Police call emergency meetings to deal with post-Brexit vote explosion of racist hate crime






EU Referendum unleashes wave of hate crime and racism  
An explosion of racist hate crime has occurred across Britain in the wake of the vote to leave the European Union.
Police chiefs have called emergency meetings to deal with the rise and called for enhanced sentencing for anyone convicted of racist disorder.
The Prime Minister has condemned reports of pro- Brexit voters abusing people from ethnic minorities, after several alleged racist attacks, graffiti and xenophobic leaflet distributing emerged.
True Vision, a police online hate crime reporting site, said there had been a 57 % rise in reports between Thursday and Sunday, with 85 instances reported so far.
Mr Cameron said: “We must be very clear about our commitment to tolerance, to diversity - and our complete intolerance of racism and hateful hate crimes we have seen in recent days.


He added: “We have a fundamental responsibility to bring our country together.
“In the past few days we have seen despicable graffiti daubed on a Polish community centre, we have seen verbal abuse burled against individuals because they are members of ethnic minorities.

Attacks on Polish nationals and Muslims have also been reported as the National Police Chiefs’ Council said harsh sentences would be handed down to the culprits.
A Polish woman was the victim of a racially-aggravated assault less than 24 hours after the Brexit result.



The woman, in her 20s, was walking down an alleyway late on Friday night when two men assaulted her.
Wiltshire Police confirmed they believe the attack in Salisbury was racially-motivated.
In Huntington, Cambridgeshire, there have been reports of signs saying “Leave the EU , no more Polish vermin” posted through the letter boxes of Polish families on the day of the referendum result.

Halal butchers shop in Walsall petrol bombed

The Birmingham Mail and Metro report on a petrol bomb attack on a halal butcher’s shop in Walsall yesterday.
A bottle containing an “accelerant” was thrown inside the Kashmir Meat and Poultry shop in Wednesbury Road, Walsall at around 5.25pm on Monday, 27 June. The fire has caused serious damage to the store and the member of staff injured in the incident suffered bruising but no serious injuries. No one else was injured in the attack.
Shop owner Jamal Hussain told the local paper: “Yesterday somebody came to the shop – and the workers inside saw they had made a petrol bomb.
“They threw it in the shop and the fire started – the fire brigade and the police came.”
West Midlands Police are investigating the incident studying CCTV footage and making door-to-door enquiries in the area. The man suspected of the attack has been described as
“White, 6ft tall and wearing a blue jacket.”
One local resident told the Metro she believed the attack to be related to the referendum result. Mary Walker, 67, said: “I am sure it will be related to the referendum result, I have no doubt.
“I have overheard people making comments to Eastern European residents and Muslims that they should go home now.”
West Midlands Police are not treating the incident as a hate crime saying inquiries are still at an “early stage” and officers are “keeping an open mind as to the motive.”
Det Insp Greg Evans, of West Midlands Police said: “The man was not seriously injured, but it could have been much more serious.”
