It's a debate I have with my OH all the time, he is an ex soldier. As far as I am concerned, if you join the forces you join knowing that you will kill, and you will kill because of orders that you might not agree with. Now for me, that would most definitely stop me joining one of the armed forces. I could not, and would not be the gun for a politician to use to persue policies I might not agree with. If someone came after my family I would defend them, but not because of orders by someone else. I simply cannot imagine letting myself be used in that way.

It’s amazing Dianne Abbott has had to endure insults, racism, vitriol and smear since she became the first black female MP in fact all her political life, every time she shows her face the knives come out, Yet she has had a long and illustrious career as a politician, even serving in government, she has been returned to the commons in election after election by her constituents and has always been the champion of ordinary people.

What a strange and silly thread. All the OP wanted was for people to criticise the torrent of abuse directed at this MP.

Yet few people bothered to address this, or even click the link. Instead they are falling over themselves to hammer home their belief that two wrongs make a right.

Two wrongs do not make a right, actually. Situations like this need a bigger person to rise above low behaviour. No use preaching that so and so behaved in a low way, then promptly sinking down to the low level that you have just criticised.

I totally agree and for that reason, I once turned down a very nice soldier after he asked me for a date. We met in a pub and got on really well all night, but I couldn't get past the fact that he thought war was a valid option, (and he was very convincing as well as very good looking!), and I couldn't find a reason to agree with him.
I knew it would get in the way and it would've been a big, "in the way" for me.

Depends on what you mean by "kill for our country." Well people have been quite happy to get tore into Dianne Abbot for racist remarks that she has made and true enough she has some form on that score but mild in comparison to what I see on the tweets highlighted. It's a bit srange though that I can't muster up anyone to codemn them.

Hopkins admitted on LBC she is trolling the left wing to create anger against her. She knows she is drawing a fine line against accepable broadcasting and knows she will overstep the mark and get LBC in trouble and get herself fired.
Perhaps its a shame her brain surgery for her epilepsy was successful. Failure would have prevented her continuing her career of "hate".

And why do you respect them? It's just a job...there's nothing sacrosanct about it in my mind. If someone is awarded the Medal of Honor, the Navy Cross or the Distinguished Service Cross, I wouldn't deny my admiration. It's just like if somebody in civilian life did something heroic.

I don't particularly dislike people in the military, either. I do dislike what they are given permission to do. And what they get away with. With so much excitement to war, no one pays attention to the little things. That's how babies get lost. Like people who work in a quarantine ward...I think it's unhealthy.

That's why we should know the reason for war. At least articulate a policy. We go about it all too lightly these days. Most of our wars have been for reasons of revenge. That's a very poor excuse at a very costly price.

I cannot believe the stupidity of the Second Iraq war. Lies to get us in. It's still unclear what we intended going in...we in America are covered as far as oil is concerned. Was it Dick Cheney and profits for Halliburton? Was it just to suck off the tit of the American treasury? Maybe a little bit. But mostly, I just think that we wanted to lose our temper.
