San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said one man and one woman were killed when police chased the suspects' SUV and exchanged fire.

Law enforcement sources confirm to NPR's Dina Temple-Raston that one of the suspected gunmen is identified as Syed Farook. Farook was employed by the San Bernardino County health department as an environmental health specialist. His name has also been reported as Sayed Rizwan Farooq.

A source tells Dina that witnesses appeared to recognize his voice and build even though he was wearing a ski mask. His brother, a source told Dina, is also a subject of the investigation.

"We followed up on some tips that took us to a residence in the city of Redlands," Burguan said. "When officers were setting up on that residence to watch it, there was a vehicle that was seen leaving that was suspected of being involved. There ended up being a pursuit ... the suspects' vehicle stopped and there was an officer-involved shooting."

Burguan said the man and woman were dressed in "assault-style clothing" and carried "assault-style rifles" and handguns. He did not know their ages or their relationship. Burguan also said police detained a third suspect who was seen running away, but they do not yet know if he was involved. He said one police officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Burguan said police were taking extra care in approaching the suspects' vehicle in case there were explosives.

At least 14 people were killed and 17 others wounded when up to three suspects armed with long guns entered the Inland Regional Center — which is part of the California Department of Developmental Services and serves people with developmental disabilities — and began shooting, authorities said Wednesday.

Burguan did not discuss a possible motive, although he did say that there had been some sort of dispute at a holiday party at the center and one person had left the gathering. He cautioned that police did not know that if the person who left the party was one of the people who returned and opened fire.

Hours after the shooting, which began at 11:00 a.m. local time, TV images showed a bullet-riddled, dark-colored SUV hemmed in by police tactical vehicles and surrounded by officers in what appeared to be a residential neighborhood. Police told residents to shelter in place but lifted the warning after the two suspects were killed, saying the search had been wrapped up.

"We feel confident about the neighborhood ... that we have secured that and there is nobody outstanding there," he said. "On the broader scale, we are tracking down that information ... to identify if there was a third person involved [in the shooting]."

At an earlier press conference, Burguan said of the suspects: "These are people that came prepared. They were dressed and equipped in a way to indicate that they were prepared and they were armed with long guns not handguns."

Redlands Police were assisting San Bernardino Police at the scene, Baker said. Various agencies are involved. There were no further details available.

It was a Redlands cop who initially tried to pull over the suspect vehicle earlier in the day as well. The vehicle failed to stop, which led to the chase that eventually ended in San Bernardino and resulted in officers shooting and killing a male and female suspect.

6:01 p.m. 2 suspects dead; 1 in custody as officers work to clear home in Redlands

Officers shot and killed two suspects during a shoot-out in San Bernardino on Wednesday afternoon, according to police. The suspects were identified as a man and a woman. Their ages and relationship remains unknown. Their motive was also unknown, San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said at a press conference Wednesday night.

The two suspects who were killed were carrying assault rifles and handguns and were dressed in what Burguan described as "assault-style" clothing. Authorities were taking a cautious approach to their vehicle in case there were explosives there, he added.

Authorities are still investigating whether a third suspect now in custody was involved with the shooting, or whether more people had been involved the planning of the attack, Burguan said.

People in the area had reported hearing someone jumping fences, but it was unknown if that was the movement of officers or a suspect in the area. The area was eventually cleared and deemed safe, Burguan said.

One officer was also wounded in the shoot-out, Burguan said; the officer received non-life-threatening injuries and was at a local hospital. The officer was expected to be recover.

Tips led officers to a residence in Redlands, Burguan said. Officers were setting up when a vehicle suspected of being involved left, which led to a pursuit that ended in San Bernardino on San Bernardino Avenue between Mountain View and Richardson.

The FBI's David Bowdich said that the agency is investigating whether terrorism was the motive, but that he's "still not willing to say that we know that for sure."

FBI officers were investigating a house in Redlands, Bowdich said, but they were being cautious in case there were explosives at the house. He said there was no indication at the time that there were explosive devices there, but that they were being cautious in order to preserve agents' safety.

The shooting took place at a holiday party at the Inland Regional Center, Burguan said. At least one person left the party after a dispute. It's not yet clear if the shooting was related to the that incident, Burguan said.

Authorities were still working on clearing the Inland Regional Center and were expected to be there into the evening, Burguan said. The building was being searched by the bomb squad for suspicious devices. Authorities were taking a slow, cautious approach, Burguan said.

"We want to extend our true sadness to the families of the victims," Bowdich said. "This is truly a tragedy in our country."

That's not what I've read. I've read that there were two of them - Syed Rizwan Farook and his partner/wife, Tashfeen Malik, and there's nothing about them being "white supremacists".

The two had quite an arsenal in their home.  Even bombs.  The AR-15's are illegal in California--California is one state that gets highest marks for gun control, but it is surrounded by states that get lowest marks.

There is absolutely no evidence at this point of Islamic sympathies, and no connection to overseas terrorist groups.  Perplexing.

Good question. It might have been a form of Islamic terrorism, and he just chose to shoot his colleagues rather than shoot people in a shopping mall or wherever. Maybe something will turn up to explain why they did it.

it strikes me that conspiracy theorists are very "picky" about the theories they beleive in.

why beleive in te 9/11 conspiracy theories...and not this one??

after all...if "they" are out to get you then all the theories MUST be true....

I didn't say there was evidence of that nature, I said it might have been a form of Islamic terrorism. So far, no motive has been established, and as others have said, revenge for some alleged problem in the chap's employment seems a bit extreme, particularly as his wife got involved and they planned it beforehand.
