Manners 'as important as grades' for teenagers
THE RULES JOB HUNTERS SHOULD FOLLOW
1) "Ensure you use confident verbal self-expression. The way you personally communicate is 90 per cent of how you will be evaluated by any future employer."
2) "Never underestimate the value of good manners. I can count on one hand the number of people who wrote me a thank you letter after having an interview and I gave almost all of them a job."
3) "Really research the company you are applying for and – specifically – the person you are being interviewed by. Don’t be a creep but never underestimate the power of flattery. If you walk in, shake someone by the hand and say, ‘it’s such a pleasure to meet you, I particularly loved that piece you wrote a year ago’, it will go a long way."
4) "Work experience is exceptionally valuable. It puts you in people’s minds. If you are already known to the employer because you did two weeks over the summer – and you were always the first person in and the last person out, you made really good tea and were super helpful and enthusiastic – you are leagues ahead in the fight for that job no matter what’s on your CV."

Common sense, unfortunately not regarded as necessary by most these days.
Had this been printed in the Mirror it might reach the audience who would gain the most.
This is not snobbery well done her.

Re: Manners 'as important as grades' for teenagers
It is true, you have to at least be able to 'interview' and have good manners during the interview is important. regardless of the 'attitude' of the office, I work in a quite informal office environment in many ways, but they still wouldn't employ someone who is rude in the interview.
Once in here Humor and being able to 'roll with the punches' will keep you here BUT that varies from every employer. And you have to show you can be serious when required

Ah, interview advice. I remember a column that pointed out how many young people are misinterpreting the advice to dress up for an interview -- they think of "dressing up" as getting ready to go to a club and end up looking wildly inappropriate ...

I always think it's just best to be natural too.
Everyone is human and showing that you're human....well, you can't go wrong.
Having said that I don't think people should fart and burp at interviews and then say gleefully "Well! I'm only human!"

well to even get to the interview it helps if your resume and cover letter both have correct spelling and grammar.
