Watch: Muslims show they're "Happy" to counter negative media portrayals

A Muslim blog's joyful "Happy" video is going viral.

If you've not heard Pharrell's "Happy", then congratulations on your impressive isolation from popular culture. It's a massive song, arguably the song of summer 2013 and still popular enough to be a challenger for the song of summer 2014. Its video - with a bunch of happy people dancing and clapping in different locations around LA - is really easy to copy, so there are loads of tributes and parodies on YouTube (like this one, or this one, or this one).

The big viral hit on Twitter right now is the version done by Muslim blog The Honesty Policy, which features all kinds of Muslims jumping and dancing and clapping and generally being (you guessed it) happy. It's managed more than a quarter of a million hits in less than two days, and does a great job of showing that Muslims - contrary to how they're commonly portrayed in the media - are actually human, and quite enjoy enjoying themelsves. Who'd have thunk it?

In the words of the Honesty Policy:

To any youngster aspiring to be someone, this proves that our community is ready to mobilise together under a simple good intention. Despite our team remaining anonymous, which was REALLY shady, they put their trust in an intention. We have scholars, activists, celebrities, students, professionals, bloggers and everyday’ers all in one video. It is amazing how times have changed, and we really hope this project inspires others to pick up the mantle and showcase our community for the smiling wondrous people they are. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Of course a lot of blood, sweat and tears went into this, but watching the faces of those who watch it brighten up makes it all worth it.

We Brits have a bad rep for being a bit stiff, but this video proves otherwise. We are HAPPY. We are eclectic. We are cosmopolitan. Diverse. Creative. Fun. Outgoing. And everything you can think of.

This video is to show the world despite the negative press, stereotypes and discrimination we are burdened with we should respond with smiles and joy, not anger.

Depressingly, and unsurprisingly, there are a bunch of killjoys who think it's all a bit much, and that "proper" Muslims shouldn't be so silly and unserious. They can be found on Twitter, but we won't be linking to them here. We will, however, point out that Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad - the dean of the Cambridge Muslim College and an extremely influential academic of Islam (he's the red-headed guy at 0:41) - hasn't, contrary to the Shaam Post's "exclusive", said that he regrets appearing in it. He's issued a statement through The Honesty Policy saying: "I'm delighted to see the outcome of the Happy British Muslims video, which has unlocked a remarkable tide of goodwill around the world, and significantly tilted the image of Muslims among many sceptics. Islamophobes must be grinding their teeth to see Muslims of different races and age-groups united by happiness. No-one will produce a Sharia argument against jumping for joy!"

We haven't heard from Pharrell about what he thinks, but he cried with joy on Oprah after watching some fan-made videos, so it's probably a good guess that he'd approve.

Well, I've never known a Muslim yet who didn't sing and dance. The ones who think it is wrong are fundamentalists in the tiniest minority. Living with a Muslim family in Tunisia, they did nothing but sing and dance. The largest proportion of Muslims are in Indonesia and they are famous for their dances.

In fact, out in Tunisia I got taught some arabic dancing, fun it was.

While the primary target of these groups has been Tunisian nationals and businesses serving and selling alcohol outside the main tourist areas, this behaviour could affect foreigners.

Travelled all over Tunisia by myself, not in the tourist areas, lived with the family I knew in Kairouan and Lotfi the son of the family then travelled with me to Tunis.   Was never treated with anything but respect and had a fantastic time. If my daughter hadn't have been so ill, would have carried on living out there.

And unfortunately the wonderful video showing young English people dancing has come under attack from the older Muslims - even the BBC Asian Network gave them a voice (god knows why) - well, they would, wouldn't they?

The group admits it expected "a backlash" from some quarters, but the feel-good project seems to have struck a chord with the majority of the 300,000 viewers so far on YouTube, with Tweets and Facebook messages of support from celebrities, MPs and the wider public.

That hasn't stopped a vocal minority attacking the project as haram (an Arabic term meaning sinful), though, and yesterday the BBC Asian Network held a vigorous debate asking whether the video was halal (an action that is permissible to engage in).

One high-profile contributor to the video is Timothy Winter (he's the chap pictured above holding an "I'm happy" sign), who in the Muslim community is more commonly known as Sheikh Abdul-Hakim Murad. He's one of country's foremost Muslim theologians and lectures at Cambridge University.

Within days of the video first appearing online, a post appeared on Muslim news website Shaam Post claiming that the academic had distanced himself from the video and labelled it improper.

Sassy, a few thoughts on the thread - it's a little sad that to prove a point they got a few young Muslims to smile and dance, and it hasn't exactly been well received.

Second - I've been looking at a whole host of sites after asking the question - "is dancing and singing ok in Islam" - it doesn't look good to be honest.

One example:

This was the aqeedah of the Sahabas and of the people following Sahabas. Daff is the only instrument allowed, but it has some limitations. It should be simple daff, not those with metallic plates attached to them. Daff is only to be used under certain conditions, and it is allowed only for women, not for men. It is allowed during Eid days, wedding days and during wars. In very simple manner, without exaggeration and damaging the hudoods. Allaah says in Chapter Luqmaan (interpretation of the meaning): “And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing) to mislead (men) from the path of Allaah…” [Luqmaan 31:6] The scholar of the ummah, Ibn ‘Abbaas (Radi'Allaahu Anhu) said: this means singing. Mujaahid (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: this means playing the drum (tabl). (Tafseer al-Tabari,21/40). Not that Ibn Abbas Radi'Allaahu Anhu was a sahaabi, a student of Prophet {Sallallaahu-Alaiyhi-WaSallam}. He understood what was right. Allaah {S.w.t} says (interpretation of the meaning): “[Allaah {S.w.t} said to Iblees:] And befool them gradually those whom you can among them with yourvoice (i.e. songs, music, and any other call for Allaah’s disobedience)…” [al-Israa’ 17:64] It was narrated that Mujaahid (May Allaah have mercy on him) said: “And befool them gradually those whom you can among them with your voice” – his voice [the voice of Iblees/ Shaytaan] is singing and falsehood. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “Do you then wonder at this recitation (the Qur’aan)? And you laugh at it and weep not, Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)” [al-Najm 53:59-61] Ibn Abbas {Radi'Allaahu-Anhu} said regarding this verse that: “Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements means “singing”, Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (Radi'Allaahu Anhu) narrated that Apostle of Allaah (S.a.w) said: Singing produces hypocrisy in the heart (Sunan Abu Dawud, Book No. 41, Hadith No. 4909 )

The video shows real Muslims having proper fun same as most people do. Certainly when I was in Egypt there was plenty of dancing and music and singing

My OH is a Scot. Say I started a forum and there was thread after thread being really vile and racially abusive about Scots. Out of respect for him I'd stop it. Sorry, but I consider by allowing the continuous filth about Muslims that Dean allows he is showing his wife absolutely no respect at all. If his wife were English and the threads were speaking about the English the same way, I'd say the same thing. It's not just one or two threads, it's continuous.
