Favorite songs
Yeah, another one
I wanted to showcase a few of my favorite songs from a genre that got unfairly named "alternative country" -- it's really just country music that didn't embrace the polished Nashville aesthetic and stayed true to what country music had always been before the commercialization of the genre -- in fact, some of my absolute favorite songs are called "alt-country":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GHpqrSnXos
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JsKbaYpLdE
(Same singer, different bands on the first two)
And maybe my favorite song of all time:

First Old 97s song I ever heard, on a local-band radio program that still airs on Sunday nights in Dallas-Fort Worth:

Re: Favorite songs
If I had to pick one set of recordings I'd only get to listen to for the rest of my life, I would have to choose the Beatles. They were the greatest pop music group, ever ... I have listened to everything they've recorded, and if I don't listen to some songs as much as others, it's only because I heard those songs so many times before.
Nothing to kick it off in quite the same way as Paul McCartney's "1-2-3-4" at the beginning of "I Saw Her Standing There." Lennon's only contribution was to change the original lyric from "never been a beauty queen" to "you know what I mean," and that made all the difference

I admit if I had to choose a band, they would be up there, but if I had to choose one and only one, it would be Elvis hands down for sheer volume of works and so many tunes that I love.
Still I love many beatle songs and their earliest tracks to me are the best.

Re: Favorite songs
Got to add some more Beatles favorites ... as someone who heard the hits so many times that I looked for more of their brilliance on deeper tracks
Hell, they even did country music well! I can't forget when I went into a record store owned by an elderly Texan lady and she was playing this, and said, "Just listen to those boys pickin'"

Elvis was a thief!
A thief with a golden voice, it must be said.

A thief?
Blasphemy.
To think back then they banned him from the wasit down for that cool dancing on TV.
It really shows how far we have come eh Ben.

Lennon had the best rock singing voice of ALL TIME.
Just listen to this song, I defy you not to feel young in the best way

Yeah, was a time that Elvis was thought to be ... BLACK! (gasp)
That's why people call him a thief, but nobody owns music; it's for everyone!

They thought Buddy Holly was black too.
Another great artist and to me ahead of his time.

Re: Favorite songs
I mean, compare this:
to this:
The Beatles might not have written, but they did the song best.
I read that Lennon was sick as a dog when he sang this in the studio. He took his shirt off, stepped up to the mic and basically said "fuck it"

From your mouth to God's ear! A native of Lubbock, Texas (which has very little to be proud of, besides him), Buddy was one of the greats who was tragically cut short before he could do what he was probably going to do.
The Beatles covered his work and wondered, rightly, what he might have achieved if he hadn't died in that plane wreck.
I still think a lot of rock music owes a debt to him ... or at least to how the Ramones interpreted his work

No way, it was good but was never the best.
Can think of countless better mind when it comes to a rock voice.
They have far more distinctive voices than John, and can think of many more.

Re: Favorite songs
Interesting also that Holly was part of that era in American pop music when it wasn't really decided between country and rock. Johnny Cash's early work reflects that conflict:

Very much agree ben
Have to say John Lennon was about one of the best song writers and his songs are testament to how powerful they are.

Okay, you must be high
Morrison was great, true -- but no Lennon.
John Lennon is the signature voice of rock music in a way nobody else can compare to ... if I had to pick somebody else? Well hell ...

Re: Favorite songs
Though, Hendrix was fantastic in his own right. One of my favorite recordings is Texas-native Stevie Ray Vaughan doing "Voodoo Chile"
(don't care how YouTube spells the title, the song is "Voodoo Chile" )

Ha ha sorry again to me he is good but no way the best Ben, there are far more distinctive more powerful rock voices.
His songs are powerful because of the words, not so much his voice.

Re: Favorite songs
Just one last thing to add about Elvis:
"Though I'm not the first king of controversy
I am the worst thing since Elvis Presley
To do black music so selfishly
And use it to get myself wealthy (hey!)"
-- Eminem
