BBC removes website touting 'benefits' of global warming after backlash
The BBC has removed an educational page laying out the “benefits” of climate change after a furious online reaction.
BBC Bitesize, its website for schoolchildren, claimed warmer temperatures “could lead to healthier outdoor lifestyles” and that a benefit of climate change could mean easier access to oil in Alaska and Siberia.
Other apparent benefits highlighted by the BBC included the ability to one day grow more crops in Siberia, new shipping routes created by melting ice, and more tourist destinations.
- The Guardian
How pathetic, to teach kids that climate change might be a good thing!

Let's face it, the real political axis in the climate change debate is over petroleum and it's 'man-made' contribution. Big oil is the bad guy, and that's what makes it a political issue.
Humankind will have to live with the result regardless. So, a futurist discussion about the consequences is not that horrible.

Got one of those linky things.
Obviously climate change will make things worse for some people, but that doesn't mean there can't be benefits for some people.
The "news" shouldn't change their story because the public didn't like hearing it.

It's not going to help anyone, if you take everything into consideration. Such as:
* all warm regions becoming uninhabitable
* millions of climate refugees crowding the places that remain habitable
* the extinction of the oceans
* the collapse of the global food chain
* the spread of tropical diseases throughout the world
All of that is going to make the odd warm day feel like someone complimenting your looks, then shooting you in the stomach.

Don't bet on the stupidity of people. Having an open discussion is a good thing.
Find answers...not hopelessness.

Those items should be reported too.
Everything should, and as a former journalist you should have issues with popular opinion causes a report to be changed.

Yeah, so let's have a story about how hypothermia makes you feel warm for a while, without also saying in the same story that it'll kill you.
Re: BBC removes website touting 'benefits' of global warming after backlash
What you are saying, Ben, is that the BBC site is normative, rather than factual. I haven't seen it, and now it's off the air. What sorts of things were being promoted, and why do you feel they were supportive rather than just expository?

If you leave the second part off, that's also bias. How about simply leaving out the bias?

Ideally, any website aimed at teaching a topic to children would be well-rounded. To just have a page talking up the supposed benefits of global warming is ridiculous and frankly reeks of propaganda.
Re: BBC removes website touting 'benefits' of global warming after backlash
I don’t care what the topic is, if it’s a website aimed at children it should be unbiased and also give both sides of an opinion otherwise it is a useless teaching aid.

I didn't see the site. You say it was "talking up" global warming. Can you describe what they were doing constituting "talking up" the benefits, as opposed to merely describing benefits?

Well, if it’s a site or piece that proports to report and focus only on benefits, then it is doing what it says it is doing. That's fine.
However, if it is advocating benefits and minimizing disadvantages, then it's got a polemical slant...like Faux News.
