This Country Just Became the First to Make It Illegal To Pay Women Less Than Men
A new law making it illegal to pay men more than women has taken effect in Iceland.
The legislation, which came into force on Monday, the first day of 2018, means that Iceland is the first country in the world to legalise equal pay between men and women.
Under the new rules, companies and government agencies employing at least 25 people will have to obtain government certification of their equal-pay policies.
Those that fail to prove pay parity will face fines.
"The legislation is basically a mechanism that companies and organisations ... evaluate every job that's being done, and then they get a certification after they confirm the process if they are paying men and women equally," said Dagny Osk Aradottir Pind, a board member of the Icelandic Women's Rights Association.
"It's a mechanism to ensure women and men are being paid equally," she told Al Jazeera. "We have had legislation saying that pay should be equal for men and women for decades now but we still have a pay gap." {articleGUID} Iceland, an island country in the North Atlantic Ocean that is home to approximately 323,000 people has a strong economy, based around tourism and fisheries.

Most Western countries have equal pay laws. They can't fix gender pay gaps because men and women don't do the same jobs or even look at employment the same.

I think they are going to prove you wrong.
I get your point on gender pay gaps, but it is a problem in certain employment fields
They certainly are leading the way

It's not really a problem when you compare apples to apples. Women work fewer hours. Women refuse transfers more. Also, women don't work in high risk fields in the same numbers as men. Women also don't work in physically demanding jobs in the same numbers as men.
If you are a 22 year old Hispanic male, without any education and broken English, you can make as more roofing a house than a poorly educated white woman working at Wal Mart.
All you have to do is look at the trades, and the lack of women in them, to see where the overall gender gap comes from. There are almost no female plumbers or mechanics, and a law won't make them want to do that kind of work.

Hold on there.
Some women work fewer hours, to class all of them based on some, is where people end up getting this wrong.
You cannot look at the pay gap like that or on how many hours people do.
To even say doing less hours, means that person is less worth, based on the number of hours they do, is wrong. People are paid pro rata on salaries.
I undcerstand, not as many women do physically demanding jobs, but as seen, this is more based around office based work. It means if the Mexican works in the wallmart, he gets the same as the white woman in pay. The same if the white women is a roofer.
So numbers do not matter on how many more do such work. What matters is that people are equally paid for the same job

It explains the gender pay gap, which is different than paying people differently for the same job.
The gender pay gap compares the wages of all women to those of all men. It doesn't compare wages for the same jobs.
There is no pay gap when comparing the same jobs and the same amount of work.

I would beg to differ that it explains it at all, after watching it.
The reality is many women in high manangement roles are not paid the same as men
That is a fact.
Its also a fact that some women are being better paid than men in some Middle Management roles.
This works both ways and why some youtube clip by some nobody, is really not debating the reality of the problem

It explains the gender wage gap, which does not take individual jobs into account. It's simply the average wages of women in the country, vs the average wages of the men. Legislation can't fix that unless you are suggesting that women are forced into jobs they don't want.

It said the same thing I did. The average female in the UK makes less than the average male. They want to do something about that without addressing why that is the case. The only way that changes is by forcing or enticing women into jobs they don't want to do, but pay more.

You never read it properly, espcially in some a short tgime
I suggest you research a tad further and the link is a good place to start.
I just want to see people paid for the same job equal, no matter the gender.
Surely, you can agree with that?

I am happy to see anyone get paid the same amount as me... providing they are required to produce the same level of output and quality as me for that same amount of money...

Waste of effort
Men and women are and have always been paid equally for doing the SAME job.
The Liberal socialists seem to think a female tea lady should earn as much as a male brain surgeon

I believe that very statement
Equal pay is different, it does not make people equal, but equal in pay for the same jobs that they do.

Re: This Country Just Became the First to Make It Illegal To Pay Women Less Than Men
MYTH 5: Women earn 77 cents for every dollar a man earns—for doing the same work.
FACTS: No matter how many times this wage gap claim is decisively refuted by economists, it always comes back. The bottom line: the 23-cent gender pay gap is simply the difference between the average earnings of all men and women working full-time. It does not account for differences in occupations, positions, education, job tenure or hours worked per week. When such relevant factors are considered, the wage gap narrows to the point of vanishing.
Wage gap activists say women with identical backgrounds and jobs as men still earn less. But they always fail to take into account critical variables. Activist groups like the National Organization for Women have a fallback position: that women’s education and career choices are not truly free—they are driven by powerful sexist stereotypes. In this view, women’s tendency to retreat from the workplace to raise children or to enter fields like early childhood education and psychology, rather than better paying professions like petroleum engineering, is evidence of continued social coercion. Here is the problem: American women are among the best informed and most self-determining human beings in the world. To say that they are manipulated into their life choices by forces beyond their control is divorced from reality and demeaning, to boot.

Re: This Country Just Became the First to Make It Illegal To Pay Women Less Than Men
Executive Summary
Using a unique dataset of more than 46,900 resumes shared on Glassdoor, we illustrate how men and women sorting into different college majors translates into gender gaps in careers and pay later.
Many college majors that lead to high-paying roles in tech and engineering are male dominated, while majors that lead to lower-paying roles in social sciences and liberal arts tend to be female-dominated, placing men in higher-paying career pathways, on average.
The most male-dominated majors are Mechanical Engineering (89 percent male), Civil Engineering (83 percent male), Physics (81 percent male), Computer Science and Engineering (74 percent male), and Electrical Engineering (74 percent male).
The most female-dominated majors are Social Work (85 percent female), Healthcare Administration (84 percent female), Anthropology (80 percent female), Nursing (80 percent female), and Human Resources (80 percent female).
Nine of the 10 highest paying majors we examined are male dominated. By contrast, 6 of the 10 lowest-paying majors are female dominated.
Even within the same major men and women often end up on different career tracks, resulting in a pay gap that could follow them for a lifetime. In our sample, across the 50 most common majors, men and women face an 11.5 percent pay gap on average in the first five years of their careers.
Majors leading to the largest pay gaps favoring men include Healthcare Administration (22 percent pay gap), Mathematics (18 percent pay gap) and Biology (13 percent pay gap).
Majors leading to the largest pay gaps favoring women — a reverse pay gap — include Architecture (-14 percent pay gap), Music (-10.1 percent pay gap) and Social Work (-8.4 percent pay gap).
Choice of college major can have a dramatic impact on jobs and pay later on. Our results suggest that gender imbalances among college majors are an important and often overlooked driver of the gender pay gap.

Until you start forcing women into better degrees, the wage gap is not going anywhere.
Do we want to force women into those degrees?

In Australia, women doing the same 'Award Wage' job as the men have been earning the same hourly-rate for the last 30-odd years...
In every award-wage job that I've been in over the years, those people doing the same work in the same workplace under the same classification and conditions have earn't the same hourly rate..
Comparing electricians with hairdressers with coalminers with nurses with doctors with lawyers is really "comparing apples with oranges", and like Maddog points out, that's where many of the arguments coming from certain womens' activist groups are regularly breaking down -- they keep on refusing outright, to compare "like with like".

Women doing the same job as men get paid the same here too.
The problem is, there are millions of men and women that do different jobs and you can't compare them.

What people fail to realize is that business likes to make money. If they could actually hire women at a lower rate for the same job, the unemployment rate for women would be about 0, because they would always be hired first.
But that's not the case.

there is some other cases in the higher end of town that support a wage gap, but it normally comes down to ability to self promote and confidence to ask for a pay rise.

No "lefties" that I know have ever suggested such stupidity, Tommy...
However, what a lot do object to, is the ridiculous salaries, excessive "bonuses", and multi-million dollar payouts that some directors, CEOs and Chairmen will receive...
While at the same time, so many exploitive "big business" scroungers are continualy trying to push basic wages down below that $5/hour below-subsistance level..

Bullshit, SmellyDumbKopf...
Up until the 1960s, even the 1980s in some places, women could often be paid only around 1/2 to 3/4 as much as men, for doing exactly the same job..
And then there was your beloved 'Apartheid' "race"-based system in Sarf Arfrika -- where up to the 1980s, not only did your former homeland openly and legally discriminate on gender like everybody else -- but some businesses could legally pay 'blacks' as little as 1/6 as much as as their 'white' co-workers, for exactly the same job !

Far leftys I was talking about... and I share your objections in the rest of what you posted too, totally agree!

I agree with the whole equal pay thing but really, if I'm getting my arse burned in a fire, I think I'd just prefer to see a guy coming to carry me out, than a woman.
Yeah, I sound sexist but some things are just performed better by a man than a woman.
I'll wait for the verbal bashing.

Re: This Country Just Became the First to Make It Illegal To Pay Women Less Than Men
The 'gender pay gap' figures are totally misleading because they are not comparing like for like per actual job/position...
For example... Say that I ran a painting & decorating company employing 10 people...
Me as director and contracts manager on 60,000 year
7 actual painters on 140 a day, so = 35,000 year
1 running the office/payroll/admin/phone on 35,000
1 cleaner doing 2 hours a week for 30 quid a week...
If all the painters were men, and office worker and cleaner were women... then going by the 'gender pay gap' calculation... the average pay for men would be...
60,000 + (35,000 x 7) / 8 = 38,125...
And for women...
(35,000 + 1,500) / 2 = 18,250...
Then have some twat to try to say that men are getting twice as much money as women in my company... is completely distorting the facts!!!

What's a woman??
Don't you realise you're being extremely insensitive and simply assuming people's genders??

"Women are still unequal to men. It's 2018. Hello! This. must. change. When are we finally going to step up and demand true equality?
Don't believe me?
Here are some facts.
Women are only about 15 percent of the homeless population. Less than a quarter of suicides. Only 24 percent of homicide victims. A measly 7 percent of workplace fatalities. Roughly 10 percent of the prison population.
We are underrrepresented.
Ladies, this is the year that we become equal to men. Let's do our part."

Re: This Country Just Became the First to Make It Illegal To Pay Women Less Than Men
Nearly 10,000 people graduated with MBAs from University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business between 1990 and 2006.
In 2009, three economists decided to study a quarter of those graduates. They asked a detailed set of questions about the jobs they’d held since graduation, how many hours they worked, where they worked, and what they had earned each year.
The researchers wanted to know how gender would affect the career trajectories of all these newly minted business school graduates.
"We decided to focus on MBAs, because if you think about women’s access to the top echelons, the corporate sector is one where they have had a particularly difficult time," says Marianne Bertrand, an economist at the University of Chicago who led the study.
That’s an accurate statistic, but it doesn’t capture the complexity of the wage gap. It doesn’t, for example, reveal that the wage gap changes over the course of a female lawyer’s career. Or that some professions have really big wage gaps and others have small ones.
Understanding the nuances of the wage gap is important to understanding why women in the United States still earn less than men. It helps explain how to fix the problem, too. But it requires going much, much deeper than one statistic.

The survey of thousands of business school graduates showed that men had slightly higher salaries right out of the gate.
Women earned an average salary of $115,000 right out of graduate school, while men earned $130,000. Men also averaged a few more weekly hours and a bit more prior experience as they entered the workforce. But the most astounding thing happened nine years later: The distance between men and women’s salaries more than doubled
Nine years into their careers, women saw their salaries rise to an average of $250,000 — while men's salaries averaged out at $400,000. Men were earning 60 percent more than women. When we talk about the gender wage gap, we often talk about it as one thing

well it is only looking at MBA grads which are not junior uni students in most cases, it's a masters and Very common for it to be studied by Mature age students once they a reached a peak in their careers
which is why this bit basically rights off the whole study
Men also averaged a few more weekly hours and a bit more prior experience as they entered the workforce.
MBA is a bad example to use since it is a very variable qualification and most positions where holding a MBA is important have high variance in remuneration based on personal pay negotiation skills.

Oh dear, it seems someone never read the study, did they?
No it does not right off the whole study either, showing you never read the study, did you chap?
The careers of MBAs from a top US business school are studied to
understand how career dynamics differ by gender. Although male
and female MBAs have nearly identical earnings at the outset of their
careers, their earnings soon diverge, with the male earnings advantage
reaching almost 60 log points a decade after MBA completion.
Three proximate factors account for the large and rising gender gap
in earnings: differences in training prior to MBA graduation, differences
in career interruptions, and differences in weekly hours. The
greater career discontinuity and shorter work hours for female MBAs
are largely associated with motherhood.

So in many cases it is juniors at the outset of their careers and why we generally dont listen to silly aussies on this when they fail to actually read something.

Believe that all business schools will see that kind of average...
Rather thanmsimply the Harvard MBAs used in their shaky survey..
And you can also believe in flying pigs.
Nothing like cherrypicking stat's to support overgeneralised statements..

LOL no it is looking at their post MBA careers it even says a difference in Starting Experience (meaning it is not the beginning of their Actual careers. Most people that find they need a MBA have already worked their way up to the top of middle management and need it to progress into executive level roles)
you think people go from Uni to junior role paying 6 figures?

Oh dear, it seems, someone cannot understand basic English
ha ha ha ha
So you make speculations and cannot offer anything to back your claim
Even worse that you fail to understand what "outset" means
So where is this evidence in the US, that most people have worked their up to middle Management beforer obtaining an MBA?
I also know you never read the study, that is evident on the MBA.
Sorry, but Veyashit wont suffice
