Surprised no one has mentioned it already.
But I guess they were immigrants, probably of swarthy complexion and were in Britain illegally.
Still a tragedy that they suffocated/froze to death crammed into a pitch black, freezing, airless coffin.
Some on here will be deeply upset.

The two "Vietnamese" people that I know best are ethnic Chinese. When Saigon fell it was the Chinese living in Vietnam that felt some of the harshest abuse as they were considered capitalist outsiders.

I think a lot of folks illegally immigrate like these folks. The actual immigrants are poor, but family members in the new country have done very well and pay to have them smuggled in, when legal means won't work.

Um, I can tell them apart, and I'd expect a fellow North Texan to be able to as well!

Sorry, but I am so bloody angry over this. I've just got back from church where my partner was conducting the service, and her opening intercessionary prayer was for the souls of these poor people....whether they were Chinese, Vietnamese, Syrians, Buddhists, Muslims or anyone or anything else.

They were human beings who wanted simply to find a better life for themselves at whatever cost, and by God they paid the ultimate price. And in a horribly inconceivable manner.

That's the sort of sympathy and compassion that I felt and showed, whether you approve or disapprove of my belief....not the callous exploitation we have seen from some quarters in this thread.

They certainly can tell the difference, at least many can. The differences between Thai vs Vietnamese vs Japanese vs Chinese vs Korean vs Burmese are pretty clear most of the time. Height, skin colour and facial features are the biggest tells. Though I'll admit I couldn't tell without having lived here for 5 years.

Though between Thai, Lao and Cambodian it is near impossible, same for the various ethnicities of Myanmar.

They are similar to the Kurds as they don't have a country and are scattered throughout SE Asia. They also were allied with the US during the Vietnam war and were therefore persecuted when that region fell to communism. There really aren't that many living in N Texas. For some reason there are a lot in Wisconsin. Guess the sponsoring churches were from there.

But I'd bet you couldn't tell a Hmong from a Laotian from a Vietnamese from a Chinese person.
