How the old are discriminated against in the UK like no other group.
First topic message reminder :
The ridiculous pop star Jamelia gives an interview saying all older people should not be allowed to vote, but her views just emphasise the way the elderly are treated with such disdain and contempt in this country.
This article in todays Mirror highlights the discrimination older people face, when it simply would not be tolerated against any other group in our society.
"Imagine if a public figure said that gays should be banned from voting.
Or the disabled should be disenfranchised. Or Jews or Muslims.
There would be outrage.
Yet singer Jamelia happily says that old people should be denied the vote, as if it's the most reasonable thing in the world to suggest.
“I just don't think it's fair that you have a vote when you're not going to experience the consequences of that vote,” she told the Jeremy Vine show.
Why is it that, for some people, racism is abhorrent but age discrimination like this is fine?
You can see this attitude all the time in courts where crooks are on trial for preying on the elderly, as if somehow they don't count.
Take so-called carer Carly Douglas, who stole £18,000 from a 94-year-old resident in the Sunderland care home where she worked.
Last week she was jailed for 30 months.
At least they were locked up. Such is society's distain for the elderly that crooks like them all too often escape with a slap on the wrist.
Nurse Jane Palmer walked free from court despite befriending the elderly parents of her boyfriend, helping them set up an online bank account, and then siphoning £47,000 from it.
The “angel” from Seaton in Devon spent much of the money on cars and holidays, Exeter crown court was told.
Palmer, 51, admitted fraud charges but got off with 20 months suspended.
I'm not saying that Jamelia is on a par with these fraudsters, but she is part of the same culture of treating our elderly with contempt.
So are the idiots who have been vandalising World War Two memorials - after all, the few remaining veterans are now in the late evening of their lives.
And so is a jaw-dropping website called Deatherendum, which celebrated the deaths of old people on the supposed grounds they were likely to have voted Leave in the EU referendum.
One Remain journalist on the Guardian, Polly Toynbee, delighting in the passing of all these old folk, tweeted that the vote to leave was now “the will of dead people”.
When did it become acceptable to be this sick and this stupid?2

Thanks eddie.eddie wrote:Jules wrote:Syl, like some others I did not see the bit where you mentioned your MIL's passing.
So very sorry for your loss, S. - I know you were very fond of her from the way you frequently spoke about her. Treasure the fond memories. x

Thanks again.Jules wrote:Syl wrote:I dont think this social contempt for the older generation can be blamed on the left...or the right, there are selfish arrogant tossers everywhere.
And wasn't it Thatcher that encouraged people to put themselves first? Greed is good, I'm all right Jack so let the weak fight for themselves.
Well that has now filtered down to family, and sadly, many of the older generation are treated badly by their own families, as well as complete strangers.
If I could award you several greenies for this one post, /\ /\ I would, Syl.
It's the govt of the day - be it tory or labour - which makes the law, not gobby opinionated citizens.
The buck stops with the govt, it's that simple!
And yes, this greed-is-good thing started with the thatcher cabinet, I remember it well. You're spot on.
Michael Douglas brought out his iconic film with that meme at around that time too. Reinforcing the evil message.
Sow / Reap!
Nightnight luv, see you tomorrow. x
