Americans 'elated' at first U.S. citizen in the Royal Family; wonder if he could become President some day
In the Duchess of Sussex's home neighbourhood, it is fair to say the celebrations were somewhat muted.
But there was no mistaking the pride and goodwill at news of the birth of LA's first royal baby.
It is five thousand miles from Windsor to Windsor Hills in Los Angeles, the neighbourhood where Meghan Markle grew up and where her mother still lives, but the early morning news featured high up the news bulletins.
At the Simply Wholesome health food shop, customers told us they were "elated" and "delighted". One even said "it's really a trip".
There was no hiding the delight a few miles away at the Rose Cottage Tea Room. Meghan once had tea in this small slice of England in California and the birth was big news.
Life-size cut-outs of the royals, standing behind a pushchair - that's a "stroller" to Americans - adorned the outside, baby scones were being baked inside. The first of the day's customers gushed at the news.
"We're delighted that all is well and the baby's well, the mother is well, it is great news," said proprietor Mary Fry.
In such a diverse city as Los Angeles, there is some surprise that the birth of a biracial baby into the Royal Family has become noteworthy.
But comedian Angie Stocker, a mum of two in her own biracial family, says the conversation can only be helpful.
She said: "Being biracial is out there. It's not crazy, we're not a different species, we're all people.
"I feel like it's important to talk about it and when it becomes a talking point I think that's good because that means something is going to change."
Could the young royal one day become US president?
As Americans digested the news of the new arrival in the UK, the question also arose over whether the royal baby could grow up to one day run for president of the United States.
As the child of a US citizen and therefore born a citizen himself, it would appear to be a possibility, subject to all kinds of legal manoeuvring on both sides of the pond.
No-one can run for president until they are 35, though, so the Sussexes have a few years before they have to worry about the political implications.
It means, for now at least, they have America's best wishes.

The fondness between my home country and the country I hope to call my new home always makes me feel good. I hope this birth helps remind people of the special relationship the U.S. and the UK have had ever since, say, 1812

I hope to see us some day, in our 80s, watching a man with an English accent being inaugurated as PUSA, that would be very strange and cool.

Winston Churchill was half American by birth – a fact of which he was deeply proud.
In his first address to a joint session of the United States Congress, on 26 December 1941, he teased the assembled Senators and Representatives with the mischievous suggestion, “If my father had been American and my mother British, instead of the other way ’round, I might have got here on my own!”

They would have to manipulate the rules a bit...
Previously, it was claimed that the POTUS had to born in the USA..
Not simply conceived there, let alone merely having an American parent.
Just look at Donnie Dumpster's and SmellyBum's laughable claims that Barack Obama was born to Muslim parents in Nigeria, then apparently smuggled into the USA with a faked birth certificate..
And now Smelly' is threatening to disown the Royal Family, on the spurious grounds that nobody with a darker complexion than his pallid poxy skin should ever be there !!!

Churchill wasn't speaking of POTUS, but comparing himself to a legislator ("I woulda gotten here on my own"--he was speaking to Congress). The Constitution doesn't limit Representatives and Senators the way it does the President. If they did then Ted Cruz, who was born in Canada, wouldn't be a Senator.
The Federalist Papers reveal that the founders were paranoid that some Brit would run for the office of president, and America would soon be back in the British fold. Of course, everyone was British born in the colonies; so they made the qualification that s/he had to be native born.
It's actually kinda like the way Russia has taken over the US. Pay a dude to run for the office, finance his campaign (or hack into voting machines), and if he ends up to be president, you are in the cat birds seat.

McCain and George Romney were not born in the US, yet they were both eligible.
And several our are first presidents were born in a British colony.

McCain and George Romney were not born in the US, yet they were both eligible.
Both lost, so there was never a challenge. Besides, they were citizens in their own right, being born of American parents.

Yes, but were they native born? That's the distinction that the founders made, because of course all colonists were British born until the Declaration.

Yes, being born a citizen is the key point, not the place of birth.

Obviously things changed when the last 'born-a-'Brit' died off. Then, standard protocols for US citizenship took over.

I've been completely straightforward about this with you!
Ooh, "straightforward," now there's an unfortunate phrasing

But would Archie want that poisoned chalice?
His yoga loving mum & nan may indoctrinate him into a very chilled sort. Laid back.
Takes a certain level of testosterone & 'aggressiveness' to be the sort of alpha-male who wants to be a 'leader of men'
