Star Of Benefits Street - "Living On Benefits Is Too Cushy - They Need To Make It Tougher"
12th February 2014
Reality television star White Dee is set to go from Benefits Street to Downing Street after announcing she is to stand as an MP and has already attacked the welfare system for encouraging scroungers.
Dee, whose real name is Deidre Kelly came to fame after featuring on the Channel 4 show , which follows the lives of people living on welfare in James Turner Street in Birmingham.
Now she has revealed she intends to stand as an independent MP at the next election for Birmingham Ladywood and says more should be done by the Government to help people who work and that the benefits system is 'too comfortable' for those who don't want to find a job.
The Channel 4 television programme has highlighted flaws in the welfare system - namely that those who receive benefits are discouraged from taking even small jobs as any income could affect their state handouts.
In a blog on the Spectator website, where she donated her fee to the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, she said: 'Now I know quite a few working people that haven’t got £200 a week — and they’re working hard all day. That’s not right.

That would be a problem; here in the U.S. most on welfare benefits of any kind also have a job -- in many cases they have to have some income before they can qualify for certain benefits.
Of course, in cases of disability, etc. we need to do a far better job than we're doing. We have far too many people being turned out into the streets, where the average life expectancy is maybe a decade and where there's of course a huge motivation to turn to crime.

Eh?
So maybe they should only give benefits to those with a job?
Or only give benefits to those without a job?
This woman isn't the first to say they have been too well off on benefits.

But these are people who know they are receiving so much money they just aren't able to replace their luxury lifestyles on benefits with one of full time work.
We've all heard about those who "earn" so much they feel they should be starting out as managers - it's utterly ridiculous JD.
IDS has always said he will try and get people out of the "trap", and this woman and many others have said he is spot on.

Do you mean they work in the black economy whilst claiming benefits? I thought that was fraud.Sassy wrote:Same here, most people on benefit have a job.
The people in benefits street weren't to anxious to work from what I saw. I'm interested by White Dee announcement that benefits are too generous a little bit of honesty in this debate is a refreshing thing. Isn't it interesting how many people have found work now that welfare is being reigned in don't you think. Do you not feel it rather proves White Dees point.

There will be more unemployed if universal credits gets going because most people working have low incomes to start with and rely on child tax /tax credits to put their income up to a decent wage, self employed who were encouraged to go into business will suffer the most from universal credits as they will have to declare the minimum income floor (MIF), £6.31 an hour even if their business doesn't make enough to pay that and they will have to put their monthly business books in each month online . To get a better understanding of UC for yourself research it , but it will put small businesses out of work and on the dole which will cost the government more in benefits rather than tax credits to support their self employment . Many disabled people are self employed and UC will put them out of business too.
