Do you argue more on forums than in real life?
First topic message reminder :
It's probable more subjects are up for discussion on a forum, and obviously we are communicating with people from different backgrounds and different cultures.
So, it wouldn't be surprising if you crossed swords more with people online than you would when discussing topics with family and friends in your local area.
But are you more patient and restrained with people when you discuss, argue, or debate a topic if someone is in the same room?
For instance....when (in the real world) did a difference of opinion end in name calling?

I am too straight forward to play silly forum games.
You've made snidy accusing remarks about me several times in the last few days. You cannot help yourself.
Btw it wasn't me who gave you the red, I don't give reds, you can easily check that from my profile.

Andy was a member here long before you or I, he can handle himself, without ''orders' from any boss, don't be stupid.
Threads like this never end well, however (allegedly) well intentioned they are meant to be.
They always end up in a free for all bustup and you should surely have enough wisdom to realise this.
Anyway you got the bloody row you wanted. Happy now?
I have made no remarks directed at you, You came into this thread for one reason only, to cause trouble.
I was willing to address the accusations you were flinging around, but as usual, you hit and ran.... even posted to Ben directly afterwards saying you wouldn't be around for a while because there was something 'off' about this forum.....which to be fair, after you had finished shit stirring...there was.
Take a tip, move on. All this grudge holding must be playing havoc with your digestive system.

Typical lefties... 'Keep repeating the lie'... Eh...!?
Lies and spin is all you've got!!!
You need to start stocking up with your tissues, to dry your eyes, in an even bigger drubbing that's coming to you in the next general elections!!!
With Kweer Stammer in charge, and that he was in charge as the director of public prosecutions during some of labours most dismal years on being 'tough o crime and tough on the causes of crime'... Plus him doing absolutely fuck all about prosecuting any of the Pakistani Muslim child rape gangs during his time... You are truly fucked for a long long time to come!!!
The public have become wise to all the idiots you have as prominent labour MPs... And you lot now trying to shuffle them around to try to make a credible opposition front bench is akin to the deck chairs being shuffled around the deck of the Titanic!!!!

Perhaps you should think twice in future about starting threads that are likely to invite personal abuse and vitriolic attacks .
I wonder whether Ben will be concerned if both I and Jules refrain from posting , following Korben and the brilliant Wolfie
That will leave only right and far right wing British poster, with Quill holding the Fort for Democrats and the left of centre.
If it becomes soley right wing posters, it could go the same way as the failed, flopped place.

I post threads I find interesting, and judging by the response to many of them other people do too.
I have no idea what Ben would think ...ask him. Personally I don't think either of you add much to the forum, apart from whinging and trouble.
Korben was a nice poster who got involved with a couple of arguments, he gave as good as he got....obviously he thought better of spending time on the forum arguing, we all have free choice.
I am not right wing, I have never voted Cons in my life....

Andy, with respect, if people are feeling abusive and vitriolic then that's what they will give out regardless of the thread they're on.
Personally, I think this is the nicest forum that's ever been built and Ben runs a good ship
Try contributing to thread subjects rather than moaning about other posters and it will be even better

I couldn't agree more.
I also said (at the beginning) this forum is the less aggresive one I have ever been on, apart from Dallas Digest (now defunct) but that was made up from most posters who actually knew each other in real life, so there was none of the faceless name calling that other forums might indulge in.
There is a big difference between arguing on a forum and causing trouble on one.
Arguing is par for the course, especially when it's a forum like this where free speech isn't jumped on every 5 minutes....causing trouble is just an outlet for someone who has no intention of contributing to the subject...and it obviously ruins threads.

Re: Do you argue more on forums than in real life?
First of all, if you're going to accuse someone of liking a comment where someone was called a whore, you should find that thread and link to it. I don't like accusations that aren't backed up.
Secondly, I don't see how this thread was directed at anybody in particular -- it's an innocent question, and fairly interesting as well.
Syl isn't the type of poster to be sneaky and accuse people without coming right out and saying it. She's taken me up on a number of issues over the years and has never danced around the problem.
I think everyone should calm down a bit and stop reading more into what's been said than what's been said.
And yes, I do think Quill and Maddog fight too much, but I just ignore them for the most part.

When people see a negative in a question, it is never the questioners fault for asking the question.

Re: Do you argue more on forums than in real life?
This is simple common sense. Let me explain, if you will.
You ask a question and someone immediately feels suspicious about why you’re asking.
That’s their hang up.
A simple question asked, should never be questioned.

The only question you may need to ask when asked a question is:
“What exactly do you mean, so that I understand the question properly?”

If someone asks you a question, you should be able to answer it
Why answer a question, with a question?
Sure, ask your own question but answer the question first.

"The method of answering questions with questions, in order to let the questioner realize that he can find the answer by reasoning (Socrates would say that the answer was in him all along), is called maieutics"

The same could easily apply if you wish to understand how I think on the issue, I could use searching questions for you to come to the same understanding I have
See nothing suspicious about that and it engages a more thinking discussion formed from this

Unless you’re a therapist, who’s job it is NOT to answer questions, there really are no excuses for not answering a question.
It’s called avoidance and politicians, for example, do it all the time.

I prefer people that can answer a question directly. They immediately show they have confidence and I know that I can have a really interesting conversation with them, trusting that we are starting from a place of honesty and trust.
Otherwise it’s pointless.
And really, that’s the only way to communicate, for me.

I think sometimes questions make people uncomfortable and they engage in a lot of defense mechanisms to avoid having to look into themselves for the honest answer. It would be more constructive to not be defensive or false, and instead to just deal with the honest answer.

Get used to being disappointed then, if I answer a question you have with a question

Asking someone a question shows interest in that person, and surely that's a good thing.
I have no problem answering a straight question with a straight answer.

If you view someone thinking a method is best to help someone learn and think that is arrogant. The n you are coming at this from a position of defence and not open to thinking through ideas
there you go again
why do you assume a person needs your help
what if they are just interested in your opinion on something for no other reason than because they respect your opinion? they don't actually need any help, they are only asking out of curiosity
what then?

First off you are wrongly assuming I believe they need help
What if I would rather engage in asking questions to see if the person can come to the same views and opinions I have on the question they have asked gelico
Again this is you and Eddie as seen seeing an ulterior motive when none is given
Its simple a different way to come to finding answers
There is nothing sinister in that

I’ve never known you to avoid a question or ask a question in reply to a question on here or on other social media.
I’d have remembered that, for sure.

asking someone a question doesn't automatically mean you are looking for any kind of solution to a problem

No, you answer the question then you ask your own question. Which is perfectly fine.
I’ve never known you to avoid a question or ask a question in reply to a question on here or on other social media.
Its not for you to decide Eddie how people respond
You are also under the wrong assumption the question is being avoided when its not
Again if the view is to question back to come to the same understanding then nothing is being avoided is it?

I’d leave it if I were you. I’ve never seen Maddog do that. He always answers a question.
