Lord Dear introduces ‘belief in traditional marriage’ amendment to same-sex marriage bill
Lord Dear has introduced a new amendment to the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill which could prove fatal to the equal marriage bill for England and Wales by creating a separation between straight and gay marriages.
The amendment, almost the same as one put forward by Lord Dear at Committee stage, will be considered during the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill, as it goes into its Report stage in the House of Lords on 8 July.
The first of two amendments tabled by Lord Dear, aims to protect the “belief in traditional marriage”, and separates straight couples’ marriages from those of gay couples.
“For the avoidance of doubt, nothing in this Act shall contradict the principle that the belief that marriage is the voluntary union of one man and one woman for life to the exclusion of all others is a belief worthy of respect in a democratic society,” reads the amendment.
The second amendment would meant the bill would: ”Affect the right of teachers to express their personal views about marriage in an appropriate way, or mean that any teacher will be under any obligation to endorse a particular view of marriage.”
Lord Dear tabled amendments during Committee stage, in an attempt to wreck the bill last month.
During Committee stage, Lord Alli said “Teachers in all contexts need to teach the legal position”, rather than personal opinion.
The previous ‘fatal’ amendment to deny the bill its second reading was tabled last month, but was defeated, with the Lords voting 390 votes to 148 in favour of the bill.

"Lord Dear". That speaks volumes in itself. This old fossil sounds and looks like the old Republican fossils we have in Congress. I'm hopeful that in the not so distant future that these ignorant farts will die out and their beliefs and ideas will die with them; I can dream.

They will eventually but are the Republican members of congress elected?
In our second chamber which is the Lords they are unelected so it grates all the more!

Yeah, I'm afraid they are elected - by moron voters.
Elections wouldn't guarantee that you wouldn't get another "Lord Dear."
People can waste their votes on ignorance and stupidity, I'm afraid.

Lord Deers amendment was overwhelmingly defeated!
Thirteen minutes ago....
The equal marriage bill for England and Wales has passed through its Report stage in the House of Lords, and is now set for its Third Reading next Monday.
After a long day of debate on a number of amendments and issues, the House of Lords was adjourned, as the bill remained intact, despite several attempts to wreck it.
The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill was subject to scrutiny, and many Government amendments were added, in order to tidy it up.
It avoided amendments such as one from Lord Singh, which called for a referendum on equal marriage in October, and another which had been accused of attempting to allow faith schools to opt-out of teaching about same-sex marriage.
As it is now in its final form, it will return to the House of Lords on Monday for a vote.
If passed in its Third Reading, the bill will be different to that which passed in the House of Commons, so will return there to for approval.
If the House of Commons makes changes, the bill returns to the House of Lords, and can go back and forth until both are agreed. This process is known as parliamentary ping pong, and is scheduled for 16 and 17 July, when Parliament goes into recess. If the process is not agreed by then, the bill cannot be debated again until late into 2013.
Once eventually passed in both Houses, the bill will be given Royal Assent, before coming law, however it is unlikely that Royal Assent will be given until after summer recess.
