When funny beats nasty
When things are grim and you’re trying to work out how to stay positive and still fight the good fight with humour and verve, it’s helpful to be told of others who have done so. And it is in this spirit that 10 Things likes to point out some happy things in among the endless slog of The Abbott Nightmare Years.
For example: in the US there’s an action group called Come And Take It Texas, a pro-gun group who feel that their special precious rights are being infringed by laws seeking to prevent them from openly carrying guns around in shops and parks and other public places where people might justifiably be terrified by guns being brandished.
So a group of women have taken to following them around on their frequent mass displays of gun-toting. With signs. And they're also topless.
This has so infuriated the open carry group that they’re claiming that this group of “skanky topless libtards” (as they so charmingly put it) are infringing on their right to free speech - a right to which topless women are clearly not entitled, at least not when they’re holding signs saying "You realize that everyone thinks you're overcompensating for your teeny tiny 'gun' right?" and "Boobs for peace."
The thing that’s awesome about this is twofold: one, that it’s preventing Come And Get It Texas from getting mainstream media coverage because television crews know what sort of outrage and FCC fine-levying happens when errant nipples are shown on television - oh, Janet Jackson, your Superbowl legacy lives on - and it also means that whenever they get mentioned in the media it’s as a side note to the more interesting story, “awesome ladies make fun of whining gun nuts”.
Humour, friends. That’s our greatest weapon. Don’t ever be afraid to use it.

I use a .45 revolver because, frankly, I have it. The important thing about a hand weapon is stopping power. Assuming the worst, say you have to stop a charging bear: Nothing less than a .38 mag will stop it, and more likely a .45 to be safe. Javelinas might also take a larger caliber handgun.
They pack up in herds of 4-5 in Arizona. In fact, often you'll find a herd pulling down your garbage cans.
Large cats might take only a .22 or a .30-30, perhaps a jaguar a bit more. Coyotes are rarely a problem unless one is rabid. The rest, a smaller bore will do.
Another thing that helps is a pack of domestic dogs. At Gates Pass, just west of Tucson, we had three black labs (momma, dad and puppy). Henry, Elsie and Puppy policed the neighborhood and nothing ever got in...even bears and big cats got their hat when the dogs were around.
The neighbors loved the dogs, fortunately, but on the trail they might be resented.

Yes, very funny Bee. And veya... But when you get felled by one of them you won't be laughing. Steve Irwin is dead because he didn't take the proper precautions down under, there.
Snakes--particularly sidewinders--come out by the dozens and sun themselves in the morning. But you can usually brush them away with a broom.
But, bears, mountain lions and jaguars are becoming acclimated to people and they pose a bigger threat. However, they run like hell if you shoot off a gun. You don't have to shoot them Just the noise is effective.
So if I blow up a paper bag and burst it with a loud bang will the bears etc. do a runner?
Yes...I'm not an expert in wildlife biology psychology, but a loud noise works really well. (Bee probably knows more about the animal psychology than you or I, and could elaborate.) What it is about noise is a mystery to me. Maybe the animal senses more malice with a handgun report, but without more to tell me otherwise, I believe it is simply the noise. But it works.
Anyway, I would also feel more secure having the handgun itself as a Plan B.
Plan B is a good idea Quill. You just never know what may turn up.

Roflmao. Yes, that's one possibility. Me little friend got an even greater kick out of it...
It certainly underscores the importance of Plan B.

THE most useful short-to-mid range hunting weapons for backpacking and "survival" purposes would have to be either a take-down recurve bow, or for those who don't want to bother with the necessary practice, a packable small-calibre rifle such as .22, .222 (or even a .223) bolt-action that packs up into the stock...
BOTH weapons would each only add about 4-5 and 6-7 lbs respectively, with their full kit and sufficient ammo' (where the .22 has the advantage in the amount of bullets, due to low weight and cost..), to a pack' load, weightwise.
90 -> 95% of the time, though, either would prove to be somewhat superfluous for the average backpackers and even more serious wilderness travelers these days..

Yeah but that is the point MOST animals run away from man with spear
I don;t want to kill the animal just want to NOT get attacked
