Brecon and Radnorshire by-election: Lib Dems' Jane Dodds triumphs as Boris Johnson's majority cut to one - latest news
The Liberal Democrats have won the Brecon and Radnorshire by-election, cutting the Government’s working majority to just one.
Jane Dodds, the party’s leader in Wales, secured a tight majority of 1,425 over the Conservative candidate Chris Davies, overturning his 2017 majority of 8,038. The by-election was triggered after Mr Davies was convicted of filing false expenses claims and a recall petition gained over 18,000 signatures.
The Lib Dems racked up 43.5 per cent of the vote, ahead of the Tories’ 39 per cent. Ms Dodds recalled the 1985 Brecon and Radnorshire by-election, which she said triggered a “Liberal revival” across the country and claimed: “We’ve done it again”.
The party’s success came at the expense of Labour, who had a woeful night, winning just 1,680 votes. It narrowly avoided losing its deposit by securing a little over 5 per cent. Lib Dem sources told The Telegraph that they did not believe this was the result of tactical voting but of genuine anti-Corbyn sentiment. “Voters were bringing up [Jeremy Corbyn’s] name unprompted on the doorstep”, one party figure said.

They only won because of sneaky tactics where they had an agreement with plaid cymru and the greens that they wouldn't stand candidates...
The torys were a bit daft to let the same candidate stand after he was done for expenses fraud...
Maybe we should add the tory and brexit party votes together and say it was a victory for leave...!?

Tory plus brexit party share of vote = vote for leave!!!
Oh... and remind us how many votes labour got...!?
Labour only got 1680 votes... 5.3% of the vote... nearly losing their deposit!!!
Labour finished just ahead of the monster raving loony party!!!

so conservatives, brexit and ukip (for what that's worth) got 15,974
lib dems got 13,826
if you lump in labour and loony party with the lib dems you still only get a total of 15,840
i reckon cons and brexit will hand victory to libdems because both egos are too big to do anything else

that's hardly sneaky, tommy
sensible politics, is that
if the leavers parties would do the same it would help but they're actually standing against each other
what good does that do?

Of course, Andy, but I think this by-election was probably unusual, if not unique, in that it was widely interpreted as a test of just how the nation stands in the great debate over our EU membership rather than a clash of the more traditional Left-Right-Centre tribal loyalties.
As you rightly say there was only one winner - the Lib Dems - but I think they are being somewhat foolhardy in trying to present it as a victory for their long and passionately held "leave" stance: It certainly isn't that; just the opposite in fact.
Quite what possessed the Tories in re-running a candidate who had been convicted of a parliamentary expenses fraud, albeit on a technicality, puzzles me. The stock of politicians of all parties is pretty low among the electorate and fielding Chris Davies again was almost tantamount to saying to constituents "it's not a problem; stop whingeing."
And why on earth the Brexit Party fielded a separate candidate when it appears that they are on the verge of achieving what they have been campaigning for puzzles me even more.
Any way, congratulations to the Lib Dems, for whom I have voted in previous elections. I don't agree with their stand on Europe but they seem to be becoming a powerful force in British politics, and I for one am not at all unhappy at the prospect of the old system of Labour and the Tories slugging it out in a quinquennial Left versus Right dog fight being replaced with something that gives a greater say to those of us who are not party political tribe members.

As long as Corbyn remains the Labour leader, there will be defections from Labour to the Lib Dems.
As with the Conservatives.
The Lib Dems are not without fault, but suddenly a sensible centre ground leader of a conciliatory party does have some appeal over a far left leader and a far right leader.
