They Gave Their Lives
First topic message reminder :
80,000 Sikhs fought and died for Britain in the two world wars. Over 400,000 Muslims fought for King and Empire in The Great War alone. They came from present-day Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan. Sikhs and Muslims, they laid down their lives fighting side by side against a common foe.
A Remembrance and Celebration event will be held on Sunday 22 Oct to commemorate soldiers from Africa, the Caribbean, and the Indian Subcontinent who fought in the First World War. The event will be hosted by the Oxford Inventory of the African Mind at the New Testament Church of God, in Between Towns Road, starting at 6 pm.
People of these backgrounds who have stories from their family helping in past conflicts are still needed.
“It’s a good idea. It will be good to remember what people have done in the past. There’s a lot of people that come here and want to know about the Sikhs and who we are and what we did”, said Amrik Shergill, the chairman of London Road’s Sikh gurdwara. “It’s nice to get all the community together. We should all work together like what happened in the past.”

Pip pip old bean, I'll be happy to oblige. It seems we Colonials once had a president by the name of Lincoln who, poor chap, was assassinated at Ford's Theatre. Being that he had a wife, one Mary Todd Lincoln, we Yanks find this hypothetical question to the dear widow to be a rather droll display of gallows humor, as it were ...
Not always gallows humour. Sometimes meant to say missing the point...out of the conversation, as it were...

Not to be critical, but you offer the opportunity in your two posts: Look at how quick and pithy Churchill's quips are. Contrast them with the laborious and lumbering (attempted) logic of Lady Maggie.
.Churchill wrote:...drunk/ugly; brilliant/marry me; important point/whack
Maggie wrote:...liked/compromise/achieve nothing—still no point; Democratic nations/terrorists/oxygen…publicity/depends—elusive point.
But I like that last one.
Still, Churchill's mind was his greatest asset.

Hence you failed to see the subtlety, like I said.

Okay here is why you cannot see, as what do you see in this sentence?

That I agree with, as I said in no uncertain terms on that thread about whatever...but we were discussing how good women are at making quick life and death decisions.
Here, in the comparison between Churchill and Lady Maggie, I'm admiring Churchill's communication skills. And...it may have something to do with his drinking. That's perhaps why FDR loved him and Elanor hated him. Kearns Goodwin, No Ordinary Times.
Maybe his love of drunks is why Franklin and Elanor lived different lives.

lol that did make me laugh your last point and agree Churchill has great communication skills, though I think hers are far more subtle.
I actually see two subtle points here.
Reliability and trust.
Can you see why?

Too abstruse...elaborate pls.
Drunks are winners? I mean, Churchill did, in the end, prevail.

She is making the point on reliability and who we can trust, where the point is that generally you can rely and trust a woman to get things done. You cannot say the same for men, as they are easily distracted.
Subtle.

Oh, you mean the analogy on homemaking.
I like the one about walking across the Themes.
I don' know...to me, Churchill was sharp as a whip crack. Guess it's the timing that it evokes in the listener...in other words, it doesn't just settle upon you, it 'snaps' over you.

Re: They Gave Their Lives
I know Churchill was as sharp as a whip, my point is where Magge is different is she is so much better at being subtle, thus each have their own strengths in how they speak.
I agree though, you like me by far prefer the upfront, no holds bar approach when speaking, say it how it is.

Didge old bean. So now that the commemorations for those who fell in WWI are over and you have seen how many brave men fell from all the nations would you like to answer the question I posed to you to come up with the evidence that....
Traitors normally tend to be Scots.
You failed to answer that question in your last reply disguising and avoiding giving one under a smokescreen of nonsense to avoid doing so.
You have had plenty of time to try and find it so, have you got it?

When it comes to making claims that Traitors normally tend to be Scots that has to be challenged. Unlike you I've been busy but I hadn't forgot what you said.
So, you don't have it then - the evidence that is?

I will give you some help to understand my views Irn. I do not believe in boundaries on this planet that are imaginary walls and there are no different races, we are all one. That is all you need to know.

So you don't have any evidence that Traitors normally tend to be Scots after all.
Thought as much Didge and it was nothing more than an angry rant.
I'm happy with that so on that score I'll bid you a very goodnight as I have a busy day tomorrow and I trust you do as well.
