Grand National NewsFix Draw
First topic message reminder :
The Grand National is this Saturday and members here can enter by picking a number between 1 to 44 and you will be allocated the horse with that number. The numbers for each horse has been made up at random and to avoid any cheating the list of runners with the numbers has been lodged with the moderators.
It’s just a bit of fun and there will be a mystery prize for the member who picks the winner.
So make your choice

Will it be replaced? And should Les be assigned the replacement?

If the horse itself is still running I'm still having that horse- my faith in Monbeg Dude is now unshakeable (plus I'll probably get better odds now haha)

Looking hopeful that he (Paul Carberry) will ride in the national tomorrow - discharged from hospital all xrays etc clear so will just have to pass the course medical doctor tomorrow morning.

Been too many serious injuries to jockeys in the past 12 months - including paralysed JT Mcnamara. I mean Ruby Walsh is out with the injuries from the fall at Cheltenham, and Daryl Jacob getting thrown even before the race.
There were 4 jockeys injured in that one race today - 2 treated on course and Paul in hospital should all race tomorrow but Mikey Fogarty who was down for Vesper Bell has 2 fractured thoracic vertebrae and will be out for a while.

Actually it was better than usual Sassy. Although there were a lot of fallers there weren't any serious injuries, and no fatalities - for once.Sassy wrote:He fell, I only watched for a couple on minutes, there were too many fallers, I don't like that.
I loved the winner, an older horse with a jockey who came out of retirement, owned and trained by a GP with only a few horses. Well done the underdog!

Very true Tess, a feel good winner, at least it would make me feel good if I hadn't lost money on both my horses pffft

I just heard Tess that no-one was hurt badly, thank goodness for that.
Les, I agree about the winner, can see them making a firm of that one day!

I thought I had replied about going in the draw but I cant see it so goodness knows.
I didnt go in the drawer because if I get something I have not backed in real life and it wins I get depressed. Still I did pick winner and second in real life so not depressed - going to enjoy a nice bottle of red tonight.

I was a massive dedicated fan of Denman and to be honest doing well off of him was not difficult as he was so successful. We have come out of a golden 5 years for racing with some incredible stars - Denman, Kauto, Big Bucks, Istabraq, Frankel etc. I suspect it will be quiet for a few seasons - maybe the odd superstar but not thickly spread like they have been recently. We have missed Sprinter Sacre this season hopefully he will be back next year.
To be fair I may choose to bet on Cheltenham if I am a fan of something but the only race I really bet on purely on paper is the Grand National because its uniqueness lends well to profit making if approached the right way. While picking a single winner is not easy it is probably the most predictable race for choosing a bunch and having at least one place with odds that are long enough to cover betting on several horses. I had 6 selected and got 2 home (narrowly missed 5th). I manage it pretty much every year and if you only count Grand National betting I am comfortably in profit. Having said that I do not gamble large - the rule is if I cannot afford to put the money in an ashtray and burn it I cannot afford to bet and its £1 each way on the national (if working and flush its £2 each way lol)
All other racing I only bet if at the race course - I like to be able to see the horses as quite often you can spot the best ones - not always and you have to have some knowledge like if sweating up is normal for that particular animal (think it was the second race today won by something that always sweats badly at the start).

To be fair I do actually expend effort on it - I will look up all the individual horses, read lots of different "expert" assessments of them, run them through a stats program (because its quicker than doing it myself) and I will probably be left with 9/10 probables and maybe a couple of quirky outsiders to reduce down to 5 or 6 which I bet on. Minimum 4 hours solid work much more likely to spend double that in small chunks going through it.

I don't think, that even with the best insight, you can ever pick the top three!...I's just a game of chance!
....Loving this horse at the moments though, as the free £20 online bet went on a rank outsider, and the other bet went on a door number, where i grew up, that had a fucking ghost in it!
