Maryland police find woman pushing her dead 3-year-old son on a park swing

A Maryland mother was found early on Friday pushing her dead 3-year-old boy on a park swing, authorities said. Deputies responded to a call around 7 a.m. to check on a woman who witnesses said had been pushing a child for hours on a swing at Wills Memorial Park in La Plata, about 35 miles (55 km) south of Washington, D.C., said Charles County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Diane Richardson. One witness told deputies she found it strange that the woman had been pushing the child for an unusually long period of time, possibly since the day before, Richardson said.

When the officers arrived they found the 24-year-old woman still pushing the child in the swing, and they realized immediately that the boy was dead, Richardson said. The child had no signs of obvious trauma, she said, and had been dead for at least several hours. The office of the chief medical examiner in Baltimore will perform an autopsy on the boy. The mother, who was not identified, was transported to a nearby hospital for medical tests, police said.

And she was doing it for hours. I really hope she recovers. Sounds like she had a complete break.

The death of a little boy whose body was found in a playground swing being pushed by his mother has been ruled a homicide.

Police were called after the child’s mother was observed pushing the three-year-old in the swing for two entire days in a Maryland Park last month.

The office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore ruled Ji’Aire Lee’s death was the result of dehydration and hypothermia. There were no obvious signs of trauma.

His mother Romechia Simms has not been arrested but the case will be presented to a grand jury next week.

Simms was taken for a medical evaluation because "it didn't appear that she was fully aware of what was going on," a sheriff's spokeswoman told HuffPost in May.

Concerns about Simms' allegedly erratic behavior arose earlier this year when the boy's father, James "Donnell" Lee, sought custody of their son.

Simms was hospitalised for four days after Ji'Aire's death. She and Lee sat beside each other at their child's funeral, The Washington Post reported.
