Iraq ready to legalise childhood marriage
Children in Iraq could be legally married before the age of nine under sweeping legislation tabled on Tuesday that introduces new religious restrictions on women's rights. As almost its last act before elections at the end of the month, the Iraqi parliament looks likely to pass new marital rules for its majority Shia community with a draft law criticised by human rights activists as "legalised inquality". The legislation has been approved by the governing coalition in an effort to attract support from Shia Muslims in the April 30 vote.
Ayad Allawi, a former Iraqi prime minister, warned on Tuesday that approval of the law would lead to the abuse of women. "It allows for girls to be married from nine years of age and even younger," he said. "There are other injustices [contained in it] too."
While there is no set minimum age for marriage, the section on divorce includes rules for divorces of girls who have reached the age of 9 years. Marital rape is condoned by a clause that states women must comply with their husband's sexual demands. Men are given guardianship rights over women and the law also establishes rules governing polygamous relationships.

Something else to add to the crimes of Bush and Blair. Before the war with Iran, Iraq was the most advanced Middle Eastern country for women's rights, with women working and equality of education. The educational standards declined slightly after the Gulf War, but were finished off completely by the sanctions against it and the invasion.

So the men who are making this law aren't to blame - and the men raping and molesting children aren't to blame either....Sassy wrote:Something else to add to the crimes of Bush and Blair. Of course they are to blame for what they do, but they wouldn't have been in the position of being able to do it if Iraq had not been invaded.

so what you are saying is that the war with Iran change it all, but lets just blame the west as usual

In context, this move is akin to what Republicans do in the U.S. when they try to win the support of the far-right regressives by creating popular votes on questions like abortion and gay marriage:

Re: Iraq ready to legalise childhood marriage
This thread has personified exactly what this forum's all about (at least as far as the LWers are concerned.) Threads saying how wonderful each other are get loads of replies.. threads about the evil Tories get loads of replies... threads about anything that can be perceived as a slight against gay people get loads of replies....
But threads about little girls being systematically raped for most of their short unhappy little lives get a handful of replies, all blaming western politicians - none showing the absolute disgust that should be any decent person's response to this, disgust at the actual perpetrators of this sick practice. Why? take a guess.
Shameful.

Re: Iraq ready to legalise childhood marriage
It is disgusting, just trying to lend the topic a little more nuance than it will ever get from our right-wingers and show that that Iraq is not unified in wanting to bring back child marriage.

Indeed. No doubt many, many people of Iraqi origin are also revolted by the proposal.

Before the invasion, although their financial situation meant they had to cut back on the spending for education, what was there was there for both girls and boys, and the reason women weren't working so much is because we (ie America and Britain) had completely devastated the infra-structure and businesses could not function. None of this would have been happening without the invasion, Saddam was no saint by a long chalk, and did some terrible things. But we did just as many, and the end result is women have gone backward by a long way since the sanctions and invasion.
