Chip shop owner forced to remove a 'racist' sign boasting that his business now had 'English owners' after threats to burn it down

A chip shop owner has removed a ‘racist’ banner boasting that the business now had ‘English owners’, after his predecessor received threats to burn it down.

Previous owner Paul Bradbury - who put the sign up at The Chippy on the Green in Padiham, Lancashire, after taking it over last August - has gone back to Liverpool with his wife Rachel after shutting up shop.

The couple had put a banner outside which said ‘Under new management with English owners’ - but Mr Bradbury said that he received two threatening phone calls from people calling him racist. They left the shop and moved away from the area earlier this year - and new owner Sotos Orfanides has now adapted the sign to read ‘Under new management with English meals’. He said: ‘I don’t think the original sign was racist, but there was a big thing about it being racist. No one is racist in this shop. They were English and they were serving some English food. ‘I changed the sign because people were calling and threatening to burn the shop down.

He said racism was ‘alive and well in Padiham’.

He said: 'We’ve used that chip shop when it was run by other people, who were well liked and respected in the community. I wouldn’t go in there now and neither would many of the people I know.

'Half a dozen local people I’ve spoken to since yesterday have said they are disgusted by what it says.

'It’s not a positive message to put out to children which go to local schools that you should prefer to go into a shop run by one sort of people. It’s not good for them or for the community.

'Burnley is supposed to be an enterprising, multi-cultural place. Asian people run the shop just down the road. This gives a very bad impression of the area and could well upset people.'

Local councillor Joanne Greenwood said: 'It’s not helpful at all and it could well upset people and I can see why. I certainly don’t think it’s necessary to say that.'

Lancashire Police say they have not yet received any complaints about the banner."

Looking at the information provided it seems that this is a multicultural community that works, and naturally this is what the RWhinge fear the most.

I do not think he was really threatened, more like abuse hurled at him, because lets face it like you say and agree if your life is threatened, you would really fear it was and seek protection.

The place seemed to being doing well under the previous owners, if you read the original article and this has much to do with him holding racial vies and a lack of business, no doubt has poor people skills as seen by his comments. If he thinks that way of people, how is he like thus with customers.

Fair point me Lady, again his views were very stupid to be honest, if you want to attract customers in a multicultural area, the last thing you do is draw the wrong attention to yourself, which as seen can have the affect where they end up selling the business. None of this would have occurred with a sign saying under new Management. In fact doing even that can be bad if the previous owners were popular, what you do is draw on their popularity to gain these customers yourself.

Chinese Nationality, with English ethnicity.

Not difficult is it, hence why I am of English nationality of Irish and Sicilian ethnicity.

Though if you delve further you will no doubt find even more ethnic groups within yourself, so really an ethnic groups is defined by a nation itself and in this country the English ethnicity is made up up multiple ethnic groups.

The Mail loves stories like that, but again people do not read between the lines, they see the headline, skim the story and come to a conclusion he has been somehow denied being English, it happens all the time.
Just suprised Muslim was not thrown into boot to use something to target the blame on, that is the normal scenario, you know man paints his door with English colours, Muslims blamed even though no complaints from them, Muslims agree he should paint his door as he sees fit, Muslims blamed for Halal in Pizza Express, they though want meat to be labelled.

Also Fish and Chips originated from a Jewish refugee couples from Spain and Portugal, so even that is not really English by design English but adapted to become an English tradition, you see multiculturalism at work for you
