Icebox Texas
Things are getting rough over here. Snow and ice has covered the state. Temps were 3° F this morning. My pipes in my building are frozen, but my power is still on. Pretty sure pipes are busting in the parking garage. About to move the truck I think. 20 percent of our energy is made by windmills. They are frozen. We take some systems off the grid for maintenance every winter because that's our "slow" time for power usage.
Now the grid is being overworked and folks are losing power and its only about 8°F out.
Anther storm is on its way Wednesday and temps will be below freezing until Friday.
Tonight's low may be below 0°F.
Two out of 3 of my daughters are without electricity right now.

Wow...that is seriously cold.
In the UK we have just come out of a cold spell, but it's been nowhere near as cold as that.
Take care.

Yea looks bad Texas is known for its sprawling deserts and excruciating heatwaves - but right now, it's blanketed in a thick layer of ice.Maddog wrote:Things are getting rough over here. The state is seeing some of its coldest temperatures in more than 30 years, with some areas breaking records that are more than a century old.

I'm equipped because I hunt and camp. But this is going to kill people one way or another. Either freezing to death, carbon monoxide poisoning or fires trying to stay warm.
Just moved my truck to the ground floor. Elevators are out so I got some exercise in dark stairwells.
Uncle Joe has just declared us a state of emergency.

Thanks.
We're not getting above freezing until Friday. Pretty sure that's going to be a record.
Pipes are already bursting in the floors below me and their power is out.
On the plus side it's pretty.

I don't mind driving on snow. I really don't mind any driving conditions. I just don't like being around others who don't know what they are doing.

Re: Icebox Texas
I know what you mean,we had about 18in of snow this week and the amount of people i have seen stepping on the gas hoping that this will somehow help them get up slight hills is laughable, when all it does is polish the ice under the wheels making in less likely to give any traction,or digging out a couple of inches of snow in front of the wheels, then gunning the engine in a forlorn hope of moving more than a foot.
Not one thinks about letting some air out if the tires to give a bigger foot print.or carrying some equipment like a shovel,or traction pads ,or carrying rope to tie around the wheels to make temporary snow-chains most dont even have the right clothing for the conditions
its like the are auditioning for the Darwin awards

And just like that, it's 75 degrees and the AC came on in my truck.

Spring flowers often bloom at this time of year. The crocuses and snowdrops are all out in the gardens now, I have a huge Magnolia at the back that looks like it's ready to pop....nothing unusual in that.Ben Reilly wrote:And the flowers are blooming in England. You know the nicer weather is coming when there are loads of bunches of daffodils for sale in every supermarket.
