UK unemployment benefit less generous than Romania, Albania and the US
Well now. Here’s an interesting ranking of countries according to how generous their unemployment benefit is for the first year after workers have lost their jobs.
Quite contrary to the spin we constantly receive from the mainstream press et al about how generous the UK is with unemployment benefits, the fact is we actually rank lower in generosity than countries like Romania, Albania and even the US.
Here’s the ranking – with the most generous countries at the top (you have to go right to the bottom to find the UK):
Country Gross Replacement Rate, year 1 Ranking
Netherlands 0.7 1

For more details of how the list was compiled – have a look at this excellent website:
World ranking in Unemployment Benefit replacement rates
The data by the way, is taken from a study compiled for the IMF - before anyone starts accusing me of peddling left-wing propaganda.
I don’t know about you, but I think it would be nice to see a few real facts being allowed to surface in the debate about welfare reform – instead of the ill-informed spin and propaganda that passes for debate on benefits we’re getting at the moment in the UK.

Funny how none of these figures ever hit our new channels.
We can add several other seriously important stories that have been serious crimes committed, with witnesses as well as forensic evidence. Yet, ALL of these important facts that the public should be made aware of are never mentioned on the bbc, sky or itv.

Well for one they are 4 years out of date.
Second, they are based on a questionable method of mesaurement, hence why they are not used by any party.

Thanks for the post!
It would be interesting to have an update. I will bet UK has not improved at all.
Maybe all party's should be approached to be made aware that they failing to monitor. This is something the people have a right to know so should be made part and parcel of all future and wannabe leaders.

Again its done on a very odd measure, which I am sure does not take into account cost of living, wages etc.
Hence why I take such claims with a pinch of salt

As it says on the bottom, by the IMF, you can't get better statistics.
The BBC etc really don't want you knowing it.

The BBC?
OMG that has made my day I laughed out loud at work and have had the most bemused stairs untill I told them why and they also burst out laughing.
Thanks Sassy, you are great enetertainment value based on sheer stupidity alone.
So now even the Guardian and the labour party must be complicit in this so called cover up?
So something that is common knowledge and easily found by forum posters, is soemthing being covered up?
Oh priceless entertainment.

IMF is Euro Propaganda , It literally means nothing outside of Europe. it is the worst compiler of numbers in the world today Both World bank and PPP are better.
And that is a rubbish measure of benefits,
It has more to do with the higher average wages and higher cost of living.
By that formula you are better off with 1 US dollar in Bangladesh than $US200 in Australia... which quite frankly is ridiculous.
what that Does show is the potential gap between rich and poor, depending on the availability of employment.
@Bra actually, that is entirely what it is doing saying Rather than a general value of the money it is based off a purchasing power matrix which it does not provide, if it was to include housing in either Sydney or London it is going to Skew the results heavily due to the ridiculous house prices.
