The apartment management welcomes them.
"With these guys being here, things have been getting a whole lot better at the complex,” said employee K. B. Kabbara.
Residents agree. They say they feel better about letting their kids come out and play.
"I think it's been really good they have been walking around,” said resident Chanta Baker.
The volunteers say they are also cleaning up the apartments with beautification days and helping families with school supplies.
They say police can't fight crime alone, so they are helping.
The Dallas Police Department is facing a shortage of officers, so community activists say they are looking for other ways to reduce crime.

Re: Southern Dallas group openly armed to patrol neighborhood
I often think a bit of community spirit in cleaning up areas is a good thing. On a small scale we did it here when the bungalows my mum and other OAP's were living in were being targeted by feral kids who were climbing on the roofs at night and terrorising some of the old people.
We sorted it when the local police were useless, and we did possibly break the law in a small way....but it worked.
Parading round with guns like Charlie Bronson on a mission is a different story. That may work if everyone was reasonable fair and unflappable......but if a vigilante group attracts people who are less so, I can see disaster waiting to happen.

Those people are already there. But it appears that they are there and smaller numbers now.

In the south it has a different flavor. Remember, Dallas policewoman Amber Guyger? She wrote the book on apartment house ethnic cleansing. On the private side, we have George Zimmerman in Florida.
