"The event has been frustrating. You expect a bit of barracking but this was not helpful."

Yes it looks dreadful, people in disagreement, the horror.

Hi Nicko
i think the opposite will happen as people start to wake up to the real views of UKIP.
They will get the protest vote this week, that is all, and have even noticed this week a dip in their polling for both the EU elections and general elections, The tide is beginning to turn and this is not about demonizing, but exposing some home truths

There is no need to smear UKIP, they do it all by themselves.

UKIP are champions as smearing themselves. Nobody else has to lift a finger.
