Teen still alive three months after judge rules doctors can withhold chemotherapy 'as he had fortnight to live'
A young man whom a judge ruled should be allowed to die against his parents’ wishes, after doctors said further treatment was “futile” and predicted he had just days to live, has survived for three months.
The case of the 18-year-old, who cannot be identified, is now to be revisited by the Court of Protection in London after it heard he had “surpassed all expectations”.
Mrs Justice Hogg ruled in February that although the teenager had shown “particular resilience and courage” over the years it would not now be in his interest to subject him to further chemotherapy or neurosurgery.
His parents pleaded with the court to continue any possible treatment for their son, who has lived with a brain tumour since he was a baby, insisting he was not dying.
During an eight-hour hearing, which lasted until after midnight, his mother described him as a “miracle child” who had repeatedly shown he could survive against the odds.
