Re: Americans - Don't Call Me Racist Again
I don't think so, Ben. Well yes, he is...but he's more. He's the classic person about which this story was told. Leonard Berstein, former music director of the New York Philharmonic (now deceased), wrote West Side Story about the immigration experience of first-generation New Yorkers.
New York has a unique history of being the gateway to the largest immigration influx in the world. During the 19th-century, everyone wanted to come to America, the land of streets paved with gold. Irish, Italians, Poles, Swedes, Russian and German Jews, and last but not least, the Puerto Ricans, all came to Ellis Island, and on to NYC.
West Side Story is about these people learning how to live with one another. In the old countries, they had lived with their shut-in nations and shut-in neighborhoods. Frankly, they still do...that's the nature of Europe. Stormee, look at your own, and tommy's approach to immigration. But in America, we learned to overcome that innate hostility...except in the case of the black.
The specific scene you refer to is setting the stage for what comes next...the melting pot. They are immigrants, all becoming Americans. And they will merge and melt into one society. But first, the stage must be set to show the prejudices and backdrop for the process of becoming American.
You are at that stage right now, Stormee. You have yet to learn the give-and-take of accepting other nationalities and races in your presence. Show you an early scene from West Side Story, and immediately you recognize yourself in the pre-adjustment setting.
Why don't you watch the full story, and witness the unfolding of compassion and brotherhood...instead of retreating into your hovel and screaming at the "Pakis" in White Chapel.

You couldn't be more wrong. Texas voluntarily joined the United States a few years after winning its independence from Mexico, which it did because Antonio López de Santa Anna abolished federalism and made himself dictator.

LOL
the Story is actually about how people like Major are knobs that eventually lose in the end. Love after all does conqueror, You know what?
it is like i said, 'too hard to hate when trying to get in each other pants'
And Notice How long ago it is set? so much for the 'experiment' as the Uk playing catch up used to get called by some on Brits here.

The majority of the shouts 'Racist' that I have seen have actually come from people in this country. I've had quite a few shouted at me - I'm Scottish

Besides, if racism means what Major says it does in his own sig, he should be proud to be called a racist:
So okay, Major, I'll never think of you as a patriot again
RACISM MEANS PATRIOTISM WHICH MEANS YOU LOVE AND PROTECT YOUR OWN COUNTRY.
So okay, Major, I'll never think of you as a patriot again
Re: Americans - Don't Call Me Racist Again
MAJOR and TOMMY -- a couple of braindead and unthinking troglodytes, wanting to lock themselves away from the rest of the world, shuting out anyone who looks different, sounds different, thinks different, smells different, eats different to what narrow little range of experiences their narrow-minded, closeted and insular little corner of creation has exposed them too...
FOREVER DOOMED to be jumping at shadows, fearing the unknown, resisting change, denying the inevitable -- always open to the most outlandish and far-fetched utterances from their beloved extreme right-wing hatemongers..
METHINKS those two and many others like them, overindulged too much in cheap plonk, homebrews, various illicit drugs and methylated spirits in their younger years; exacerbating brain damage already done from being dropped on their heads as babies, and perhaps later on getting punched around the head too much when mouthing off.

"MAJOR" Stormee or one of his Lickspit minions redded me !!!
What a bunch of blind, gormless and humourless little prigs they be..
Stormee : #1 racist and second stupidest person on this site;
Stormee : doesn't seem to realise that he is the worst resident troll on here, but has grabbed the label to falsely use against his opponents and critics;
Stormee : obviously doesn't understand the meaning of words like "moral", but still chooses to use them when lamenting his perceived lack of quality politicians to support..

Wolf stop attacking other posters! I've asked you twice now. Two different threads today where you have arrived to simply make derogatory remarks about other posters.
Ive asked you twice today, I'm not asking again.
If I see another post or I get a report, you will be basemented.

HOW ABOUT you ask Stormee, Tommy, Didge, and now nicko, to stop attacking me, veya, Quill, Ben, sassy, 'Andy, and any other "lefties" they don't agree with ???

Re: Americans - Don't Call Me Racist Again
Eddie, it seems to me that this whole thread started with Major addressing himself: "Don't Call Me Racist Again." Both Ben and I responded in the second person. Veya backed up my casting of Major in West Side Story. Soon Raggs was in the stew, then nicko.
When hasn't the discussion been personal, by invitation no less? Is this another example of British (your) bias against the 'colonists'?
The thread is from a scene in a play that is misinterpreted by the OP. We are not to comment? We cannot say, hey, you're the very person about whom this play was written? Hypocracy!!
If Stormee, or anyone else, wants to make a thread about himself, who are you to say: if anyone adds to the thread s/he is off-limits? If he started the thread about himself, it seems to me he waives his right to complain.

Quill, firstly don't ever patronise or insult me by even insinuating that I would defend someone simply because they're British. I hope you apologise for that as I've never, ever given any reason for you to think that. That's actually quite annoyed me that you, as fair-minded as you can be, would say that, coupled with the fact I'm probably more similar to wolfie in my political views than I am storm!
Secondly, wolf has appeared in threads over the last few days (perhaps weeks) simply attacking people.
I will refer this to Ben and Veya. I'm sure you won't think they're biased.

Oh grow up, eds. You know damn good and well where the lines are drawn here. The bias against Aussies and the US on this forum is overwhelming.
eddie wrote:Secondly, wolf has appeared in threads over the last few days (perhaps weeks) simply attacking people.
Then address it on those threads. Here, the OP has addressed himself, and it's hypocrisy that no one can take exception to his argument. He waived his right to be insulated from criticism by opening up the subject.
eddie wrote:I will refer this to Ben and Veya. I'm sure you won't think they're biased.
By all means. They were the first to respond to Storm's invitation to talk about himself. He used himself as the example, and then completely misplaced the argument.
He walked right into his own trap...it's important because for the first time the analogy is drawn between the US and the UK on immigration and xynephobia--using the very play that was written to make the point--and we see precisely where the US has succeeded, and the UK is failing.
That was the underlying point that Wolf was making...and you ignored.

Well, I'd point out that eddie has also had lots of positive things to say about America -- I guess I notice that more than anything she has to say about Australia. She really doesn't down other countries much, as far as I've seen.
Major did create this thread about himself and the question of whether he's a racist, so he's fair game in this thread and should have known people would push back against the idea that he's not -- or that a musical somehow proves Americans are uniformly as racist as he is.
But nobody should be pulling other members into the thread, regardless of whether they say things similar to Major. That's just more of the line-drawing, my-side-vs.-your-side that we definitely do not want to see here.

Some "responded" by hurling abuse at him - if you think that constitutes "debate", there's not much hope for this forum. You're always complaining about the abuse, and yet you think it's fine when your colonial buddies indulge in it.

You mean anyon then that follows an ideology based on a tribalistic nature, which would include the Abrahamic religions, as they view their own believers as if family and part of the same tribe, depenent on the different interpretations followed?
So you agree that literal believers would also then screw it up for everyone else, as their goal is far higher than nationalism, but global domination?

No, actually his title reads: Americans, don't call me racist again.
In other words, after you watch this you Americans, you can't call me racist.
And some people disagreed.
I think he's old-fashioned and possibly slightly ignorant but I wouldn't say he was a racist.
But then I'm a bit loathe to judge people I don't l know that well.

Partly true, as he stated based off his own interpretation of the show, that people could not call him racist again, so this was opening him up for this to actually be challenged by the thread title. To then ask if the show was racist.
His view is that it is racist, which someone how then thus to him excuses his views which are racist as proven many times.
He did actually open up himself to be challenged here, but you are right about how some of the comments were more than personnal

No he didn't ask, that's correct. But if you're going to 'challenge' people to the view that you're not something or other, it does rather set you up for people to say the opposite.
It's all opinion anyway.
My only gripe was wolfie bringing other posters into his posts and Quill accusing me of defending storm because he was British.

Re: Americans - Don't Call Me Racist Again

Partly true, as he stated based off his own interpretation of the show, that people could not call him racist again, so this was opening him up for this to actually be challenged by there thread title. To then ask if the show was racist.
His view is that it is racist, which someone how then thus to him excuses his views which are racist as proven many times.
He did actually open up himself to be challenged here, but you are right about how some of the comments were more than personnal
He said that West Side Story isn't racist. The first post is a bit confusing really.
I think you will find he was taking the piss, by going "no, No, NO.
In other words he does view it as racist as then this whole thread then makes absolutely zero sense if he did not.

I don't think he was taking the piss - which is why it didn't make sense.

West side story was based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliette...and it was filled with racism.
It applies as much today as it did back then.
The main change imo is George Chakiris, he was so gorgeous back in the day.

Its a very odd way to show something, as its not racist per say, but exposes racism within a story.
So if he views gangs being racist towards each other as not racist, then by default off that, he is then racist.
Whatever way you look at this, he jumped in with both feet and got drenched

He said it wasn't racist though, and I think he meant that. Like I said, it didn't make much sense.

It would be like sassy posting up a clip of Fagin from Oliver claiming she is not antisemitic, is about the best way I can compare this.
