The first known European explorers (Dutch, Spanish..) reached Australia in 1606...

I know that...but "Als I Lay on Yoolis Nacht" was written and hit the charts, so to speak, some 300 years before Europeans arrived "down under"...and we do, these days, tend to talk about geographical discovery as occurring after Continental plates had stopped drifting around and bashing into each other.

My outright fave is "Silent Night". Sung by a good choir in a Cathedral. Truly exquisite.
