the Royal Family
Who, if any, have you met, been introduced to, and what were they like?
I took my pa-in-law to the London boat show many years ago, he wore his RN blazer.
Princess Anne was doing the rounds with her entourage, clapped eyes on his blazer badge and made a bee line for us.
She then started chatting about his service, he mentioned how he was 'mere' a stoker on landing ship LS198 during the Normandy landings. She remained with us for a good 10 mins, before her equerry reminded her of the time,
"This man is a retired war hero, I am in awe of him, people will just have to wait" she replied.
Talk about making an old man very proud, quite teary and feeling very humble.
How different to meeting the QE2. Blank eyes, dead and bored expression and she was focussing 10 yards behind my eyes.

Re: the Royal Family
I haven't met any of them.
The story about your FIL and Princess Anne is lovely. Pity she couldn't have been heir to the throne, she would have made a great no nonsense Queen....a worthy follow on after her mother.

Charles, Diana and Anne.
All at work at different times of course. Anne is very clued up. Charles was quite humorous and curious. Diana was very nicely dressed.

And you are dumb enough to have given them your bank details.

Re: the Royal Family
Like Andy I have had the privilege and pleasure of meeting Princess Anne.
It was many years ago at a big international exhibition hosted by the British organisation for which I was press officer and my job was to “shepherd” the national and local reporters and photographers who were covering the event.
She had spent the morning touring part of the exhibition and had been up to the top floor restaurant for lunch with her entourage of industrial bigwigs and local politicians and council officers, and was due on a lower floor at precisely half past one in the afternoon.
The times of her arrival on different floors were meticulously laid down because security was tight as a drum and Special Branch officers were firmly in control...and as edgy as hell because the exhibition was only days after the devastating IRA bomb attack on the Tory Party conference.
HRH was scheduled to leave the restaurant at 1.25pm and arrive at our location at 1.30. By 1.35 she hadn’t arrived and sinister looking blokes in suits sporting worried expressions started mumbling into their radios.
One of them came up to me and said “where the hell are they?”...and was less than happy when I told him that I had no idea.
Him: “You’re the f***ing press officer here and it’s your f***ing job to know where she f***ing is!”
Me: “You’re Special Branch. Isn’t it your job to know where she is?”
Him” Don’t tell me my job you f***ing arsehole.....”
After several more, er, heated discussions between us concerning exactly where the Queen’s daughter had got to, she suddenly appeared, retinue in tow, and dutifully posed for the cameramen before moving on to see the exhibits.
As she passed us she gave us a dazzling smile and said. “Good afternoon gentlemen. Sorry...had to go to the ladies’ room...”
Fantastic. I love her to bits.

My daughter dines out on the story, Quill. She prefers to lay family claim to the saga by boasting “My dad actually lost Princess Anne......”

Ha, ha! My partner once drove her mobility scooter through the Queen’s dining room at Sandringham, courtesy of a very considerate security man. Needless to say HM wasn’t having her lunchtime bacon sarnie and tomato cup-a-soup at the time!

Re: the Royal Family
I’ve met Prince Charles in NI when he visited the barracks I was living in. At the time Mr. C was a lowly corporal and also not part of the unit based there so no invite to the Sgts Mess for us. Still I went up and they had put tents up as it was raining(it was springtime in NI so nothing new there) and even though he was running late he stopped and talked to all of us. I was pregnant with Senior and he asked me questions about it all and wished me luck. Very nice of him and he was more handsome in person nor were his ears as big as they sometimes seem in pictures.
Princess Alexandra I met in Germany when I was pregnant with Junior (see the pattern?) as she was visiting families whose OH were deployed in Bosnia. Another pregnant lady and I were told to sit in a corner to rest and when she came over we both struggled to get up but she insisted we sit and sat down with us and chatted for about 5 minutes. Lovely lady.
Third time The Queen. Well sort of. We were up at Buck House as Mr. C was getting a gong ( and no I wasn’t pregnant lol). We were sat at the end near a door by the balcony where one of the Guards bands play. I chose it just in case the boys needed the loo because we were sitting for quite some time. Anyhoos after the National anthem, she starts walking down the aisle (she had entered up at the front earlier and had no idea she would go out this way) and was right in front of us. The boys were dressed in kilts and I had my hat on. Up to this point she was serious face. Right as she got in front of us I hissed to the boys to bow and I did a short bob, and she breaks into this sweet smile looking right at us. In the video you can see my hat go up and down lol. And then she walked out. Brilliant. Mr. C was also one of the ones that she spent time talking to (she doesn’t have the time for everyone). Special day. Then we went out and did the official photos, mingled with a few celebs and then took our sweet time walking out. Our families were right outside the gate (and a very nice policeman let my stepfather get up front in his disability scooter when my mum said why they were all there) and gobs of tourists. We all posed for I don’t know how many pictures for tourists. There are photos and videos of us all over the world lol. And Mr. C very kindly let most of them hold the medal while their family took pictures.

I'm so jealous, the only time I've had a brush with the Royal Family is when I, of course, received my traditional Queen's welcome to England down at Heathrow.

Imaginary girl friends can be any age you want.
Actually, the real ones can be any age above 17, not that I'd want one any younger than 25.
Just kidding. At 45 I dated girls in their 20s. Now I'm sorta drawing the line at late 30s.
