Grandad shoots himself after finding out his benefits were being stopped
A grandad who had just found out his benefits were being stopped shot himself dead – after telling friends he was “unable to cope”.
Shaun Pilkington, 58, was sent a letter saying he was to lose his Employment and Support Allowance, which he got after a long-term illness.
He was told he would have to be reassessed and needed to prove he was eligible. But as the hearing approached, friends said Shaun, a licensed gamekeeper, became discouraged.
Days later he called police and said he was about to kill himself. They found him dead at his flat.
A neighbour said: “There were armed police everywhere. Sadly he’d gone through with his threat.
“It is a tragedy. He was upset because he got a letter saying his ESA was being stopped.
“He was pretty down about it and said he was finding it hard to cope with the decision. He was a lovely man. It is not fair what the Government is doing.”
Well-wishers left floral tributes and cans of Stella outside Shaun’s home in Beighton, Sheffield.
The neighbour added: “It all got on top of him – having no money for Christmas and being warned he’d lose his benefits.
“It’s wrong what they’re doing, targeting people on benefits. We haven’t got a lot of money but the Government seems intent on cutting it.”
Registered gun-keeper Shaun was divorced and had two grown-up children and a two-month-old grandson.
Another neighbour, Shani Hird, said yesterday: “We have lost a dear neighbour who shot himself due to his money being stopped. His appeal was due next week but he felt he could not carry on.
“This is so sad. This isn’t the first time this has happened and it won’t be the last. I think it is terrible the Government’s benefit cuts are causing vulnerable people so much pain and misery.”
Police yesterday confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances.
Shaun’s estranged family was too upset to talk. He joins a growing list of people who have taken their lives since the Tory-led Coalition employed private firm Atos to reassess thousands of people on long-term benefits.
Blind Tim Salter, 53, of Kinver, Staffordshire, died after being deemed fit to work. A coroner ruled the move to axe his benefit had contributed to his suicide.
Edward Jacques, 47, of Sneinton, Nottingham, took a fatal overdose after his benefit payments were stopped.
Jobless Richard Sanderson, 44, of Southfields, south-west London, stabbed himself in the heart. Unemployed electrician Lee Robinson, 39, of Crawley, Sussex, also took his own life.

Re: Grandad shoots himself after finding out his benefits were being stopped
Hang on the article says he got a letter saying he was being reassessed - not that his benefits were being stopped.
Just about everyone gets reassessed (after the Last Labour government started making a fuss about people getting benefits without ever being checked or rechecked) and they get reassessed to make sure that they haven't say had a hip replacement which has cured their arthritis (the sort of cases that keep appearing in the press under the guise of fraudulent claims)
So he has a chronic illness
He gets a letter saying he is being reassessed to make sure that there has been no change to his health (reassessments also cause people in the work related activity group to be moved to the support group if they have got worse)
Before the reassessment he kills himself.
Not exactly what the headline implies is it?

Oh and the Tory led coalition did not employ ATOS to reassess long term benefit claimants the previous Labour government did - and this government thought Labours idea was so good they did not change it.

Direct result of government policy and this evil firm ATOS....Someone ought to firebomb fucking ATOS.

The story said he got a letter calling him for reassessment - you know as well as I do that the reassessment letters say if you fail to return the questionnaire or attend the medical it will result in your benefit being stopped. So if he did the reassessment his benefit would not be stopped.

then of course there is the assessment, I mean, we all know how honest upright transparent and easy to deal with the SS ...er...I mean ATOS is to deal with, how they always give a fair assessment, with no thought at all to their targets for moving people off benefits at ANY cost. How people are assessed by REAL, fully trained doctors, not mere "health care professionals" pfffft.....If ever there was an evil in the world ....."health care professional" a term dreamed up to create a cordon of plausible deniability and non accountability.
and the interviews....attempts to prevent subjects having witnesses, objections to sessions being recorded by the subject themselves...why??? what have they to hide....threats, subjects being made subject to having to do things they plainly shouldnt, and then being recorded as "uncooperative" and thus a fail.... and YES I HAVE SEEN IT and YES I have given evidence at subsequent appeals, the appeals get won, but the cause is NEVER addressed....

I did read the article and I compensated for obvious reporter bias that indicated the letter saying benefit would be stopped was actually the one about the reassessment because after all reassessment letters do say benefit will be stopped if the person does not go for reassessment.
I am not defending either ATOS nor the government as both are quite simply appalling. I too have first hand experience of both and the appeals.
However it is my belief that exaggeration and at times outright lying about the problems do nothing whatsoever to strengthen the campaigners case against the system and actually serve to weaken it. Screaming headlines about stopped benefits resulting in a man killing himself are not going to result in a reassessment of the system if the first thing the investigators are going to discover is actually the benefits were not stopped at all and it was just a standard reassessment letter. The more often these exaggerated horror stories are blasted out the more it convinces the people running the system that people are over reacting and can be safely ignored.
A far better headline and campaign would be "WHY ARE REAL SICK PEOPLE SO TERRIFIED OF BENEFIT REASSESSMENTS" with stories taking the real facts - which face it are far more horrible than the headlines.

the daily fail and its associated anal beads have been issuing hysterical screaming headlines about how all these evil sick dole scroungers have been ruining the country, for years, when as I have said before the truth is that there is no such thing.....neither benefits NOR the very miniscule level of cheats is doing ANY harm to our economy, it is merely a convenient distraction for the sheep like masses hypnotised by jeremy kyle and x factor. Re: Grandad shoots himself after finding out his benefits were being stopped
I spend just as much time attacking DM stories about scroungers. However the fact is both sides of the argument have a nasty habit of taking a kernel of truth and building the most fantastic constructs off of it.
I mean the current system of reassessments has come about partly due to the fact that the Daily Mail and its ilk were able to present genuine cases of people who started out with a genuine claim but they recovered and did not tell the authorities. If it were not for the fact that this did indeed happen then there would have been no need to change the system. Equally when the system changes again as it inevitably will then it will be due to the fact that are genuine cases of unacceptable cruelty. In the meantime making out cases are unacceptable cruelty when they are not is of no more benefit than claiming the bride who takes a ton of painkillers to make it down the aisle on her wedding day is a scrounger.

Another thread playing on Guilt, so every time someone takes their lives we should change policies or laws?
Of course not, this is a sad event, but the reality is this person took their own life, when there were other options.
Sorry but guilt threads are just that, to play off the guilt, none here really gives a flying monkey's about the man's plight because they are using what he did to make a political message, I find that even worse.

If I WAS to feel the need to dribble in a corner, I would be hard pushed to find an empty one since the R/W seem to have cornered the market in them.

Of course not, this is a sad event, but the reality is this person took their own life, when there were other options.
Sorry but guilt threads are just that, to play off the guilt, none here really gives a flying monkey's about the man's plight because they are using what he did to make a political message, I find that even worse.
This has nothing to do with guilt and everything to do with a man taking his own life which he claimed was because of the cuts which he felt had left him isolated, without hope and without the means to carry on.
It appears to be happening more often as people struggle along and every time this happens then the media have every right to publish the story and people will and should start threads on it. These events will not be swept under the carpet like the Tory Party and their nodding dogs would like. No, they will be highlighted and so they should be.

Very well said Irn!
They will be shown up for what they are, every day, until the next election and no amount of RWhinging will stop that!

You just proved it is about guilt and not about whether he was in fact able to work. Most people everyday cope with life's problems and some people sadly take their own lives, yet you seek to blame a system that is seeking to end the lunacy of the last government where it allowed people to stay off work on benefits for the most ridiculous claims of not being able to work .
What you lefties fail to understand is that there is little reason why most people cannot work, as many can even when they have disabilities, but you would seek to pay people when they can work which is what is really wrong and also daft by the left as per usual.
So again you have chosen to not set up anything for this man, send his family anything and use his death to make a political statement which is disgusting

That latest ATOS monkey made me crack up a bit!
When i said that cancer sufferers were being made fit for work she said....'Only those that are in remission'
...Later in the long and ridiculous interview, when Doug was talking about his constant itching, she was quoting an article from the Daily Mail ...Something about some weird bloody miracle posion.
...I said..'I wouldn't believe anything that i read in the DM, to be true tbf'

What is disgusting is that this man was left isolated with a feeling of no hope to the extent that he ended his life and you actually believe that he was fit to work. That really says it all and I sincerely hope that the press do not let up on this and that they publish every single incident where this happens.
I'm sure the Tories and their nodding dogs would like it to go away but it won't and it shouldn't.

So why, at these interviews are they asking people, if they are considering suicide?
I'll go as far as to say, that they are prompting people, or playing on vulnerabilities to promote people to kill themselves.

...What got me, is that this ATOS monkey wasn't even aware, that the DWP has requested detailed medical notes from Doug's consultant, which have been sent back by Doug's consultant.
